Duke Nukem 3D had an idependent melee button...

And I'm pretty sure I remember playing a game with an idependent grenade button when I was quite young, but I can't remember that far back.

halo was the first decent game to the 'new gen' xbox, along with a cult following of casual young gamers.

console gamers had never seen such a good FPS before. however, i'd previously been playing unreal tournament ('99) online for about 2 years.

my first and lasting impression is that halo is a mediocre mainstream FPS that took advantage of the new gen console FPS market before anything else.

p.s. space marines were in the alien and warhammer franchise over a decade before the halo game.

Ok, so Duke had a separate melee button, but no game before had separate grenade button, the two gun system, the regenerating health system, the vehicles worked into the gameplay so smoothly. Halo wasn't the best game ever, but it helped move the fps genre along by doing so many things right.

ITT elitist fanboys of ye old games who flame halo because its what everyone else is doing.
It's better then all the good 'ol boys who praise Halo because that's what everyone else is doing. Seriously, everyone has an opinion, but there are still the facts to consider: Halo added nothing new to the FPS genre. Updated graphics are NOT considered anything new, that happens with every game. The dual-control style has been around since goldeneye, and regenerating health has been around since the SNES. All Halo did was popularize online play for the Xbox. And no, it was not the first online game either.

Love it or hate it, that's your choice, but don't spew information when you have no clue what you are talking about. That just lets everyone know how stupid you really are. Yes, I'm talking to you |Ancient|.

Now please stand aside while I perform the ceremonial necro-thread sacrifice...

What do you mean no clue, my opinion about said game remains with myself. Also every thread that has mentioned halo involves the same people badmouthing it just mainly for the fact because it seems to get them cookie points with fellow 'hardcore gamers' is it just popular to bash on popular things like a lot of people seem to do with mainstream things be it Movies, Music, Vidya games?
Just so we can be friends again, I just want to point out that you never said anything about the game, so when I said people had no clue about what they were saying, it could not have included you. I apologize if I made you feel that you were the target of the rest of my post. That being said, I agree that people do enjoy to bash popular things, but sometimes those things deserve it. Halo might not be bad for the typical reasons people say it is(ie whatever is popular to say at the time), but that does not mean that Halo doesn't deserve some of the negativity it receives. Either way, whether it is good or bad, it makes money, so it's not like it's going anywhere any time soon. Just like Rocky. And Jaws. And Saw. And GTA. And the Sims. And Metal Gear. And...

It's because Halo took all the stuff that other FPSs were doing right, compiled it all together into a big video game equivalent of brunswick stew, and threw it out there. It's not that it's the most innovative shooter. It's just the first one that got all its shit straight.
But it was still on the XBox, which broke shit a bit. (Shooters are more fun on PC, goddamnit.)
Well, sure, but that brings up the other point. Consoles hadn't had any particularly knockout shooters by the time it came out, so any game that was halfway decent was going to be overstated to be better than it actually is.
