Well maybe gamers just have good taste in music? Hehe just wishful thinking. Anyway I'm not sure but to take a stab at it without reading the entire thread(I read bits and pieces) I'm gonna say that FPS games are some of the most popular games out there and for those who don't like shooters there are rpgs which are often fantasy based. Now take a look at metal, it talks about pain and death(relation to FPS) and it can sometimes have fantasy type lyrics in the case of power metal and folk metal. So there's my half-assed attempt at relating music to games.

Anyway I personally grew up listening to metal(no jokes I listened to Judas Priest when I was 5 years old) and being 15 now I still love it for it's great song writing and musical talent. For those people who say that the screaming is unecessary well screaming yes but please don't confuse that with growling. The difference is the latter takes talent and sounds good in the music, while the firsts only place is in genres that end with "core" examples: Grindcore,Deathcore,Metalcore etc. Also don't judge metal by the new bands that are coming around and calling themselves metal, or in the case of some "nu-metal". They disgust me and should be ashamed to claim to be in the same genre as great bands like Priest and Maiden.

Elitist metalhead here. Most of what I've seen people link to so far isn't what I'd call "true metal", so I'm here to fix that for all of your listening pleasure.

It may sound like a bunch of random noise to your lot, but I assure you that if you handed this song's sheet music to any mainstream band, they'd have a hell of a time covering it.
cryptopsy is actually a very mainstream metal band...
they're probably one of the most popular death metal acts around

Emo and metal don't go together very well. You want to see emo music? Check out all that AFI and Dashboard Confessionals stuff.
telling someone to check out DC and AFI for emo is like telling people to check out disturbed and slipknot for death metal.

emo, or emotional hardcore was an extremely good genre back in the 80's, back when hardcore punk was good. but now the whole genre is crap, along with emo.

They're by no means mainstream, yo. Maybe in the death metal community after turning into shit deathcore, but in the Lord Worm era, they were still pretty underground.

But if you're that picky about it (and I don't blame you for it), then Listen to this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmnL_Ti13H4] and tell me it's mainstream. Youtube really ratcheted down the recording quality, but if you get ahold of the original MP3 or FLACs, it sounds much better.

Because metal fits with the juvenile archetype of inner rage and suchlike, meanwhile people go around hating on rap, dance, pop etc for no real reason.

My usual music taste is Sorta Middle Ground Rock, Not too heavy and not too soft, usually stuff with alternative edge to it, like a bit of electro thrown in there, stuff like Muse, but for some reason when i'm gaming i much prefer Full on Electro/Dubstep, i don't know why, but it just seems to go better, nothing like some sneaky CoD4 action to some sweet Dubstep beats....

I like older metal (Judas Priest, Iron maiden) And earlier Metallica. Thats all the metal i need, and its really awesome. Death metal is not my style. the vocals and drums ruin it.

I like more rock than metal though.

And if I remember, the first level from Doom music sounds a lot like Master of Puppets.

I hate screaming as singing too. And since you are just being a prick, what you say does not even matter. The other guy who was mainly arguing with me was not being so disrespectful as you, so atleast what he said was worth responding to. I only am doing so now to point out how you are just being a jerk, and apparently according to that same guy, you also are generalizing, so tsk tsk. Now unless you understand that you are a jerk, do not bother continuing this, since I have better things to do than listen to your mean words.
I know im a jerk because the amount of times ive had similar arguments with people means certain comments are guna annoy me more than others.
Seriously tho im still trying to get the point across, rap is as much of a legitimate form of music as anything else. Its all down to what you listen to. Rap can paint a picture unlike somebody singing can. it involves looking past 70% of the absolute crap rap you hear most of the time and listening to artists who arent just talking about guns bitches and other gang related crap. I'm glad you don't like screaming but as for this other guy i fail to see how im generalizing anything, i said i don't like scremo but i dident say its all crap, did i?
