I've been listening to Tangerine Dream's Purgatorio as I'm posting on this thread, so I am definitely biased. TD, along with Vangelis and Klaus Schulze, are where true electronica has been, and will, almost assuredly, will always be. It's a Golden Age that can't be repeated.
if you really want to hear where electronic music is then you'll have to go to where it all started and that's the industrial genre
you have bands such as Front 242, VNV Nation, Haujobb, Icon of Coil/Panzer AG/Combichrist. :Wumpscut:, Covenant and many others.
Front 242 is a band that was so far ahead of the curve i could play a song of their's from 20 years ago and people would say "wow that sounds like it's new and is amazing"
sorry but most electronica isn't very good, there is a good reason why a lot of EBM, industrial and the sub-genres are called intelligent dance music
