Hello everyone!
As the title of this thread asks, there has been something on my mind lately. Long ago back in 1999 I watched the Star Wars serie's first step into next generation technology. It contained everything I had come to expect of the franschise; Jedi and Sith counterparts, science-fiction action in both atmosphere and vacuum, and overall tone reminding of the unusual band of heroes having to escape and work against outnumbering odds that set up the story for the original movies.
The character composition was good and interesting. You got some in-depth look at Obi Wan's character development, and I think they did a great job with the child actors! I've noticed that it can be difficult finding young people that manages to avoid making you cover your ears and eyes at illogical behaviour and dialouge, which is why I'm impressed over that they were able to find the right ones! I was able to take Anakin seriously as a character, and was able to imagine the heart-breaking feeling of having to abandon what you hold dear to join an order that requires you to put aside the person you are. It gave an insight to how such experiences can torment you throughout your life. To me Jar-Jar Binks wasn't bad or overdone, he was the comical relief that CP30 and R2D2 previously held for the original movies and added alot of that classic Star Wars feel to it in my opinion.
The movie didn't rush itself along or became tiring. It took its time with building up the mood, and a large portion of it fleshed out the discovery of Anakin on Tatooine along with other things just to add to the setting. I enjoyed it alot, and actually watched it many times over again after it came out on VHS and DVD.
But during recent years I've started noticing that a large part, if not the majority, of the media and community around the world have taken a very bitter and negative look on the movie. Liking very few bits of it and sometimes literally demonizing Jar-Jar Binks. These negative opinions came from many critics that I've enjoyed watching over the years. I am honestly clueless over why apparently so many responded to the movie in this way. I try to look back on the movie and analyze it, but I don't see anything that breaks the immersion for me. I would have qualified it as an excellent science-fiction movie, but it would seem alot of people wouldn't agree with me.
I can understand the negative views on Episode II and III, but Episode I put itself on the same level as the original movies for me.
Anyway, this is why I am asking fellow Escapists over why Star Wars: Episode I is regarded as bad. I would appreciate to be given insight into it!
Or I guess I could wait for Moviebob and other famous critics to explain their view points on it.
