Because yahtzee likes it
... I don't know about you, but I (and most other people) don't base my level of entertainment off of what other people think. Portal is a first person puzzle shooter, which is a pretty unique concept. And it's well-executed at that, with some great humour sprinkled into the levels here and there. It was an original, well thought-out experience and it stopped before it got old. That's why it's good, at least according to me.

But hey, if you find enjoyment in copycating other people, that's fine. Good luck with that.

I suppose next you're going to ask what is the big deal with Citizen Kane, Shakespeare's plays or Casablanca?
Please, tell me how Portal compares to Shakespeare?

It´s just a game not mankind´s greatest achievement.
Then that's an excellent basis for comparison right there! Because neither is Shakespeare.

*Sigh* it's always the low post count (ironic I know) morons who are unable to spell who make these threads.

Let me guess, your favourite game ever is COD4/Halo 3 and you only buy FPS games with multiplayer?
You found Bioshock, Half Life 2 and anything that requires more thought than killing something every 0.5 seconds boring?

Its all a test of mentalness and a test of the how-much-you-can-spin-without-puking engine in your head engine. ... The cake is a lieeeeeee.

Also a puzzle game.

Because it's one of the games that are (Or atleast so I think) flawless. (It still can be improved graphic and sound wise)

Not in my top 5 or 10 but still great.

Because the writing was perfect.
The story was mysterious and brilliant.
It had great graphic design.
Puzzles were fun and fast.

And... it had THAT theme song.
YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.

dont give me that, I never claimed you did not have the right to state your opinion rather just dont be such a godamned jackass about it. And not being the judge are you kidding me? You discredit yourself within the very samne godamned post what possible relevance could the transformers comment have if you were not judging the merit and value to his opinion?

Shakespear quoted often? Not sure what social cycles or internet holes you lurk around but most certinaly not the same as I, and I'm very much so allowed to use personal dislikes to discredit something maybe it is not a tastefull tactic but neither is calling out someones merit based on tastes in an irrelevant movie :)

Now who's setting up strawmen, Im not talking about the orange box im talking about Portal, Portal could come selotaped to Planescape (my favorite game) for all I give a shit if its 2-3 hours I'm going to call it out for being two to three bloody hours.

Yes I played it through it was an absolute bore The physics seemed gimmicky to me considering how such large portions of the game could go by without me requiring them, the start was engaging to a degree after that I got tired of wandering around a dull feeling city, sewers, subways, caves ohhh original. Again my opinion maybe conflicting but no less valuable than yours.

Now TF2 does have a gimmick not an original one at that either its an fps mmo pretty much anyone who has played any form of competative pvp in a mmo can spot the same traits class system, equipment, stat modifiers, if your fps has a theorycraft following its not balanced.

Unless you can support that "consensus" with actual figures from these forums, a general portion of the gaming population its opinion and stays as such.
If you paid attention in English class and could recognise a Shakespeare quote when you heard it then you'd notice them all over the damn place. Star Trek is so full of them people have called it "Shakespeare's Cliff Notes in Space".
And you seriously don't get it if you think those "the cake is a lie" memes are supposed to be funny... they AREN'T SUPPOSED to be funny. It is a reference, a nod, a contextual reminder of a shared experience why those memes are so popular. An experience you seem incapable of experiencing without trying to figure out what the gimmick is or seemingly completely missing the point. Have you even played Portal all the way through?

Also, I made no straw man arguments, you lumped Portal in with all other Valve games as:

"slow, shallow and ultimatley (sic) relying on one gimmick to pull them through"

so it is completely reasonable for me to respond to what is obviously such an unreasonable statement about Valve games. So I talk about Valve games. No Straw man argument there, completely relevant to the issue at hand which seems to be your irrational criticism of Valve games and Portal in particular.

I mean if you said you just don't like FPS games or shooters in general (you did say one of your favourite games was Planescape, a Dungeons and Dragons variant, about as RPG as you can get) or you just don't have the imagination for the physics* then I'd accept that, just like some people don't like The Beatles. Maybe it's just not your thing?
But there is no way you can call Valve games "Shallow", "Slow" or gimmicky. There is just no basis for it. Just like no matter how much you dislike The Beatles you just cannot call them a crap band who just made crap music.
(to clarify I am NOT implying you said that nor that you hate The Beatles, however I am saying you are as bad as a Beatle hater with your Valve hate)

Also, how in the hell can you call Team Fortress 2 an MMO? A Massively Multiplayer Online game?

THE MAXIMUM PLAYER LIMIT IS 16 per side! How is that "massive"?

No PvP MMO can hold a candle to TF2 and you damn well know it. Some specific examples may be the closEST comparison but that doesn't make them close in any significant way. Lol at you complaining about the theorycraft following of the game... I thought you said Valve games were "Shallow"? And in my EXPERIENCED opinion no amount of theory unbalances the game to spite how much you would like to claim from your comparatively AMATEUR opinion.

*(why in the world you think to only use the physics for few specific puzzles, I have no idea)

You want to know the consensus? May I first ask: do you like apples?

http://orange.half-life2.com/Awards.html

How do you like them apples.

_____

So many awards... I lost count

Need I remind you that these awards were mostly achieved in 2007, going up against COD4, Bioshock, Halo 3, Rock Band, Mass Effect and Crysis, so don't call it a slow year.

I was never sure. It never grabbed me, and the humour wasn't all that.

But that's just me, so I share your views OP.

Because it was fun.

Does anybody even remember that aspect of video games before they were swallowed by an ocean of graphics, plots/stories, feeling like a second job and being the same shit you see everywhere else?

Portal and TF2 were absolutely bananas popular from the word go because they weren't chugged full of that bullshit every other current game has that vacuums the fun right out of it to make it more like an interactive movie.

Fun, unique, didn't overstay it's welcome, genuinely funny lines and peerless puzzles.

It ticked all the boxes for a memorable game.

Basically, because it was as close as a game has ever come to being flawless.

-It was a Creative, Original, and Completely Unique Idea
-It's writing was hilarious and at the same time actually told a deep story
-The puzzles were amazing, yet not too challenging that you could get stuck
-It's storyline tied in to another game which many also consider one of the best games ever
-It was cheaply priced on PC, and on consoles came with 3 other games, all of which were great
-Its length was perfect, it never overstayed its welcome and wasn't too short to be satisfying
-It ended with one of the funniest and catchiest songs ever made in a game
-Its a FPS by Valve, they don't do bad FPS.

This is basically why. Its one flaw? It created the phrase "The Cake is a Lie" which people will be repeating for the rest of history, and it will only get less and less funny.

It was intelligent. It was at times challenging. Most of all, however, it was different.

It wasn't another sci-fi space marine shooting. It was creative and original. It was a breath of fresh air in a stale gaming community.

Its a very good game, I liked it alot, the insanely fun puzzles were brilliant to figure out.

It was taxing but not hard if you see what I mean, and I play my games with the sound all the way up to 11, so another reward of playing the game was having to listen to GLaDOS and her witticism's.

But if you don't like the game don't beat yourself up about it, hell don't bother making a thread about it either, just get on with your life.

Although if you didn't like Portal and you never made this thread then how am I posting in it?

OH MY GOD!, we've created a paradoxical situation and we can't get out of it! FUCK

as an aside I'm pretty sure this would be a Pogo Paradox.
no, you have created a paradoxical situation. i never heard of the Pogo Paradox, but what you did is more like the Grandfather Paradox.

This. Although I wouldn't say perfect, it's one of the games in my list of gems, along with LittleBigPlanet, the Ratchet and Clank series, Half-Life 2 and all it's bastard children, Unreal Series, Team Fortress 2, and Wolfenstein 3d
