Why is "My Little Pony" so popular?

I swear, one of these threads pops up every three days around here.
Anyway, it's popular because it's a legitimately great show that caught the attention of /co/ and /b/ and became a meme through a bizarre series of circumstances.
Now it has transcended meme status and become a sub-culture.
The end.

Seriously. USE. THE. SEARCH. BAR.

OT: The show is funny, has great animation, and strong characterization. That's why I like it and that's why it's so popular. That and the creator of the show has quite a good resume when it comes to the shows she's worked on.
Quite. This is why I don't get into forums. Either I don't have an opnion or I share the opnion as everyone else.

It's a good show, strong characterization, and the brony community sends me gold bricks covered in chocolate everyday.

I honestly don't know. I've never seen any MLP shows in my life.
Well if you want to know why it's popular, why don't go see the show? The one everyone's obsessed with is the newest recreation, Friendship is Magic. It's by far the best western cartoon I've seen in over a decade. Go watch it. I can't guarantee you'll like it, but I can say that if you watch it and don't like it, that's a better reason to be asking this question than if you've never seen it in the first place.

I'm totally not sure if it's all a joke and people put a MLP avatar (usually a .gif) just for laughs. If it is a joke I don't get it. Maybe it's not a joke, maybe people like the show. If you do like the show, what's so amazing about it? Please educate me.
It's not a joke. People like things, and when people like things a lot they like to set their avatars to those things, that's all. I like this show because the characters, the music, the humor, the animation, and the plot are all much better than the same in any cartoon I've seen in the last eleven or twelve years or so, and considering the alternative seems to be sitcoms or reality shows I can safely say that this is the best thing on TV, in my opinion.

Oh, and what's a 'brony'?
A brony is a fan of the show. Like, someone who's actually a fan, and appreciates it for its humor and characters and music and plot. So little girls who watch it solely because it's a little girl show aren't bronys.

Well, sorry to burst your bubble but it's not a fad. We legitimately like the show.

Wait, what? MLP is a slice of life, it has no plot .-.

Look, if you guys want to like this show, fine. It's your time and money. But I will never understand why all the obsessive culture around it.
And again with the obsessive. Obsessive is over doing something, Bronies or Pony fans are not obsessive, they just love it. Obsessive would be making a giant wooden replica of the mythical town or something.
Its like saying going to the Renessiance fair or working there means your obsessed with the mid-evil era. Pony sprays aren't obsessive, neither is any of the fanbase always talking about it, unless provoked from within their own group. World of Warcraft people who play it every single minute for years on end are obsessive, or people who put movies before school are obsessive, etc and so on. Obsessive ain't the word to describe the show, or fans, just that they love it.

I bet that more than half the people who say they like it, have never actually seen it. They just say they like it because they think it's a cool thing to say. It's not. It's a cartoon about ponies. There's nothing cool or interesting about it and they all know it.
How about this, its bloody good, thats a opinion, thus everything you just said is just your opinion. A lot of people like it, and almost 90% of people who say they hate it probably never gave it a chance, and only saw one clip or so before wanting to rip the heads of the fans off like a tiger.
There are some serious shit in there *if you are one for noticing small details* then you can tell what I mean.
People who say they like, probably already gave it a chance, and already just like it. I think the hate is one sided just on the brand, really. My Little Ponies was a girl toy for little girls, but when the Fosters lady picked it up, she had to keep within the brand, but added what made Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends great, cutesy humor, and deep down some real thought provoking stuff.
Alright, if you can, google the last movie of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, to give context, watch a couple of episodes, preferably the first followed by 3 random ones. Now, watch the movie..... Yeah, those movies had some heavy shit in there that made the child in me cry like a *****. The Season Ending one are the best for my point.
The movie I recall heavily was one of the Ending of Season ones, key premise, Mac and Bloo get seperated, Mac goes through a certain depression, Bloo almost gets adopted, but nothing sticks. The underlining plot was all about growing up. And that is what I mean, its not bad because it has cutesy humor, its just aiming towards certain types of people.

Sorry if I was mean in ANY respect, its just that I'm tired, and bloody sick of 'this thread' constantly appearing, so I just decided to let all my thoughts out on the subject.

I bet that more than half the people who say this about it, have never actually seen it. They just say they don't like it because they think there's no possible way it can actually be good. But it is. Doesn't matter if it's a cartoon about ponies. Any show can be made cool or interesting if written properly and they just don't understand that.

I legitimately like the show. Why? Because it's a good show. THe animation is good, the writing is good, and the ponies are so cute!

It's just like liking any other show.

Why do people like it? Watch a few episodes (like "Sonic Rainboom," "A Dog and Pony Show," or "Bridal Gossip"). You'll either understand, or not. No explanation anyone could give is going to provide you with some kind of mystical enlightenment that'll make it all clear for you.

Watching it is how I learned why people like it, and it's how I came to like it.

EDIT: MLP also covers some pretty heavy subject matter in a way the children can understand. (Like religion and the Native American land abduction.)
Don't forget the "finally getting your period" episodes

Damn the cutey mark crusaders!
You mean growing up and figuring out what you finally want to do with your life? Because that and a period are two very different things I think you should know...
Yes, they get their cutey marks when they figure out the special thing they're good at, but that's just the most obvious interpretation.

Look at episode 112 "Call of the Cutey." Apple Blossom is stressing over being the last one in her class to get her cutey mark. Her big sister, Apple Jack, tells her that she'll get one when she's ready, and that she was the last pony in her class to get a cutey mark too.

Then there's the popular girls, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon, who already have their cutey marks and are flaunting it in front of everyone, and teasing Apple Blossom because she hasn't got hers yet. They're developing faster than everyone else and they're making a big deal out of it because they believe it makes them superior to all the ponies who, in their eyes, aren't as physically mature

It's true that the obvious overtone is that Apple Blossom is trying to find her special talent, but the entire episode is a metaphor for puberty, and how girls develop at different rates with the cutey mark itself representing your first period.

uh ... yeah ... it totally has a plot. There are definitely events in a story, with obstacles the characters must overcome, culminating in a climax and then a resolution, where the characters learn something and develop from it. It's just, this cycle occurs per-episode, generally. But there are a few season-long arcs, such as the CMC subplot or getting ready for the Gala. There is most definitely plot in FiM.

Because americans have to popularize something that takes their mind off the fact they, and their country is pretty much screwed.
Hence why americans popularize red carpets and rich people making them famous because Americans have too much time on their hands and cannot face the reality the country went to S***. So we have grown up males actually enjoying a cartoon catered to young females.

A Google search would easily replace this thread. "Why is MLP so popular?" "I've never seen it." Then watch an episode and see what all the fuss is about instead of making the millionth thread on this same subject.

Brony is the term that makes it okay to enjoy MLP.
I am amazed at the amount of people that get the term brony wrong, it is /b/rony as in a person from 4chan's /b/ that likes ponies.
Just because the slew of the internet was like zomg bronies sounds like bros who like ponies doesn't suddenly change the meaning of the word; it just means people are dense to what they are calling themselves.
Wrong.

Words change over time. What started as /b/rony, became brony.

Its no different than the word gay changing from happy to homosexual to something stupid. It just happened faster.
