It's like Club Pengiun, aimed for little children with no real structure.

Except it doesn't have Penguins, which automatically make anything cool, therefore Club penguin is cooler than Maple Story.
Yep. PENGUINS WILL SOON RULE THE EARTH

You need friends to play with. I got to 83 and gave up because everyone I knew quit.

I'd like to know too. I think it has something to do with gamers' ingrown need to achieve petty goals and collect worthless trinkets just to have them all. For some this gets old fast, and for some it gets old slow. Judging from my roommate, (who plays Maplestory too much), I'd say nit also has something to do with the fact that even garbage can be fun if played with friends (Although I think his friends might just be internet friends who are right up there with imaginary friends). Of course he also plays online MMORPGs that looked boring to the nth degree.

Sometimes, just for a change of pace, i like the monotonous grind. Listening to the satisfying wham, and death squeal of my kill does wonders for relaxing.

I think it's because it combined my love of rpgs with my love of platformers. The platforming element makes fighting monsters more fun than the normal "click on monster till it dies" rigamarole. You actually have to time your attacks to keep the monster back; you actually need to outmaneuver the monster rather than just stand there all day attacking it.
What are you referring "click on monster till it dies rigamarole" to? I have never played an rpg where you did not have to outmaneuver the monster.
I used to play ragnarok online and that had one click combat. So did diablo if I remember correctly, and I'm pretty sure a bunch of others too that I can't think of at the moment.

Actually, now that I think of it, what RPGs other than maplestory required you to outmaneuver the monster?

Oh hey, look, I'm doing something with this account.

Anyway, I played for about a year, because for a while I had a horrendous computer that could barely run XP. I managed to get to lvl 70-something, but I dropped the game the second I got a gaming-worthy computer. It's the biggest grindfest I've ever experienced. When I was playing, and at my level, it took about an hour of gathering and killing the same damn monster in the same damn area just to get 10% closer to the next level. You're virtually forced to buy overpriced cash items that expire to enjoy the game, and the community is absolutely horrible.

The only slightly redeeming thing it had going for it was the platforming mixed in, but even that was pretty torturous at times. I'll never forget how pissed off I got at the jump quests.

The only plus i got from maplestory is me looking at the other Free to Play MMOs that Nexon had, Found Mabinogi and never left it.

I thought Maplestory was fun when it was just the main island and a few other place. But then I left for a year, and when I came back it was so overloaded with useless and annoying crap that I couldn't stand to play it any longer. Looking back, I really see now how bad it was, and the only reason I played it was because I had a few buds who played too. But now...god it's absolutley terrible.

Maplestory really does suck but at least it (tries) to deviate from typical RPG tropes. The Korean (real, decent) version has like...15 classes with about 20-25 different branching paths and playstyles. Granted most of these are just re-hashings of old classes, they add least add something new into the mix that keeps them interesting.

Talk about bringing back a thread from the dead...

OT: I played Maple Story for about an hour or so. I got bored very quickly. I didn't like the 2D side-scrolling elements, or the cartoony style.

I'm more of a "World of Warcraft" kind of an MMO player.

I can honestly kind of understand why it's fun, even though I personally don't like it at all. It's a nice little 2D platformer type game, something anyone who grew up in the 80's most undoubtedly misses right now. Personally I loved just about any side scrolling platform game.

It's pretty mindless to the point of flash games.

I guess people find it fun because its pretty bright and cheerful, has okay graphics, is easily customisable and you can use it as a glorified chat room.

It's not really fun, although at least it has adorable fluffy scorpions. Also, I find it funny that Nexon has MapleStory, which is just so damn boring, yet if you look at their other games (DFO, Mabinogi, etc.) you can see that it's actually a decent company....with horrid customer support.
