Why is it so hard to find honest game reviews?

Lately I've been trying to find an honest review of Black Ops. I can't trust Gameinformer or IGN because they got all the exclusive interviews and stuff like that so they're not going to be honest.

Even friends can't be trusted. For example in my school I can't find one Ps3 owner that will ever say anything other than "Black ops is so awesome the story is soooo great." and 360 owners have their minds clouded by Reach.

Even if they bought both consoles and a Super-PC, they may have been counting down the days until release, have every game in the series, and will probably say it's the best thing ever even if in the game they got rickroll'd .

This isn't just Black ops, it's almost all popular games ALL OF THEM.This will probably never end until someone makes some sort of miracle game that everyone enjoys and that won't happen anytime soon.

Did you ever think that Black Ops or these other games really are just that great, and that you are paranoid? It seems to me that popular games are popular for a reason, not to mention the fact that reviews are based on personal opinion. What right do you have to say that other peoples opinions are wrong, or not honest?

just watch it on youtube, look at its forums, understand that people's opinions are a part of their assessments, and make up your own mind.

Well, as I recall, Gameinformer said that Blackops was great, but still just more Call of Duty.

OT: I do extensive research into games I want, to the point of honestly being scared that it won't be a good game, and that I'll never play it.

Thankfully, the games I get are usually pretty solid, and I end up playing the crap out of them.

Maybe people like the games and they genuinely think the game is that good? I don't know, I guess by your logic, anyone that has a opinion differing from yours is automatically wrong and dishonest.

i disagree popular games are popular because of good marketing and appealing to the lowest common denominator. Its the same reason the majority bums avatar but neglects other hits like moon, inglorious basterds etc.etc.
Good marketing may help influence you to buy a game, but to say that it keeps you playing the game would make no sense. People don't(normally) continue playing a game they don't like.

Selling well on launch doesn't make the game popular. Being played all day every day by hundreds of thousands of people makes it popular. Marketing doesn't have a thing to do with that part.

I don't see how exclusive interviews leads to dishonest reviews. the person who does the review gives their opinion, thats all a review is really.

but its part of a knock on effect, if your game has any sort of online presence the amount of people playing (and thus talking about spreading it) greatly effects how decent an experience it is, happens to be the major reason WoW is close to un-killable (I like to believe that if a mass exodus went to sw:TOR then we could see the next generation mmorpg but thats just me)
But again, the online presence is determined by the amount of people that think the game is good.

Games that are generally considered bad have few to no online players for a reason.

WoW is popular because it has constant support and updates from the developers that pretty much come from the community suggestions. It's generally a balanced game that people find enjoyable. It survives because the people behind it listen to the community, and as long as people are happy with that, they'll play.

If the developers were to decide to make a huge, near game breaking change, people would leave, decreasing WoWs popularity.

As I said; People don't play what they don't like.

Maybe they are being honest. Maybe all the websites that spew out 9.5 out of 10 really do think that games deserve that. Most of the time though, I don't agree with them.

The best thing you could probably do, is to find out yourself whether or not you'll like it. You could get the most honest review ever, pointing out every pro and every con. But you won't know if you like it until you've tried it yourself.

Try lending the game off a friend, or just have a go at their place.

That or you could carry on looking for a game critic who has similar interests in video games.
