I guess it takes a certain person to like fallout 3, or nastalgia allows you to look past the flaws and just take in the fallout universe. I assume you've never played the old fallout games, which were classics. Since you've never played the old fallout games or know any of the lore the 1950s theme doesn't make any sense to you.

In the fallout universe, all oil and fossil fuels ran out, so we developed fission and nuclear power to the point of everything was nuclear powered. The 50s were all about box shaped robots and nuclear power, so in this alternate universe the 50s style never ended. If it was based off of modern tech there wouldn't be lasers, plasma rifles, mini nuke launchers, and robots. Which would be lame.
Thats helpful in explaining it. No I've never played the other games. Although I've heard Fallout 3 is a let down in comparison to 2. But once again I don't know.
Fallout 2 is completely different, fallout 2 is a turn based sandbox rpg, sort of. Fallout 3 is more action oriented which is alright, can hardly fault bethesda for making it how it is.

But I felt like you did at first, when I first got it, I played for a bit, then I was like "Man this game blows." then I picked it up a while later, and loved it. I think you should give it a second try, but try not to compare it to oblivion, while the gameplay style is similar put yourself in the mind set of your character. You'll find that the world is actually pretty immersive and has a ton of stuff to explore, although it's a nuclear wasteland, it has a certain charm.

I didnt like the game for the same reasons, enviroments were dull, combat was dull, characters were dull, the story was dull.
But thats just my opinion, i too was a big oblivion fan
So wait. Lemme understand this. The uninteresting characters, redundant forest or mountaint setting, and horrible story in Oblivion are somehow not dull to you? Do you also eat paste and love the flavor? FO3 had some of the best designed environments ever to come out of Bethesda. Go into any of the random dungeons in FO3 and they aren't redundant crap or the same cave layout. Oblivion had the same 4 cave layouts repeated infinitely, same with Aylied ruins. The characters for the most part had actual character to them. And the story, well, okay. The main story is merely passable, but side stories are much better. (Broken Steel and the Pitt in particular are the best)

If can't appreciate the increase in style and substance of FO3 in those areas, I pity you. And inb4 Morrowind > Oblivion, which is so very true. Oblivion was crap compared to Morrowind, and is crap compared to FO3.
Oh I cant stand oblivion any more, once I had sampled most of the quests, skills and completed the story for the hell of it I saw all the copy pasting. I put a good 15 hours into fallout 3. Once I was well established in the world in enjoyed it, but then it faded and I noticed the dull repetative combat where you click till the enemy dies (just like in oblivion) or freeze time then miss most of your shots because they are more than 5 meters away. If you are not using a shotgun and they are not in your face, Vats is merely a slower way to inflict the same amount of damage.(Thats with small guns maxed out)
As for the enviroments, if you enjoyed them, more power too you, but personally, they were so boring to me, some areas were very nice, but for the most part it was all filler.

Ok first off, you're complaining about realism IN A GAME. Complaining about realism here is like complaining about how realistic Halo is. If the game was Call of Duty or something I could understand because that is based off of REAL LIFE. If the game was realistic then it wouldn't make any sense at all givin the fact that the world hasn't ended yet, so complain about things that the game tried to do and failed at rather than things that were never intended.

It seems like you're just being negative and looking for things to complain about. What you may like in a game, others may not.

1. I am a massive Oblivion fan (insanely modded of course), but I still played vanilla oblivion and enjoyed it immensely. As such I was optimistic for fallout 3. In comparison to Oblivion, Fallout 3 has worse environments, less immersive scenery and what I call 'ridiculous' wildlife...
Whilst i didn't love Fallout 3, i still thought it was pretty good. I did find the scenery a bit dull and monotonous at times, but i suppose it is part of the game's setting. If they had colorful and expressive environments it just would be too contrary to Fallout's style.
2. Retrofuturism: This is purely personal taste but the I can't stand the 1950s theme of the game...
I actually enjoy retrofuturism for particular games like Fallout. But i guess it's just a matter of taste

3. The voice acting is worse than oblivions, and that's saying something.
I didn't really find it that impressive or bad. It's obviously lacking in comparison to say Mass Effect or KOTOR.

4. I CANT JOIN THE BAD GUYS!!!! I completely agreed with what the enclave was doing, screw the irradiated and save what's left of the world. But you can't join them, what's up with that?!?!
Yeah, i agree completely. That was pretty dissapointing.

5. Ok, seriously, who thinks that the 'Brotherhood of Steel' is a cool name? It sucks. Its an awful name for the people you have to join. It reminds me of the homosexual steel mill workers from 'The Simpsons'.
Not something i particularly noticed, but i suppose it's not the most extravagent name they could've come up with.

6. This is a pet hate but; in any game with guns: THERE SHOULD BE IRONSIGHTS!!!!! I get so annoyed when I right click to raise the gun to my eye level and it doesn't happen. That is such a big immersion killer for me.
I also prefer iron sights. Even though Fallout 3 is an Action/RPG not an FPS, when it comes down to it there is alot of shooting to be done (unless you just stick to melee weapons). Along similar lines i thought the free aim was pretty poor.

7. I couldn't get immersed in the story because I had discovered within 2 hours of the game that its setting was so ridiculous that I just didn't care. Sure I was mildly impressed with the tutorial and saw some realism ( I think) in the poorly named RAD ROACHES but when you get outside...the guns have no sights and the environment is insanely dull.
I suppose the focus of the game wasn't really in providing the most realistic simulation of what a post-apocolyptic world would be like, it's really not. But that sort of game would probably not be to alot of other people's tastes. So i suppose each to his own.

So many seems to think that Fallout 3 is meant to be our future, but it isn't. It is an alternate timeline that diverged from ours at some point in the 50s, where in the 50s style never died out. Others have mentioned this before, but they haven't yet mentioned that the laws of physics in Fallout are also different. Their based of what the 50s thought of nuclear energy and radiation. To them radiation made things grow large, vicious and crazed, the whole Godzilla thing, despite the fact that we know now that all radiation really does to a living thing is kill it. Many things that we understand about nuclear war, such as nuclear winter, were not developed in the 50s and thus are likely to have not occurred at all.

Moving on, I agree with some of your point on the lack of factions to diversify things, but by the late game there are some factions you can join through your Perks, the Lawbringer perk if you are Good and the Contract Killer perk if you are Evil. They don't add much to the story or gameplay, but they are a nice touch.

The voice acting in Fallout was far superior to Oblivion, not least because it feels like you can count the number of voice actors in Oblivion on one hand. Fallout had a greater variety of voice actors, and lacked any 'Begger' syndrome, although both suffered from poor character animation.

No one who ever played fallout 1 and 2 or even tactics(me) would agree with its hype, and i preferred Oblivion to it(though i preferred Morrowind to that, more immerisive) but its not necessarily a bad game, fun for a while and a 7.5 at least, though it gets repetitive

Well lets see after a atomic war wouldn't you think every thing would be a wasteland and with all the names and shit that's is asking the developers to make a whole new game which if you paid any attention they clearly stated "We wanted to make a fallout game a true squeal" but I agree retro theme is kind of wired but look at lore the time-line split around the 1950s.

The only things I didn't like were:

1. The songs on the radio were waaaay too limited
2. The fact that the end is the end and you're not allowed to further explore and sub-quest.

Besides these, I frickin' loved it. I'm gonna have to get the GotY edition when it's released!

Whoring a frachise!? Tactics and brotherhood of steel were whoring the franchise. Bethesda breathed some life into the otherwise dead series.

To the OP, I disagree with your opinion but respect it, I hope you have better luck finding a game you like in future.
Yeah, the whoring started with BoS and Tactics, Bethesda just kept up the tradition What-The-Fuck Chuck started.

Well, that's just your opinion. I find it to be rather stupid and ill-informed, but it's an opinion nonetheless.

But really, all your complaints, about the retro-futurism, the giant cockroaches, the purposefully overdone super mutants, these are all what Fallout IS. You're annoyed about the wastelands and the weird, mutated wildlife? What did you expect?

From what you've said it's clear that you dislike all that Fallout is, and therefore the only reason you bought the game must be because you didn't bother to research it (or any of the previous games) first. Therefore you've only got yourself to blame for your disappointment. QED.

My thoughts;

1. Oblivion does indeed have wondrous environments and visuals (IMHO still the best jaw-dropping moments). Fallout 3 was never going to be realistic...it's the future 'as seen from the perspective of the 1950's'. Remember the old 50's movies with giant ants, and fusion cars...that's what they/we thought the future be like.

2. I don't think you did understand it...and it be fair, neither did I at first...but I read the manual again.

3. The voice acting is definitely better in Fallout 3 (no doubt about it).

4. You can win the trust of a little girl, and send her off to be abducted by slavers...and you say you can't join the bad guys? This is simply the most evil moral choice I have seen in any game...never mind Oblivion.

5. It's only a name - this point is clutching at straws.

6. I thought there was...

7. Strange that Oblivion did immerse you...in one word - HOW?

I've played both games extensively, both have pro's and con's, I think Fallout 3 edges it though in terms on playability. Oblivion looks really sweet though.

I'm old enough to remember the impact the first Fallout game made. I loved that game so much and I remember very fondly slamming Fallout 2 into my disc drive and kissing my summer holiday good bye. I literally couldnt get enough of the games. I downloaded the Fallout pen and paper role playing game, I even sat through the god awful ps2 game to the end just out of principle and I for one, still have Tactics installed on my laptop and really love that game too.

Which is why i find it so hard to understand why i really, really, dislike Fallout 3.

Im not a fanboy in that sense that no matter what, i was going to be disillusioned with the game. I rate Bethesda so highly and really think that, cosmetically at least, they have done a great job bringing Fallout into glorious HD 3D. The game looks great.

But, its just lacking something. Hell, to be frank, I found it a bit boring. After about thirty minutes I realised I honestly didnt care about the story, the people, or anything to do with the whole game. There was no sense of wonder. It took me about twenty minutes to find and kill my first super mutant, and I was armed with some crappy rifle.

In the old games, the first time you happened across Super Mutants you'd panic, and hide, even if you were equipped with a mini gun, you'd think twice about taking them on. In this version, I didnt fear them or anything, really. Even the final scenes with the Enclave were just an excercise in button clicking. I mean, c'mon, faced with the president finally I managed to talk him into suicide in about two minutes. Wheres the challenge or the sense of scale in that? It seemed less of a game rather than an excercise in walking from A to B via subways tunnels C,D,E (etc) and ticking off another required element of a Fallout game. Mutants, tick. Ghouls, tick. Brotherhood of Steel, tick. Enclave, tick. So on and so forth.

Who knows, maybe I am a massive fanboy afterall and how much I loved the previous games has tainted my enjoyment of this one. But, regardless, I do feel Fallout 3 is massively overrated and doesnt deserve the constant praise its got from most circles.

1. GNR Radio Mod...you can add 100 near-authentic 50's songs
2. Broken Steel...lets you continue...
