You guys really are serious, right? Oh boy... Like, no, you're all super duper wrong. If someone was beating a screaming, crying, wailing child in front of you, you do nothing? Just so you're all aware, that's not close to average and the majority of the world, regardless of skin color or language would step in.

This says a lot more about ya'll...

Do me a favor, go out and try it. See what happen. Get a kid, get a stick or a whip or whatever, go to a movie theater on Friday night, and start beating the kid mercilessly. See what happens. Bet me the majority don't just 'go with it'
It says my faith in humanity is very very low.

Oh, I'm sure the majority of the world would like to think so, always fun imagining yourself to be the hero. And, sure, maybe some of them would. I have seen the opposite happen, people stand around, maybe not happily, wonder if they should do something, mutter and grumble, and don't actually do anything.

I've been in that situation myself in school, with one screaming kid, 2-3 bullies and myself being present. I take a step forwards, one or two of the bullies (who are larger than myself) loom over me, and that's all the help I gave. I've been on the receiving end of bullying in front of crowds that didn't do that.

In any case, not attacking people until there aren't witnesses is not hard.

Hundreds of people knew what Weinstein, or Cosby or Saville were up to for decades, few of them who weren't being directly affected did anything. Millions of people know about institituonalised abuse in the church, police forces, military etc and don't care.

Yes hundreds out of the what, 10,000 celebs in Hollywood? Did millions? billions? You're telling me if literally every single person in the world knew about Weinstein, about the rapes and abuse, the majority would do nothing? That between a father and a mother sending their 16 year old to an 11pm 'casting' call in Harvey's hotel room, at least one of them if not both, knowing Weinstein intends to rape the girl, would do nothing? And that every cop in a hundred miles, knowing exactly what it going on, would do nothing? That every person from LA to Chicago, South and North America, would at best click their tongue and at worst want to join in?

how do any of you live thinking that a man could throw you to the ground and start skinning you alive in a Starbucks and at best one person will ask what's going on, while every single other person just looks away?

I think about killing myself virtually every day...so uh, poorly.

And yes, particularly as a trans person, I do believe I could be outright murdered and have no one help me. Hell, black people have to fear that it will be a cop doing it!

The world fucking sucks.

Most of those 10,000 legitimately didn't know anything. Out of the hundreds that did know (and knew for many years), hundreds didn't do anything.

Every now and then there's a big government (or something private charity) funded campaign to get people to report domestic violence, because there's a serious problem of people turning a blind eye.

Or, to put it another way, bullying exists, it's a serious problem. If the majority of people were actively against bullying, it wouldn't be.

If the polls start working again, you might want to start one asking if people have ever been bullied (or worse), and had people know about it and do nothing. Hell, authority figures whose job it is to stop them do nothing.

Should we start giving an ultimatum to first offense bullies, saying ?Ok, you did something awful there and we need to figure out why to prevent it from happening again. Otherwise you and most likely your parents or legal guardian will need to be dealt with permanently.?

Would that clear it up? Or is it possible that a more humanitarian ?Kumbaya? approach would suffice?

Idk. Tough call. The former sounds harsh but the latter might take several generations, and is seemingly rooted in wishful thinking once considering the flaws of human nature.

Who is the "we", though? Plenty of places have "zero tolerance" policies for bullying, they just get ignored cause it's easier that way. Especially when the people entrusted with stopping bullying are the same people that look bad if bullying is acknowledged and/or acted upon.

Harsher punishments don't work when punishments aren't actually being given out.
