I [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7h_4T8e98Q] can [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Wiu8nWMb04] think [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVNubbPiZAU] of [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMaYCq6cQKI] quite [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nFKPVfDrgU] a [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CezOHqlXAFY] few [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NQu_NZVjUI] reasons [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfEMbK6qnvQ].

Because Metal has subgenres that produce songs like this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Er8obVq07s], this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rz815Ia_HY] and this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQ8PXXrCasE]

That is why. Of course, there are the epic, more mainsteam bands like In Flames, Metallica and so on who also kick ass, but I felt it necessary to show some of the amazing singers that metal actually has, just to help dispel the silly stereotype that heavy guitar means screaming vocals.

Metal is to gamers what pop is to general populace.

Therefore it's more relevant looking at what type of person gamers are.

The thing that bothers me the most about metal isn't really the genre (although it is really hit and miss, but so are a lot of things), but the fans. They think that their splinter faction of a niche style of music is so much better and more legitimate than any other style using the same logical arguments that xXeMoGuRlCuTsLoVeXx would use to explain why Hawthorne fucking Heights is soooo deep. No one genre is unequivocally better than another, and to think so is both ignorant and pretentious.

Which sums up how metalheads tend to come off on the internets.

And the next person who says "Rap/Rock/any music outside of Metal sucks" officially revokes their living privileges.

Edit: The best thing about this thread is that there have been a lot of nice examples of many different types of music. That's really nice.

Seriously, I read the other day that some scientists conducted some study with some people (vague, I know), and the result was that the dominant music genre amongst intelligent people is Metal, too.

I don't know about you, but I'd say the average user on this site (I don't really visit other gaming forums to be honest) is quite intelligent, so I guess it makes sense. Sort of.

I know I am, and I like metal, so hooray for science!

And that's a rap! I think I've shown what needs to be shown, and my job is done here.

Good luck ever getting anyone who sees all that to take your opinion on music seriously.
actually there's more than one person that does, i was discussing metal and punk with a friend earlier today and he fully agreed with me that punk has not evolved since the days of the 70s and early 80s

i've been listening to many genres of music for many years, i've always been the one to experiment and listen to other genres, so i kinda know a lot about the different sounds of music over the years. you might not think not but my obscenely large cd collection will disagree with you

i know many hip hop groups and electronica artists several times better than a lot of rock bands. so please dont say rap sucks.

and i disagree about punk not evolving. the emergence of hardcore punk in the late70's/early 80's lead to a load of new music genres based on punk, like powerviolence, crust, grindcore, digital hardcore, and a whole lot more. unfortunately, most of those bands have died out nowadays, except for a promising few (im looking at you iskra)

I used to be an extreme metalhead, listening to the extremely underground black metal acts.
until a few years ago when i stopped being pretentious (in terms of listening to metal at least) and realized that raw black metal is horrible, zero artistic value.

now im into mainly hardcore punk and grindcore. i find the raw energy of the music stimulating and cathartic, more so than metal. i find grindcore more intense than death metal and after a brutal moshing to it, i find myself extremely refreshed.
that and many grindcore bands have surprisingly deep lyrics.
but i still really like metal.

and on the topic of the million sub genres of metal:
i know im probably bias, but metal IS very diverse, if you make a person who has never listened or heard of rock before listen to foo fighters(alt rock) and stone temple pilots(grunge), both different bands with different styles, they would most likely say that they sound at least similar enough to be put under the same broad category.

however, if you compare a band like iron maiden(trad metal) to a band like wormphlegm(funeral doom metal), a person who has never even heard of metal before would have no idea they both fall under the same category of music. just listen to each bands songs (although i recommend listening to wormphlegm in broad daylight on the toilet since it will scare the crap out of you.)

If i can enjoy music from both wormphlegm AND the roots, i bet you guys can too. stop hating genres other than rock/metal/whatever. music is just like people, belonging to a certain group/race/genre isn't what makes you bad, it's your own actions/songwriting that do.

but hey, i didnt stop acting pretentious since instead of being "YEAH! VLAD TEPES AND LES LEGIONS NOIRES IS THE BEST METAL SINCE THEY'RE THE LEAST KNOWN" im now "i am so high class that i can listen to ALL music, unlike you guys, *snort*". but who doesn't like feeling superior to other people?

oh, and as for the thread question, it's probably because people who listen to metal can really express their passion for metal outside because it's somewhat of a taboo genre due to all the offensive metal bands with no talent that mar the reputation of the metal bands that put originality and passion into their music. so they go to the anonymity of the web to express their appreciation for the genre, and they can't be put down as easily there. that and most metalheads are atheists and most computer geeks are smart and generally the more educated you are the less likely you'll be religious so they may find some sort of uniting factor there. though... i'd like to think im smart...

OK this is my last try, if anybody in this forum is into synthesizers PLEASE CHECK THIS VIDEO OUT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1Uvv3c0ifM&feature=related This guy's using 2 MS 20's and and an SQ-10 sequencer, all created during 1978 and 1980. It's a shame that so little gamers these days are into that kind of stuff, since it's technology we're dealing with in the first place. Take Mass Effect's soundtrack for example; The Metroid games, all of them; The movie Tron (which is about video games); How about the Forest and the shadow temples in LoZ: Ocarina of Time; The Sky Temple in LoZ: Twilight Princess... These are examples from the top of my head, I'm sure there are dozens more. But I think that Synth based music did and still does play a HUGE part in video game soundtracks. I mean check out those trippy scores in Super Mario Galaxy, the ones with those little drones and bleeps, really cool stuff.

EDIT: by the way, I like that "chance" link Maggotworm posted.

...The Guitaroo man Legendary theme never struck me as metal...nor did the tiberian dawn music...ANYWAY

You see, there is a major problem with coming up with a reason for why metal dominates as the gaming populaces favorite genre of music, that problem relates to having to make a generalization. I could say it is because all metal is very fast, however, as soon as I say something to that nature I leave myself open to being debunked with an obscure band. In fact that is the problem with assigning specific traits to a genre other than its core traits. However, if you really wanted to find an answer to your question you would have to look at the one thing that all gamers share in common...games..duh. Quite a few games in the past, popular games, have used metal in their soundtracks. Even more used music that shares common traits with metal. Metal is also very popular among today's youth (well at least the youth you would find actively gaming enough to join a forum).

Really though, I would just let it go. On the bright side, there are many gamers like me who share a love for multiple types of music.

Hells yes. I must locate an mp3 of that. I wish I was a little more knowledgeable about how do extract mp3s off of youtube vids. ;_;
I'm a little busy atm but I'm sure I can find you an MP3 of it sometime soon. I know I have it on my old computer anyway.
Just a case of gettin' too it, the original song is awful.
Thank you. :) I would appriciate that.
Install "flashgot" for Firefox.. when that's installed there will be a little icon at the bottom right of yer firefox window that'll let you download more or less any FLV (flash video) file you're watching online. That done, google and download "SUPER" - a video encoder/decoder. Wehn you do that, you can open the FLV in SUPER and extract the MP3. There is probably an easier process, but hey.
Thanks for the heads up! I feel kinda silly actually. I should have been able to figure that out. I have Firefox (download helper), and SUPER. :)

I'm more into parody and songs that are not serious in the slightest and have no real message at all (see : "Jizz in my pants") but IMO most of us nerds are either whiney emo wankers or jumpy humorous sarcastic pricks which, in my opinion, would explain a lot of our music choices. I'm with the sarcastic trolling bastards group by the way.

Emo and metal don't go together very well. You want to see emo music? Check out all that AFI and Dashboard Confessionals stuff. Once you're done vomiting, you can feast your ears on some metal. May I suggest Iron Maiden? Can't think of any metalhead that wouldn't recommend those guys. They kick ass.

I would have to say that Metal and gaming are so closely related because the music in early video games features the same style that is prevalent in Metal.

Most metal takes musical cues from classical music. Video game music does the same thing. The composers of video game music wanted to convey epic music with a modern edge, which bred melodies and rhythms associated with Metal. Think of music from Mega Man, Contra, Final Fantasy, etc. They all have a lot in common with Metal (stylistically).

That and like others have said, Metal tends to have a lot of fantasy/violent imagery, which video games also feature a lot of.

We like it for multiple reasons.

A) Metal is the least mainstream genre on the market right now, and most likely a lot of metal fans are enjoying the whole " outcast of society" deal they got going. And generally nerds/gamers/geeks or whatever you call yourself generally enjoy having different tastes than the average joe. So those both coincided quite well, so nerds like metal.

B) Metal gets the adrenaline pumping. Most people would get motivated by hearing loud, intense music blasting around them as the frag the nearest noob( personally I prefer jazz on my killing sprees) It's easily the most intense form of music today, so it just motivates them.

C) It's fucking metal *****. Get used to it or get the fuck out.

P.S I'm not a huge fan of metal, I just like how that last line sounded in my head.

Elitist metalhead here. Most of what I've seen people link to so far isn't what I'd call "true metal", so I'm here to fix that for all of your listening pleasure.

Click me and be dazzled! [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1FivvPQIUY]

It may sound like a bunch of random noise to your lot, but I assure you that if you handed this song's sheet music to any mainstream band, they'd have a hell of a time covering it.

I think metal is good gamer music because it sounds violent...so unless your playing Pokemon (no offence meant) its good music to have on while your killing virtual people :)
Ever played through the part of HL2:Ep2 when your driving the car while listening to Ramble On?
Half Life 2 episode 2 yes I have I honestly didn't notice the music playing. However I'm not sure what your getting at so assuming you mean its not very metal. Metal music isn't the only good music to have on but it isn't the only style of music that does but it is the most popular.
