Gee I don't know. Why is Dr. Who popular? Why is Dexter popular? Why is pizza popular? Because a lot of people like it. Simple answer.
Ddescus was what!?

I like it because its a good show. Simple as that. It is funny and has good characterization, animation, and voice acting. And I didn't change my avatar for giggles. I changed it because Fluttershy is adorable.

I bet that more than half the people who say they like it, have never actually seen it. They just say they like it because they think it's a cool thing to say. It's not. It's a cartoon about ponies. There's nothing cool or interesting about it and they all know it.
I watched the show, and I liked it.
I guess that makes me...
Superior to them?

MLP has become a meme of sort.

More or less It's just the way the crew/cast made it. while maintaining a "girl" show persona, it makes a lot of refrences that internet/geek culture and adult audiences can appreciate. The crew is basically allowed to do whatever the hell they want as long as it stays G, and usually hub/hasbro has only asked little things like "can you put this umbrella in this episode so we can sell it" or "can you change applejack ramming her head into trees to applejack ramming her hooves into trees? We don't want idiot kids trying that..."

Also, it's made in flash.

Honestly, its a pretty good series for all ages and is good-natured. Almost a bit of nostalga here and there. I'd suggest watching the first 4 episodes of friendship is magic and if you don't like it, it isn't for you.

Though I have to say, while I'm only on the "its a good show" spectrum show-wise, I really like a lot of the fanfics written.

The result is My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, a well-animated, well-acted, well-written, funny, creative, friggin' adorable, and just awesome show.
I beg your pardon, "well-animated"?

From what I've seen of it, the quality of it's animation actually has LESS quality to it than previous iterations of My Little Pony television series'.

This recent one has this ugly "random shit at Cartoon Network"-quality to it (kind of like The Powerpuff Girls or Dexters Laboratory).

Im not going to argue the other points, but "Well-animated" it is NOT!

Its for hipsters, don't bother.
When everyone's a hipster, no one will be.

But anywho, it's because the show is enjoyable. Bam. Simple as that.

When it comes to trolling, MLP is like a Combi-Flamer to the dry brush that is the internet.

Plus, Princess Celestia has the most beautiful mane <3

Because it's well written and just enjoyable, and all the other reasons people like shows. Or anything, really.

I think I can help with that. See, My Little Pony is really just this generations way of rebelling. We don't have the poignant social issues of the 60's or the sexual revolution taking place between then and about the 90's and people are looking for ways to rebel. By denying classic societal regulations about what 20 year old males like we have rebelled by not conforming to the societal norm, and thus placing us outside the common ideas and creating a 20XX counter-culture.

And it's pretty fucking cute, so that's something.

Actually, the animation is one of the more often-complimented parts of the show. I'm far from the only one. The only reason it has that look it because it's flash-animated, but if you take a look at it in action, you see that it's incredibly well-done flash animation. The movement especially is fluid and detailed. It's good stuff, and say what you will, but I am far from the only person who disagrees. Heck, even when people see the show and somehow manage not to like it, their comment goes something like, "The animation's pretty good, but..."

I saw a few episodes in the summer. Loved it. I am now classifed as "Brony". It's cute and has some good jokes. The characters are interesting, too.

There really is not much else to it.

Sorry, bro.

EDIT: MLP also covers some pretty heavy subject matter in a way the children can understand. (Like religion and the Native American land abduction.)

Because it reminds them of their childhood.

Because it is both relatively easy relate to and be comfortable with but at the same time be some sort of moronic declaration of individuality based around something they perceive as (very barely) taboo "I like ponies so therefore everybody else can just suck it" or "I told my girlfriend I liked MLP, are you proud of me?" while nobody else cares even slightly.

MovieBob's Junk Drawer: Reloaded quickly references the fact that because it's so popular, it'll lead to every "for-girl" franchise that's out of date (Gem, Strawberry Shortcake) being rebooted, animated in flash, and filled with jokes geared toward 20 somethings that like internet humor (ie: do a barrel roll). Some have said it's just an internet fad (and they are partially correct, the second best kind of correct), while others maintain it's actually a good show. It's not. It's fuckin' terrible. And I wouldn't change it because that's what makes it entertaining. It's like watching Day of The Triffids. If you don't like watching terrible movies, then don't try to get into MLP. If you do however, then join the herd.

It's like the "furry complex" but at least these people have the decency not to make crotchless fursuits and write incredibly awkward stories about it.
Unfortunately, they do write incredibly awkward stories. Google "Clopfic". You'll see.

Oh yay, this fad again.

Honestly, the show looks ok. I just wish everyone would stop bringing it up so much though. Now most non-believers either hate it with a passion or are have been driven to apathy by the near constant barrage of pony pics/threads.

I feel as though people can like what they like if they do it quietly. You don't see me posting about Homestuck or Scrubs on a regular basis. ^_^

Because people like it. That is all. Trying to understand the internet is like having a staring contest with cthulu. Nothing good will come out of it and you may end up Knee deep in tentacles.
That happens regardless, the internet's full of tentacles.

And as for the MLP's popularity, is because it's widely liked, as the fine gent I quoted said.
It's pretty good as far as children's cartoons go, especially cartoons for girls, especially cheap merchandise driven shlock like My Little Pony.
And as good as it is considering all of the above, well it's frickin' unprecedented.

I honestly don't know. I've never seen any MLP shows in my life. Am I missing a 'must see'? Constantly I see people's avatar as something to do with MLP than anything else, don't get me wrong, I have nothing against it.

I'm totally not sure if it's all a joke and people put a MLP avatar (usually a .gif) just for laughs. If it is a joke I don't get it. Maybe it's not a joke, maybe people like the show. If you do like the show, what's so amazing about it? Please educate me.

Oh, and what's a 'brony'?
A mere few months ago, I was in your shoes wondering why the hell a franchise for little girls was suddenly getting so popular. Then I got curious and watched an episode of Friendship is Magic. I wasn't too impressed. But then I watched another. And another. And another. And now, I'm this guy:

Basically, the show is funny, charming, and in some ways reminds me of shows that are long gone, like Looney Tunes and Animaniacs. (Not that it's a 'zany' cartoon, but the humor and songs can be enjoyed by children and adults alike)
