Why is PSP generally disliked while DS does so well?

The following is very long winded. I understand if you skip it. Everything below is my opinion. I do not present them as anything but my opinions. Take it or leave it.

There both kinda crappy, and yes i own both.

The games i have on my PsP that i enjoy are either remakes: Valkyrie Profile, Megaman, Old school arcade packs, Persona.

Or sequels of continuing series: Killzone, Crisis core, Dissidia, and soon KH.

My DS? The only games i ended up liking were Pokemon(Heart Gold, i hate the new iterations to the series) and kingdom hearts. There were other games i thought were okay but they were just spinoffs or remakes i later traded in for console games.

The DS DOES have an avalanche of games but most of them are hollow games and simple puzzle games. I don't feel like are worth the twenty bucks they charge for a flash game.

I'm not a huge fan of handhelds to begin with though but I am willing to admit i bought both simply for the Kingdom Hearts games coming out for them both(I'm weak and love that series).

Honestly having a small library like the PsP isn't any worse then having an avalanche of crappy games like the DS.

Does the PsP have a lot of Original games? No.
Does the DS have a lot of Original games? No. Yes yes i realize, SHOCK. Go check out your eb or future shop of wherever you buy your games. The majority of the games you find are just rehashes of other games. I counted sixteen different "pet" games my last trip to HMV. I count every "pet" game the same. Doesn't matter if its a pet hospital or pet training or Nintenpet its a game where you watch a freaking pet. Same with brainage and all its look alikes.

My EB has a wall JUST for Pet and brain games. With one shelf with a small rabble of other games. Most of which are point and clicks.

What am i going on about? Oh, right. Both sides are stupid. The PsP is flashy and sony clearly doesn't give a shit about the people who bought it way back when what with this PsP Go bullshit. Great Sony, fix all the bugs of the original but don't bother with giving us some way to recover all the games we already bought. KH will likely be the last game i buy for it.

The DS. Dear god the DS. So much hype. Well what do i have to gripe about it? Lets start with its flagship feature the touch screen. Nothing better then getting a cramp in my wrist because i wanted to play starfox. Most games i played that required the touch screen to play are the ones i returned either out of bordem or because i felt stabbing my touch screen for it to react half the time was unhealthy for it. The only games i ended up enjoying were the ones that ignored the touch screen feature or had it as an option. Pokemon had the right idea, use it as a convenience not a necessity. Now to cut off its other testicle lets go after the DS library. Yes i realize there are original games but a game is only original the first time. Like i already stated i don't count the millions of variations of PET or LEARN as new games when its fundamentally the same, damn, game. As well a lot of its actually neat and interesting games i ultimately felt were damaged by being forced(key word is FORCED) to use the god damn stylus.

Now, i realize i bag on the DS a lot. I realize it looks like i am more for the PsP. That couldn't be further from the truth. The thing is the PsP is like an empty box. What am i supposed to say about it? Should i make bring up its corrigatedness? How about i insult how brown it is, or the little up arrows on the side. Its a cardboard box. Big, sturdy, but hollow. Just like the PsP. I bag on the DS because i WANTED to like it SO FUCKING BAD. Ultimately i greatly despise its whoring of touch screen play. I feel not giving me the choice is bad.

The DS is that same box, but with wings glued haphazardly to the side. You just know there is a way to use that box well but people keep cocking it up and forcing you to use the wings when carrying it would be acceptable. Woooo yayyy its innovative! That's great now let me use the fucking D-Pad. Having to control Link with the Stylus the whole game irritated me to death. Mostly when i didn't draw half circles or whole circles well enough for his majesty link to do his fucking sword swipe and get cock slapped by a weak little mob.

In short both systems are riddled with flaws. The PsP could be great if Sony actually gave a shit about it and got some more unique and interesting games for it as well as advertise the thing in a non retarded way. The DS could be awesome if every time there was a good game for it they didn't force me to stab my DS like it was the man who raped and murdered my dog.

Wow.... Sorry... had a lot of hate in me... Good thing i got it out huh?

I have owned both. Bought a DS at launch, sold it later and bought a PSP. I have since sold that PSP as well.

The PSP is just hard as hell to control, with the little control nub "stick". It hurts thumbs. Also, the games suck. Hard. The ones that don't are so simple that they don't warrant anything above a $10 price tag (loco roco, etc).

The DS... I also couldn't justify paying so much for a portable game. I mean, it's not something I'll sit down and play for long hours. It's a diversion. I'd love to play handheld games but it's too expensive for me. Also, some games are unusable on the move, due to relying on the touch pad and/or microphone, which defeats the purpose of a handheld system.

I Own a "Phat" PSP and love it my other half has a DSLite, To be fair the DSLite isn't bad but I don't like the D-Pad on it and the bottom corners tend to dig into my hands after a while.

Also I was even more turned off the machine with the obscene amount of Disney and other such "Cute" games, Which seems to pop up more than any game I would actually want. Now ive not kept much of an eye on the game line up but the last few games I played and liked on the DS was Mario Kart DS, Metriod and Resident Evil DS.

So I Chose to get a PSP, Now yea it has its drawbacks but I do on the whole prefer It, Sure some of the games are PS2 ports or similar but the selection was more for me. I also like many Did put a CFW on my PSP so I could back up my PSX games and Use them on the go (Dont worry I Legally own them) or my Gameboy Advance / Color Collection without having to carry another handheld. That aside I do enjoy a good fight on Tekken or a Race on Ridge Racer on it and what nots the controls feel nice to me too and I like the weight of the unit on the whole, I Did also modify mine xD

Another Reason is I LOVE PLAYJOY!

(Yea It was audio Recorded on a mic and a little off sync and the window borders are there ive since then got Fraps and the 3.5mm to 3.5mm So I can record correctly.)

Bottomline: I Like the DS but the DSLite's D-Pad to me was Horrid, there are some good titles but so much Hello Kitty and Disney that around where I live it Drowns out any titles I would want. PSP Allows me to carry my 2 other handhelds and Use my psx titles on the go, Then again although the titles are more for me there is a fair few Mediocre ones. The ability to be able to record my games or play my games even on a psp-1000 onto my PC monitor is a big plus though

There just aren't any games I really want on the PSP. And of the one's I would buy, most of them are ports of a console game, got poor reviews, or just aren't anything I absolutely feel is essential. And the movies are rip-offs. Why should I buy a movie I already own just so I can watch it on a PSP, especially since my iPod does the same thing without the re-purchasing. Also, the thumb stick is horrible. How am I supposed to be able to control a game when my thumb is bigger then the stick?

DS on the other hand has a unique concept that works very well, and an absolutely spectacular selection of games that has made it one of my favorite gaming systems ever. The PSP has/had potential, but for me the winner is the DS by a long shot.

Playstation caters to the "hardcore" crowd that needs to be at home to get their gaming done. DS games are very casual and a very large percentage of the portable crowd are casual gamers. There was a point in the 1990s when damn near every UAL attendant brought a Gameboy on duty. It wouldn't surprise me if nothing has changed 15 years later.

Because a PSP is just that, a portable playstation, a trimmed down portable playstation with unneeded features like video.

At least the DS actually did something that was half new and interesting.

I have both, and I prefer the DS. Frankly, the DS just has more original games on it (Phoenix Wright, The World Ends With You, Elite Beat Agents, etc.) than the PSP, and they're just more fun. The PSP has its highlights, but overall the DS just has better support on the part of developers. It's easier to make games for the DS because of the decreased graphical expectations, so game creators can focus on fun over flair.

Unfortunately, that same philosophy doesn't exactly apply to the Wii...

For me it always comes down to the games available. If a console has enough games I want, then I'll want that console. Which is why I own a 360, DS and a Wii. And this is also why I will probably never own a PS3 or a PSP.

Before the two came out, i remember everyones predictions would be that the PSP would rape the DS.

The DS is the only system to offer pokemon games, this means its going to sell. I know people that buy a DS just for pokemon.

Also, allot of the games on the PSP are like watered down versions of the games on the PS3. While the DS offers more exclusive games, I.E the Pokemon games i mentioned.

Im not a fan of handheld gaming personally, but thats my guess.

I really hate people saying that the PSP lacks games. It's got plenty of great, solid titles of every genre just like the DS. The only reason the latter gives the impression of an extensive library is all the shovelware and some ten iterations of the same Pokemon game (not bashing the Pokemon series, I just think they should change things up a little).

When you're looking at quality games I'd say both the DS and the PSP are great gaming platforms, it's all about preference.

It's due to the DS having the most "casual appeal". I love how some people say it's because of the PSP having lots of shovelware when the DS is shovelware central. I've never seen more clones of Wii games in my life.

It could also be due to the fact that the PSP only has one thumbstick. The lack of a second one means that shooter games don't work very well.

Probably because while the PSP is by no means a bad system (at least from what I've seen), it is pretty looked upon as a sort of half-way between PS2 and PS3 while the DS is applauded for doing something that hadn't really been done that well before, i.e. a touchscreen as a major part of gameplay.

Personally I can't stand handheld, but I'd consider a DS before a PSP.

Why?

Having owned both, I got a lot more enjoyment out of the DS, despite hating all the games on both consoles. The touch screen gimmick takes longer than one might think to wear off, unlike the Wii remote gimmick. Plus, a lot of parents see the DS in the same way they do the Wii - an automatic child shutter-upper (I know my sister, her husband and her friends see it this way).

The young adults who buy the DS do so for the same reason they buy Apple Macs - they wish to feel trendy.

EDIT: I lost my train of thought multiple times there. It's 6:30am.

Game choice and functionality, mainly. The PSP has a dearth of playable games, while the DS has quite a few titles that are worth picking up, since they aren't on any other systems. There are a few functions the PSP has that would make it useful, but since most of those are video player functions, one has to expend more money to actually use those functions.

WHY DOES THE PSP FAIL WHEN COMPARED TO THE SUCCESS OF THE DS?

The PSP simulates the game consoles too well. I remember when it first came out, it looked like a portable, dumbed-down version of the PS2. Many people just decided that quality is more important than portability. Playing the console games on the home console, which featured better control and better overall quality was more attractive than playing a portable less impressive version of the same game.

So in all the PSP tried too hard to be a portable console system. The PSP was beaten by the fact that its content felt like a cheapened portable version of the home console games. Given the choice of portability vs quality people opted for the higher quality console games.

Now the DS is a completely separate experience from heavy duty console gaming. Nobody looks at a pokemon game and thinks *lemme just get the better quality version on my home console*. There is no better quality version of pokemon on a more powerful system. If you want the true pokemon experience you need to get the hand-held.

The DS has original features that make the gaming experience feel different from console gaming.Nobody calls the DS a mini Wii in the same way the PSP feels like a mini PS2. Additionally Nintendo was smart in keeping the most attractive portable games as hand-held exclusives ( for the most part anyway )
