It's innovation is considered as such because it focus on streamlining combat, with the "Golden Triangle of Halo" which is Weaponfire - Grenades - Melee.

I don´t care, someone else did the Necro, so i just roll with it.

Halo 1 was "innovative"?
If so, here are my impressions on why it could be called that:

Story: While some might think "heres Aliens, they are bad, go kill them mofos" is the main plot, that is wrong.
Halo 1 set of a completely artistic turn by starting in the middle of something, they find a giant ring in space you know nothing about, the main character YOU PLAY is UNDEFINED as a whole, all you know is that he has been on cryo for some time, you don´t even get to see his face, EVER.
At the start, you have no guns, nothing, still you partake as the ship gets run over by some alien race(s) you´ve never seen before and don´t know what the hell they want from you. That´s done in HL1 too, but not to the degree since YOU actually caused it.
Then you mow down the attackers, land on the Ring and are pretty much stranded.
Also, Halo 1 seemed to be introducing tactical combat, where YOU could see and sneak up to enemies without them knowing, and even take them out from long range without them noticing, thus, breaking their defences without a fight.
Then there was the vehicles...i was amazed how much fun it is to run over some perky critters in a military jeep until Forehammer brought me this nice piece of equipment.
You Unfold the History and meaning of the Ring (the latter in a nice plottwist) as you progress, still you have the feeling you want to leave this god forsaken ring, specially the moment the Flood zergrush you.

AI: while not the best in gaming history, taking out the elite and seeing the grunts run in fear screaming "Elites down, get the hell out!" and here the Marines gratulate me on a nice kill was kind of aspiring to always kill them first, because they seemed to be in charge.

Believability: Even in it´s Sci-Fi setting, everything seemed to be build on with logic in mind. The Hangar scene in the beginning of the level with Keyes and Cortana narrating like we knew what happened (which we didn´t, only they where there) was also a nice touch. This is also a nice touch to Halos believabilty, you don´t get briefed.
You don´t listen to some Mentor type about what happened and why you are here, because THEY don´t know themselfs.
All that is important is the Cole Protocol, you don´t know what it is. All you know is it has to do with the Aliens not finding the Earth by saving the AI at all cost, and so you go.
Also, the Marines seem like a combat force that have seen some stuff in their past, not like in previous games where you either have been alone, or surrounded by incompetent fucks whom the situation was too much a burden<.<

Weapon limitation:
A Super duper 1000lbs heavy super soldier can only lift 2 weapons, while a doctor from Black Mesa can carry a pistol, a revolver, a crossbow, a rocketlauncher, an SMG/assaultrifle with a Grenadelauncher, a shotgun, some grenades and Ammo...?
Wow<.<

Vehicles: FLYING BANSHEES WAS AWESOME!

Well, there is probably more too it, but i also like the grafics.

Thats all on my part.

Story? Halo has a story?

I saw it just as a "move from A to B killing everything between them". Maybe I just wasn't all that interested in the story, but it would mean it's boring as hell, as even Crysis had a decent plot.

Halo actually had a great story, with a series of books to expand on it,.

Hello everyone, Vrex here as expected.

I think it is safe to say Halo is in now way called innovative any more. In fact one guy on Youtube said it best:
"Oh boy I just mentioned Halo, I suppose therefore I have to call it overhyped, overrated and inferiour."
Yeah, those words are used more commonly to describe Halo these days. I think Halo CE was actually quite innovative, good plot, great gameplay with vehicles and fun weapons to use and smooth controls for consoles and finally great music the icing on the cake. There was something about it that had a lot of charm in that while playing it still wasn't afraid to poke just a little bit of fun at itself (listen to the Grunts) and delivered things with just a nice clever way that made it a blast to play.
Now see even Halo 2 and 3 managed to remain similar to the original Halo and I say good thing, because sure Halo 3's campaign didn't break new ground (except for the skull hunting and equipping, the saved film feature, the four player co-op with campaign scoring etc) but you can't really say it was identical to the other 'generic' shooters out there because it was bright and colourful and ignored the pressure to try new things that would only upset the hardcore fanbase. I don't care that Masterchief doesn't shoot plasmids out of his fingers, I don't care that he can't call in airstrikes and I really don't care that he doesn't use a first person cover system.... somethings are good as they were and do NOT need changing.
Halo may no be the most creative but at least it knows what the hell it's doing.

But you know what, Halo 1 started a trend of games following it's design and is now being accused of not changing it's style. But forgive me for being so bold as to point out that Grand Theft Auto (which ever one it was) was the first true 3D sandbox game, it's hardly changed over the years but no one it attacking IT with accusations. Same with God of War, and Half Life for example. These games were genre definers and they haven't changed much. So why aren't there a million threads about them?
Because everyone just wants to Hate Halo because it is popular and now that the haters outnumber the fans it's safe to say that ship hath sailed but people never let it go so hence it'll keep going and the games that are just as deserving of criticism will forever be ignored.

Thanks for listening, as always if you just don't like Halo as it's not your kind of game and you prefer others.... disregard everything I said as this post was not intended for you.

Jesus Christ, I've read through almost the entire topic, and I noticed only one person pointed this out, but they were quickly buried among the filth. Halo: Combat Evolved took many things from many games, and mashed them together successfully to create a great game. THAT is what makes it innovative. Taking MANY good aspects and putting them into a game.

IMO: first halo was decent, halo 2 was more halo 1:Remarketed and halo 3 was more halo 2:Remarketed HARDER. in the gaming industry innovation these days is synonymous with copypasta. my hatred spawns not from the game itself but from the idiots who continue to purchase this crap, adding to the relic games money pile and all the while the gaming industry progresses up its own ass. stop buying halo, lets force relic to move and on already and stop leeching on the unwashed casual gamers of society.

If there was this question, report it for deletion. Thanks!

I go over the internet, and people keep talking about Halo being innovative [like in the other Innovative FPS thread]. I think it is worth a seperate thread to talk about it.

Was I the only one who saw the standard "Here's is your weapon, go kill bad guys" scheme? I really don't have a clue why it is innovative!
Perhaps its called innovative because it is. If you looked below the surface at what constitutes the game and what was around at the time perhaps you would get a better idea. It is certainly more innovative than this thread, and I'm sure that bu jumping on the "HALO SUCKZORZ" bandwagon you have caused yourself to be 'the only one' who thinks that way.

Perhaps it was innovative in a manner besides the storyline?
Why all the hostility? Asking more questions doesn't make you look any more wiser or cooler, so if you wish to personally attack me as the OP please do it on private, using the PM featue and don't derail the thread.

I deny that putting features from many good games makes a game innovative, and I don't think anyone will ever convince me that I am wrong in this matter.

I don't think it was all that innovative. But it was, in 2001, one of the best FPS games available for consoles. Can anyone ever list any genuine problems with Halo: CE? Mostly, they can't. The sequels are over-rated, but Combat Evolved is in no-way a bad game. It's a very well made game, that didn't do much, but what it did do was almost perfect.

I suppose Doom and Quake don't exist in your world.

Anyway, the first Halo was innovative because it was pretty much the first console game with online multiplayer that was easy to use and fun to play. It also introduced the "sissy shield" ie. hide in a corner to get all better. I suppose that some find that as an innovative addition as well. Other than that, Halo was your average FPS.
The flaw in your theory, is that Halo CE on console didnt have any online of the sort. And became popular well before it got on PC

Halo is called innovative since practically all modern FPS's stole ideas from it. Makes sense?
It's responsible for all the FPS clones that are all the same we have today.

Its pretty obvious you weren't paying attention, or didn't even play the games.

Tell me, what was the Story in the Story arc?

The original halo was considered innovative because of the One button grenade, and its controller based control scheme. Also Halo 2 was the first really popular/functioning fps.

It was not innovative. It was a decent game for a new system (at the time) and people wanted a new Space Marine. The first game was the only justifiable one. the story line was believable, as far as sci fi goes. 2 and 3 are unmitigated shit with bungie just pumping the money tank till it hits E. All you do in the game is grab a rifle, and kill aliens till you need more ammo then HERE COMES THE CLIMAX, you switch guns and keep shooting........

Blargh.

It's like somebody asking why people call Virtua Fighter, Soul Blade or Final Fantasy "innovative".

Because Halo innovated stuff. It this really so hard to understand? Recharging health bar. Dedicated grenade button. Really, really sharp AI. Two-weapon limit. A small arsenal that you get complete access to almost right away. Do I have to spell it out? Whether or not you personally like the game has nothing to do with how ahead of its time it was, and how much it changed the face of FPS titles forever. Besides, innovation doesn't equate with quality, so even the haters should be on board with this.
