Why is PSP generally disliked while DS does so well?

I picked up a PSP because I wanted to use it as a portable emulation station and I heard rumor that it was going to be able to play PS1 games. I always pegged the PSP hate on jealousy, as the PSP cost an arm and a leg and got some great exclusives like Final Fantasy & Metal Gear, Dynasty Warriors, Guilty Gear, Grand Theft Auto, which always breeds resentment.

I have to admit that the game selection is a bit shit, but the games that are good are really really really good, but those are awash in a sea of mediocrity and crap.

But to me the PSP is worth it for GTA: Liberty City Story's & Tekken alone. Let alone all the neat games like Patapon.

So in all the PSP tried too hard to be a portable console system. The PSP was beaten by the fact that its content felt like a cheapened portable version of the home console games. Given the choice of portability vs quality people opted for the higher quality console games.

Now the DS is a completely separate experience from heavy duty console gaming. Nobody looks at a pokemon game and thinks *lemme just get the better quality version on my home console*. There is no better quality version of pokemon on a more powerful system. If you want the true pokemon experience you need to get the hand-held.
This is actually very true, and its the games that manage to equal their console versions like Tekken & GTA:LCS that really stick out on the PSP because the rest of the titles are watered down console games with cut down graphics and features.

I emphatically agree with you sir, you hit the nail on the head.

Mainly because the Psp games are spinoff pieces of shit filled trash. While most ds games are made specifically for the DS
I sorta agree with this. Regardless of this, there are a few jewels I found for the PSP such as Final Fantasy: Crisis Core and Rengouku 2.

Another Reason is I LOVE PLAYJOY!

(Yea It was audio Recorded on a mic and a little off sync and the window borders are there ive since then got Fraps and the 3.5mm to 3.5mm So I can record correctly.)
You so totally have to tell me how to get that to work! Last time I tried I could only find really dodgy links that I was afraid to try and install on my compy let alone risk bricking my PSP, and PSP-Hacks didnt have anything useful either.

BTW sorta random question for all you FF peeps out there. Which game should I pick up for on the PSP 7 or 8? I played Crisis Core and loved it and wanna try one of the retro FF games as I never owned a playstation and so I never played either.
If you've never played any, I'd ASSUME that you'd enjoy 7 more. I personally like 8 the best, but it's an acquired taste and definitely not your typical experience (no treasure boxes, player should not level up, no MP - Magic is drawn, stacked and junctionned to stats).

Seriously though, do yourself a favour and get Dissidia. It's not an RPG but its a damn good game.
second the piss out of that last part, my goodness that game had my eyeballs glued to the psp screen for days, i would wake up and be in pure rush mode "GARHHHHHHH MORE LEVELING NEEDED, BEAT JECHT!!!"

I think its because the DS has more innovation with it, and more originality. Also, the PSP discontinued its own format, and REALLY screwed themselves with the PSP Go for getting rid of the UMD drive entirely which basically turns it into an iPod Touch, sans the touch screen.

I suppose I went for a DS because it had a different flavour to it, I already was getting my high end graphics and action games from my 360, so a ds would be a good option for variety, getting a PSP would just feel redundant to me anyway.

Discontinued it's own format? What in the blazes are you talking about? The UMD is still supported, and it's will continue to be supported. I have no idea what kind of misinformed crap you have been hearing, hell unless you are talking about movies then you are just wrong. Besides, the GO didn't replace the older models, it just complimented them and targeted a demographic that isn't quite that strong.

If there is one game that could justify my purchase of a system, it's Dissidia. 500+ hours logged into it and still continues to be fun and addictive. From all that time I could have probably beaten my 50+ game library twice over at least.

Generally because Nintendo has a larger fanbase than the PSP, and also because it had WAY more games to play. Walking into Gamestop, the DS has on quick glance about three times as many games as the PSP. Along with that, a lot of the PSP games are incredibly obscure. And as mentioned above by others, the PSP suffered a bit from hardware issues, although I don't know much about the new PSP they just released.

couldn't agree more. that game alone could sell the psp to me, which is semi ridiculous, but wow, from the first second i turned that game on i was glued to it, the intro video is ridiculous and basically sums up some of the fights i have encountered, i love love love the free flow environment of all the different arena's you can play in, not to mention the different combo's you learn and use against certain opponents, that game is the perfect game to show off the psp's capabilities and i would freaking die and pay 100 dollars over if they made a console version of that game

Indeed, what first comes off to be nothing more than fan service and style over substance punches you in the face and calls you stupid for doubting it. Once you get past the FF theme you get a game that's really pretty, has an innovative and great combat system and general gameplay with content that rivals that of console games.

Even the level/skill grinding of the game was great because the game was constantly rewarding you, even the damn achievements weren't hollow and gave you shit. The progressive skill system worked so well because it teaches you the game bit by bit at such a steady pace that by the time you got a new move, you'd already be good enough with the moves you currently had making learning the game a breeze.

Oh and yes, a console version with the quality of graphics like in the opening scene would be the fucking bomb and I'd honestly buy a console for it. Add in some new modes like team/tag team and what not and...wow. Good thing is, Nomura actually expressed interest in making a sequel if the first game sold well, and well...the first game has sold well over 1mil so some time down the road we may get it. Keep everything good about the first game, add or tweak some features, include some new characters, modes, and maps and you got fighting game of the fucking decade.

yup thats exactly how i went into the game, i was thinking "ehh im a ff fan but man this looks like fan service garbage..(first glance).." *2 minutes into game* holy crappppp, need more battery power! *battery is on fire by morning* shitttt i got classss

thats what happened when i bought that game, ridiculous.

i could talk about this game all day just about, its ridiculous how well thought out and balanced it is, and it still amazes me i only had one joystick that whole time for that 3D game, and you are very right about the learning/leveing curve, it was so nice to jump into the flow and button mash at first, then you learned your characters strengths/weaknesses, and got some new moves, learned those, got some new power ups/weapons, rinse and repeat and my goodness it had me addicted like a crack addict for sure, plus all the modes, all the unlockables, shit i sat there and would just have my psp playing the ff music half the time when i wasn't playing it (dk about you but i do like a good chunk of the music from those games)

good to know they are interested and see the gold in this game, i can't waitttt for the next one then, if they bumped that up to ps3 dear god i dont think i would go to school for a week if i had that game

I don't know how the hell long ago it was, but I remember... I think it was Kaz Hirai, saying that because the UMD format was so expensive to make they were going to discontinue it. Which is why the PSP Go lacks a UMD drive. I might be having a brain fart, however.

PSP has awkard controls while DS has time-tested controls. It is pretty much the same thing as a NES controler with a screen, shoulder buttons, and... and... okay, that's it.

I think Playstation rocks. I'm not a fan of Nintendo, but Nintendo has had some sucsess among the astounding flops. Playstation hasn't had the same amount time to flop as Nintendo and will have to do more careful product testing to get a comfortable system.
