Why has rock music (just rock) become so diluted and mainstream?

Ah well, metal's still going strong.
for now it is but im finding that it's becoming more popular with the 12 year old's so i see it becoming a lot more mainstream in the near future and i would hate for metal to be ripped from the underground like that because it kicks ass

The trick with Rock these days, is that it is only even somewhat decent music when the band is not well known, playing small venues. That way, they are not the drivel you hear on the radio or exact copies of the same band releasing the same high pitched angst ridden teens anthem. That, or even go for some canadian lesser known rock like Sam Roberts or Matt Good, both extremely talented in the ways of rock.

Rock?

1. There is always going to be those groups that are going to try to dilute to appeal to the masses, either because they like money or because they feel their music should be heard by the masses (one is noble one is lame, so be careful not to jump on the judgment bandwagon too quickly)

2. I would suggest that pop and hip-hop are more victims of the kind of "selling out" dilution described. When upper middle class white teens are getting dreads and sporting bling, you know something went amuck.

If you don't like it, don't listen.
Easier said than done. It infects the masses heads and you hear it from them. You can only do so much but in the end your shithead of a next door neighbor will still listen to it. It's more than turn off the TV or radio, it's get it away from me. It's the second coming of the black plague (ok maybe not THAT harsh).

I weep for neither. I hate the term "hardcore", it just means people want to get into a penis measurement argument, and things like "hardcore" are what people seem to want to find, to prove they really are into something. Hardcore is just another way of conforming and fitting into a niche that can be marketed to.

I'm going to do the brave thing and say: I like trance techno.
Rip away.

hay trance techno is fine it's the mainstream techno that shits me with the mixing of the 2 pop songs and some synth added to it to make it sound a little different then every one thinks it the best thing to ever existed then you tell them to listen to the real stuff and they say no thats crap and then the next trend comes along and the process repeats itself. what a ugly world we live in where we are controled by the media in such a way and anyway how can you call some of the stuff that is spat out of the media music anyway

It's been said before, but it's important to reiterate that MTV is a horrible source for not just music, but entertainment in general. The sad thing is, MTV is probably the only thing left that makes American television worse than Australian (where I'm from) television.

Simply put, classic rock is far better than the rock of today, and there's not really much that can be done about that. The fact is that musicians today simply aren't as talented as people like Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Angus Young, David Gilmour and such. There are no bands who can be compared to The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd or Zeppelin.

You have to appreciate today's music for what it is (Not all of it, I agree with the OP that most of those bands he mentioned are shit.), look for the few remaining bands who are pretty good, find some you enjoy, and stick with them. Other than that, wait until 2011. I have a theory that music is at it's best at the beginning of a new decade, and gets worse near the end.

Just because something is mainstream does not mean it is bad, I mean look at windows. Vastly superior to mac.

There has been no good music this decade period. Rock is not the only one.

I don't see how music is much worse now than it ever was. There's always bad music hanging around, but there's still good music too.

Like Paramore. =P

That's a shame, when I don't want to have a discussion like this I just don't go into the thread. But then that's just me.

Gunz N' Roses were from the 80's/90's.
I'm torn about the Gunners, on the one hand they have Slash, who is a fairly decent guitarist. But on the other hand they have Axl Rose. And he has his very own tier of douchebaggery.
So all in all it evens out to Guns and Roses being a patheticly average band.
