Why has rock music (just rock) become so diluted and mainstream?

That's a shame, when I don't want to have a discussion like this I just don't go into the thread. But then that's just me.
In very rare instances, these types of discussion actually yield new and interesting arguments. Since it's the escapist and not a lesser 4chan evil, I thought it might be one of those rare occasions.

This is what I get for having hope.

Haha, yeah because Ultimate-Guitar.com is really where new and interesting music discussion happens :p
It used to be before every other tabulature site got shut down and the filth that lined their forums needed to find a new home.

I don't think all moderon rock is crap, just the mainstream drivil. If you want good music you just have to look a little harder, no one is gonna walk up and give you music that you like. It's a personal thing that you must do, well...personally.

There was some program I saw, I forget where, that was about how corperations like MTV and whatnot do a "coolhunting" thing to find whats popular and pump it out for max profit. Then MTV becomes the source for all things "cool" and now we have a lovely cycle where what is "cool" becomes what corperations want to be profitable.

They figured out they can pick up chicks by wearing makeup and super tight jeans and singing about their emotions

Don't see a problem.

In fact, for me, the Year 2008 is far better in terms of quality than 2007 was.

Try:
Tribe after Tribe - M.O.A.B.
Volbeat - Guitar Gangsters & Caddilac Blood
Blaze Bayley - The Man who would not die
Pyramaze - Immortal
Amaseffer - Exodus: Slaves for Life
Dominici - O3 A Trilogy (actually 3 Albums, obviously)
Airborne - Runnin' Wild
Whitesnake - Good to be Bad
Jorn - Lonely are the Brave

and last but not least: Wake the Sleeper from Uriah Heep (add exclamation marks as needed)

Gunz N' Roses were from the 80's/90's.
I'm torn about the Gunners, on the one hand they have Slash, who is a fairly decent guitarist. But on the other hand they have Axl Rose. And he has his very own tier of douchebaggery.
So all in all it evens out to Guns and Roses being a patheticly average band.
Never a truer word said. Axl Rose; model beater, trash, asshole.

Like a few have said, 'rock' music, as you call it has been over-exposed from some time now, I remember the days when Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit and Korn were first all whored to the high heavens and soon began to churn out single after single. Not that this was the first time anything of this nature has happened.

Whether you're into the softer 'emo' stuff or into the heavier stuff with Bree singing they're both simple extremes of the same genre (metal), once they'd made everyone sick of rap-rock (**blames RATM too**) and Brandon Boyd strumming then stripping on stage, they decided to go one step further, in 2 separate directions.

We all know how smug people get when they really JUST listen to metal and they're given the excuse to sound overly cultured by saying they're into heavy metal, black metal, doom metal, gloom metal, speed metal, thrash metal, rash metal, death metal, rap metal, nu-metal, hardcore and emo (etc.) I get really bored when stood listening to how cultured some fuckers think they are because they've just reeled of the list above.

In my opinion, it's pretty much all pop music now, despite the genre they claim to be. You will just have to look for any sultanas amongst the rabbit droppings and don't be taken in when the next "new genre" rears it's ugly trendy head.

If you don't like it, don't listen.
Easier said than done. It infects the masses heads and you hear it from them. You can only do so much but in the end your shithead of a next door neighbor will still listen to it. It's more than turn off the TV or radio, it's get it away from me. It's the second coming of the black plague (ok maybe not THAT harsh).
I understand. Music seemes to be used for everthing these days, advertising and TV idents especially, and even as little as a decade ago it wasn't quite so prevalent(SP?) as it is today.
I do not listen to radio or watch too much TV so I find it quite easy to let the majority of inane shite pass me by.
My taste in music is failry old school, Motown / Stax Soul and rock / metal and some Asain artists. if you broaden your horizens it's easy to ignore the Basshunters and Jordan Bros. of the world.

I mean Camp Rock?? WTF?!

And according to statistics I just made up for every 1 out of 13 people is/was/will be/pretends they?re involved in a band.
I lol'ed.

Also, it's not that difficult to avoid mainstream radio. Just turn it off and pop in a CD/iPod. Better yet, get satellite radio. They have playlists just like commercial radio, but the vast variety of stations means exposure to all kinds of new stuff. Pandora is great for internet radio, too (also on your iPhone).

Music is an entirely subjective thing indeed; though musical scholars have the awesome job of analysing it all down to it's core components. I think the thing I find most obnoxious is when people can't answer why they like a song. I don't mean they need to tell why this chord progression or this syncopated beat or that lyric makes this song great. But something more thoughtful that, "I dunno, I just do," would be nice.

On a personal and entirely subjective band plug - I think Muse and Coheed & Cambria are doing/have done incredible things for rock music in recent years.
