I don't like metal. If you were to compare music to martial artists, heavy metal would be a warrior of the Maori tribes. It is harsh, brutal, angry, mad, and utterly uncivilized. It may very well be effective at accomplishing what it set out to do, but only people who delude themselves could consider it a joy to spectate at its performance. Take these opinions as simply that: opinions.
Anyone I know who is into extreme metal is pretty zen.

The 'uncivilised' feel of it is indeed serves a primal and primitive release function to us, much like hunting down little digital men and shooting them in Call of Duty does.

You cannot say that deriving joy from a musical style is self delusion, joy is an emotion that happens when you have a stimulous that makes you feel good, and all kinds of music do that for people.

Also, you should listen to Iron Maiden and you will realise that it is neither harsh, angry or mad. It is highly structured, melodic music with the guitars turned up loud for extra effect.

Because it can be something of a juvenile genre [don't flam-aaargh!].

Hm..Well. The user-base seems to be aged from 14-24, and consists of people who don't really buy into the mainstream that much.
Those people tend to gravitate towards metal, methinks.

I dabble in that genre sometimes, too.
Not much, though. All that bearded screaming without a hint of irony gets a bit too much.

I hate it when these threads get overly long I feel compelled to read all of it and waste a lot of time but generally I do listen to a lot of Muse and Heavier stuff while gaming as it gets you in the mood while you rip someones head off.

Imagine playing CoD WaW to some poppy tunes...
O come on, everyone knows that playing CoD or Gears of War with this song:
is one of the greatest forms of entertainment known to man. Imagine sawing some monster in half with those tunes, hell yeah! Or Tiny Tim's 'Living In The Sunshine', that one has the same effect.

Real men play with those songs.

Its possibly because it attracts younger adolescents/younger men, and goes along with the whole "tough space marine shooting things in a manly way" culture that permeates gaming, I myself can't stand much metal, though I can appreciate why others like it. I'll just stick to my old fashioned rock and roll.

More of a hard rock type of guy myself. Though i tend to listen to a fair bit of metal. None of that screaming overly loud garbage though. But i must admit there is nothing that pumps you up more than a fast paced song in the middle of a killing spree.

Metal is making a comeback to a younger audience, I feel. Just by looking at fashion styles you'll notice a lot of people leaning towards the various permatations of "goth" and "metaller". This suggests more people are showing an interest in metal at a younger age. I know that from about 14-16 I was obsessed with all "genres" of metal, but once I started exploring other styles of composition I began to feel that the metal genre is saturated.

It could be the intrinsically aggressive nature of metal that appeals to us, in the same ways games let you release aggressiveness in a controlled environment. Any genre except death metal felt wrong on Gears of War, back in the day =7D

I like just about any genre, I've become much more open in the last few years. Metal isn't anything special, it's just as saturated as any other genre, probably moreso, and sometimes borders on supremist and inaccessible. However, it has plenty of gems in the coal, like all the genres.

I used to listen to metal, but then I found classic rock mostly Jimi Hendrix and now I'm very happy with my new genre

My old social sciences teacher always said that it's okay to put people in boxes. So I'll do just that.

- Metal appeals to a certain kind of person
- Games appeal to a certain kind of person

These two kinds of persons seems to be roughly the same. While that does not exclude people with different music tastes from playing games, or the other way around, there is just some coincidence there. It's no different than when you look at who likes rapmusic, and you roughly attribute to certain people, who comes from a certain social class, etc.

There were some comments on how "gamers are more intelligent and understand metal", and that's utter crap in my oppinion. I love metal. But it's in no way the "superior artform of music" that certain "metalheads" will try to convince you. In fact, I see an interesting coincidence here, that the same people who keep yapping off about how "alternative" and "more complicated" metal is, listen to the most commercially available metalbands(KoRn, Slipknot, etc.)

oh got something, I live in Finland now after moving from the US, going from a melting pot of music to a metal infested ice country, and I must say baggy pants are alright but all black leather clothes and strange hair is just plain odd (and I've seen some weirder shit here too)

God damnit. Typed out a long post about why gamers are often into metal, but accidentally hit back a page... grr.

Anyway, I'll summarise, tongue in cheek:

- Gamers are often off kilter personalities, ugly people, oddballs or socially inept.

- Oddballs and the socially inept often have strange ideas as to what constitutes cool - e.g many nerdy people love sci-fi and fantasy, but most "normal" people find it juvanile and lame (I'm not paying out speculative fiction, I love it) - and I think this translates with metal culture; most people see hairy ugly people with ragged neck beards trying to make as much noise as they can, but metal heads see these awesome guys just being super mad hardcore and awesome (they aren't).

- Socially inept often have an identity crisis in teenage years, and are drawn to metal because they love the idea of being super hardcore and screaming alot and can find a social group to belong to in it's culture simply brimming with other dorky unpopular people to befriend.

- Ugly people need a way to look cool while remaining ugly or fat. Long hair, scraggly neck beards and and angry look give them the broodiness they are looking for, so they join the metal culture to be with their kind.

- The music is only secondary, and the appeal is in the culture... Because who the hell could listen to most metal and say "Yeah. That's the stuff right there. That grindy, screamy, terrible cacophany is going to be the stuff I vomit down my eardrums for the rest of my life and I'll love it." It must be a sound that you adapt to because some other aspect of the culture is cool. It simply is not good music, and I won't believe people listen to the stuff solely on its auditory merits.

A lot of modern music I hear from genres other than metal just isn't dramatic enough for games in my opinion.
For me it's metal or classical (preferably a band that mixes the two).

I particularly hate gangsta rap (which sounds like a load of purile, self-congratulatory bullshit) and cheesy pop groups where no-one plays an instrument.

I'm not exactly sure why so many gamers listen to Metal. My best guess is probably that it's 'anti-conformist' just like 'their lifestyle'. Or it 'pumps them up', etc.

Personally, I don't like metal or any of it's sub-genres. I'm sure there are exceptions, but I can't think of any. I don't really care for old-school punk or punk in general. I do like a few hardcore bands though. /: I guess I just don't like metal because I'm not enough of a 'hardcore gamer'... Or something.

I also agree with Max... It seems that it's mostly atonal noise. Not my cup of tea I suppose.
