why is Fallout 3 catching so much crap?

Ok I am gonna start off and say I love Fallout 3. I spent 100+ hours with a single character and am now currently preparing my second character for the first DLC pack due next week (and 1 day 4 hours 37 minutes 41 seconds) and I can point out its flaws. I'll tackle the easiest target first. The main story is horrible. It starts off really well and gets flushed halfway through. Even the sidequests seem to end rather abruptly with no chance of an extra dialogue option after the quest is complete.

Now lets look at the gameplay for a minute. It almost feels like you are shooting the same super mutants or Raiders in the face throught the game. Even worse is those god damned scorpions. I got sick of them after the millionth time they seemed to pop out of nowhere. Also why was there no onscreen damage indicator? It is so frustrating getting shot in the ass but not knowing where it was coming from. Dungeons suffered from all lookin similar and there was a few that trapped me because there is just no noticeable difference to distinguish where you have been and where you haven't. Another thing is the treasure. I like treasure but in so many areas it felt unrewarding. "Oh wow a quantum cola or some ammo". Most of the named weapons weren't in dungeons but held by NPC's.

My last gripe is about the ultimate lack of freedom. My first time I was a good guy. I tried to do the right thing everytime. So this playthrough is evil. I can't say I am impressed with the lack of choice I have. I was hopin to turn the family against Arefu but the only choice I had was to help them to more or lesser degrees. It kinda seems to be truly evil is to go and wipe out the townsfolk yourself. I was expecting more of a puppetmaster pullin the strings instead of getting my hands dirty. There is also the karma imbalance. Why can you kill an evil character, rack up good karma, yet these characters weren't really given a chance to be evil. More offsetting is wiping out some bad characters yet you still get dinged by "stealing" thier stuff after they are dead.

Have any of you visited No Mutants Allowed? There's where you'll find your proof. Bethesda tried to imitate the Fallout universe. Poorly. Fallout 3 is a completely effortless, blatant attempt to milk somebody else's cash cow. It's like the folks at Bethesda glanced at the box art, picked things at random and then made an Oblivion total conversion mod based on those things, lazily slapped guns and V.A.T.S. on it.

Indeed. They're releasing the VR mission one first, but then the one afterwards changes the ending and bumps the level cap up... I pretty much saw that coming though, reason for it being so low.
It is the 3rd one that changes the end and boosts the lvl cap.

That's how it feels to an old fan as well.

But that doesn't mean it's a bad game. It's just, I would have enjoyed Oblivion just as well, it seems.

The only people (well, most of them anyway) who got disappointed with Fallout 3 are the veterans of the previous two games. Converting a turn-based post-apocalyptic RPG into a post-apocalyptic FPSRPG hybrid is nothing to scoff at.

What I'm getting at is that the ones disappointed are the ones with the wrong or ridiculously high expectations for it. Come inwith limited knowledge about it and it's a good game. Very immersive. And for the people who think it's bland because it's not vibrant: the game world is a post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland. The future is bleak, so the lack of rainbows (I'm exaggerating) is welcome and makes sense out of context.

Exactly the ending was pure murder. Thank the Internet Gods though because Bethesda is fixing it with DLC.

Every game gets people who hate it, so you just hag around a few people who dislike Fallout 3, no big deal.

Lolz because it's Oblivion with guns. Duh.

(This was intended as a joke by the way. I actually like Fallout 3 a lot.)

What was discussed in the thread. I would like to know, just out of interest.
You can find it here: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.84023#1186747

The OP said his main reasons for becoming alienated from Fallout 3 was because of the "lackluster ending, level cap, and finishing quests as either a good or evil character". The thread is pretty short--only about a page long.

Every game that has a lot of hype starts off as "the greatest game ever" and then, after a while people will start bashing it for the stupidest reasons. It's just the way of life.

Most of thev people who talk about games like that have never had the pleasure of PLAYING the game, but only watching. Watching someone else play a videogame isn't particularly enjoyable, watching someone play a game designed by Bethesda is almost as fun as watching paint dry on a hot day. I personally love Fallout 3 and am not a big fan of Oblivion mainly because in Fallout 3 there is the ability to kill someone in slow-motion and watch the head explode (literally, you can watch an eye go one way and the jaw bone go another). People just fear the unknown.

Fallout three does NOT deserve to be considered part of the fallout series. It had all the potential to be a good fallout game but somewhere in the execution it lost track of the small details within fallout 1 and 2 which, I believe, where necessary to be a good fallout game. I won't go into details, lovers of 1 and 2 will have thier own big reasons as to why it wasn't a fallout worthy game. Will have to say: The ending sucked, as that was my biggest gripe.

Now that isn't to say fallout 3, in it's own merits, wasn't a decent game. By far it was a beautiful game with many well executed features that shine. Many that would of, if coupled with the minor details of 1 and 2, would of made fallout 3 an improvement over 1 and 2. By itself fallout 3 rates highly because it is a damn good game.

I just don't think it was fallout worthy.

Seeing how Fallout 3 is currently the game getting referenced the most over at Gamefaqs, I figure it's probably the #1 game getting played right now. Naturally, when you have that many people playing it, you're going to find somebody complaining about it.

Personally, I thought Fallout 3 was great... all the way up until I finished the main quest. Then that total let down of an ending smacked the awesome out of the game like a supersonic herring across the face.

I thought Fallout 3 was solid, but not great. In many places the writing is terrible and it is FILLED with bugs that can make it impossible to complete quests. There are many petty annoyances that reduce long-term value, such as the fact that the overland map doesn't bear a lot of resemblance to the terrain it's supposed to be mapping. The quest markers that are supposed to help you find things never seem to work when you actually need help finding something. Seeing that same damn subway station gets old after the 50th time.

Still, I'm glad I bought it. The only other games I bought this year were Hellgate: London and Mass Effect. I think Fallout 3 and Mass Effect are about comparable in total quality.

Which most likely will not be available for the PS3 :(

I loved Oblivion, and I love Fallout 3 as if it were my illegitimate first-born son. If people talk shit about my game, and they are within a walking-distance from me, I will go and give them a firm talking-to (Weren't expecting that, were you?).

When I first started playing Fallout, I liked it, the introductory portions were good, the voice acting was unique and not annoyingly monotonous like Oblivion, but what started as a few annoyances became a set of big problems pretty quick.

The combat is annoying as hell, and I don't mind the challenge of it, but the lackluster autosave system isn't doing anything and I have to fight the same Talon mercs over and over and over again.

The story is terrible after you leave Vault 101, with the possible exception of the part where you get your father out of the place (written for spoiler avoidance). I don't care if there's a mod that will fix that, it should have been there in the first place.

Most of the skills and perks are useless after you hit the higher levels and have either the equipment or the sheer constitution to circumvent these issues.

Again, Bethesda failed to deliver a system where alignment gives you a real feeling of good or evil, it really comes down to shoot the guy and steal all his caps or save his wife from raiders, no middle ground.

I personally like V.A.T.S. even though many whine about it being an "insta-win" button, I think that it's fun.
