People like it because it was clever new funny imaginative and innovative with truly challenging puzzles and how could you have taken 4hr.s its a 2-3 hour game no offense but you must fail pretty hard to make it 4

To answer the OP you must understand that in general there is very little originality when it comes to humanity. We mostly retread and modify the same things over and over again. Thus when someone does something truely original that is really good, it stands out and gets lauded with praise. From which point you see those concepts imitated, tweaked, and modified along with everything else for years until someone stumbles upon another innovation.
Or at least that's generally how it works. It can be argued that Portal was not new, I was reading some article about an obscure game that actually inspired it. In this case however the concept was new to the mainstream.
It's sort of like trying to explain the success of Tetris. Was what ever the big deal? Well when that game first came out it was totally unique and revolutionary compared to other video games in circulation at the time. Now it's trite, overdone, and boring. People actually mock it to an extent, and/or work it into other things in wierd ways... we all also actually play it once in a while. It's simply so established that we forget when it was shiny and new.
With enough time, you'll see the basic ideas of "Portal" and the mechanics used in a bunch of places, tweaked, modified, and beaten to death (it's already happening to some extent). In 20 years from now you'll think of it like Tetris, and if your kids or grandkids fire up the original Portal one day they will go go "wow, this is bland and stereotypical. Everyone does stuff like this" totally forgetting that it is where it all started.

it was a very simple game mechanic that made for an excellent and innovative puzzle game with a FPS feel. I know it was one of the first games in a long time that really engaged my mind to think of different solutions for a given problem.
Because it was different, innovative, funny, pretty and well, in a box set with Half-life 2 and Team Fortress 2!

I don't think it was the best game ever...but it was pretty decent, yeah.

The game featured an innovative mechanism that we have yet to be seen in any other game. It also had very interesting characters, or a interesting character, that was very well developed, even though we almost only got to hear her over the speakers in the facility. It has an interesting story, a game-play that works very well, even though the game itself might not be interesting to everyone, as it is a puzzle game that is kinda disguised as an fps.
