Why I Hate The Direct Hit: A TF2 Discussion.

For those of you not in the know, TF2 recently had another double class update to both the Demoman and the Soldier: the War Update. Most of this update was cause for great joy: it introduced several great new maps, it introduced a crafting system, and it gave the two classes a bunch of fun, useful, and balanced weapons... with one exception.

That exception is the Direct Hit, the Soldier's alternate rocket launcher. This launcher shoots rockets at a faster rate than the normal one, deals more damage than the normal one, and deals automatic mini-crits to any enemy in the air. The only downside to the user is that it has a reduced blast radius.

And it pisses me the hell off.

Why do I dislike the Direct Hit? I think it does far too much damage currently. The Direct Hit can one-shot a Scout, even without hitting the Scout in midair... and ironically, most of the time it will be hitting the Scout in the air, since Scouts love to hop about like a madman when trying to dodge explosives. When you add into the equation the fact that Scouts have to get up close and personal to do the majority of their damage, the reduced blast radius doesn't mean diddly.

Scouts aren't the only ones suffering though: the Direct Hit can also kill Heavies VERY quickly. Scouts at least have the speed to make them decently hard to hit: but Heavies are fat, blundering targets. Their high hitpoint totals are inconsequential: from what I've seen, in the face of any Soldier worth his salt and the Direct Hit in hand, the Heavy is going to lose unless he's already spun up his gun, the Soldier is wounded, or he's being healed (and even then, it's a toss up as to who the winner will be.)

Heavies used to be something to fear.

People have attempted to argue that this damage increase is a-ok thanks to the blast radius being reduced (aka the weapon requires more skill to use), but this is counteracted by the speed of the rockets. Soldiers using the old launcher had to predict where the enemies were going to dodge in order to hit them with the slow-moving missiles, but the DH's rockets are fast enough that the Soldier no longer needs to worry about such things. It's actually EASIER to use in a way, once you get used to the rocket speed. And even if it weren't easy to use, there's so many people playing Soldier right now with the DH equipped that if a moderately skilled player isn't around to kill you, the spam from 6 man DH Soldier teams will.

Perhaps the hatred I feel towards the Direct Hit will go down a bit post-Christmas, when the Soldier spamming has been reduced, but for some reason I doubt it. Unless the weapon is nerfed or changed in some way, I feel that it's rough times ahead for anyone who isn't a Demoman armed with the Chargin' Targe.

So how do the TF2 players out there feel about the Direct Hit? Do you think that it's just a problem of there being too many Soldiers right now, or is the weapon imbalanced? Or do you not see much of a problem at all?

After reading this i've come to the obvious conclusion that you are horrible at TF2 and have no idea what you are talking about.

The just sounds broken.

Note, I've only played TF2 on 360.

But I know broken when I see it.

I like it. I just wish that a rocket that hit right next to the feet of my enemy would damage them. They said 70% reduction, not 100% dammit.

My only problem with the Direct Hit is that it can be used so effectively at close range in addition to long range. Valve said the weapon was intended for sharpshooting, yet Soldiers can easily kill people with it up close, where it much harder to dodge. I think the damage should be scaled based on how far the rocket has traveled.

At least that's my experience with it. To be honest I haven't encountered to many Soldiers using it.

I don't really have problems with it as a scout. Most soldiers don't even know I'm behind them about the bust a shell in their backs. As for the heavy, valve is acting like he needs another weakness. Myabe they should have gone through with the portable bofors cannon.

Both the Targ/Eyelander and the Direct Hit/Equaliser are broken at the moment. Valve will be stepping in when they have enough data; but yeah, the Heavy needs some loving.

Sorry, but it's the damned Chargin' Targe that annoys me. All you hear all day is the Demoman death cry over and over again, and you can charge with you grenade launcher as well, so that's just a free crit.

Quit yer bitchin'. It's fine.

Also, Heavies were NEVER feared. They could be countered into next week by sentries, Spies, Snipers, Demomen, they were nothing but walking target practice dummies from the start. Even more so with the Sandman and the Direct Hit, now.

It does sound quite overpowered. But I only play TF2 on the 360 so I don't have much to worry.

I fell sorry for you man.

retard. scotth isnt horrible at tf2 and if you signed up just post that it was pointless. scotth is a decent player he pretty much owns me most of the time.
from experience both the DH and E/CT are overpowered i hate the range of the eyelander because no other class has a long melee weapon that can get in close to it. dont get me started on the targe either

Why anyone would play an FPS on a console is beyond me.

I've heard discussion that the heavy needs another update. It's definitely out of date in the game these days. There's really no reason to play one since you either get gunned down really fast or one-shot killed by a fully charged sniper.

I haven't found the Targe/Eyelander/Equalizer to be that broken, honestly. The only part of the update I draw an issue with is the Direct Hit.

I think that the Heavy needs some damn damage resistance from the new weapons, or at least a different unlocked primary weapon. Can anyone honestly look me straight in the face and say that they use Natascha? The thing's more useless than the Backburner.

I've actually heard this idea pop up quite a lot, and I like it. As far as the other bit goes, it depends on the server. Some servers are stocked to the brim with DH users, others have more traditional Soldiers running around.

Also, everyone ignore the troll and hit report. Best thing to do is to clear him out quick-like without giving him attention.

It appears the perfect balance that was TF2 has been busted by all of these updates.
