Why is Star Wars: Episode I Looked Upon With Despise?

Hello everyone!

As the title of this thread asks, there has been something on my mind lately. Long ago back in 1999 I watched the Star Wars serie's first step into next generation technology. It contained everything I had come to expect of the franschise; Jedi and Sith counterparts, science-fiction action in both atmosphere and vacuum, and overall tone reminding of the unusual band of heroes having to escape and work against outnumbering odds that set up the story for the original movies.

The character composition was good and interesting. You got some in-depth look at Obi Wan's character development, and I think they did a great job with the child actors! I've noticed that it can be difficult finding young people that manages to avoid making you cover your ears and eyes at illogical behaviour and dialouge, which is why I'm impressed over that they were able to find the right ones! I was able to take Anakin seriously as a character, and was able to imagine the heart-breaking feeling of having to abandon what you hold dear to join an order that requires you to put aside the person you are. It gave an insight to how such experiences can torment you throughout your life. To me Jar-Jar Binks wasn't bad or overdone, he was the comical relief that CP30 and R2D2 previously held for the original movies and added alot of that classic Star Wars feel to it in my opinion.

The movie didn't rush itself along or became tiring. It took its time with building up the mood, and a large portion of it fleshed out the discovery of Anakin on Tatooine along with other things just to add to the setting. I enjoyed it alot, and actually watched it many times over again after it came out on VHS and DVD.

But during recent years I've started noticing that a large part, if not the majority, of the media and community around the world have taken a very bitter and negative look on the movie. Liking very few bits of it and sometimes literally demonizing Jar-Jar Binks. These negative opinions came from many critics that I've enjoyed watching over the years. I am honestly clueless over why apparently so many responded to the movie in this way. I try to look back on the movie and analyze it, but I don't see anything that breaks the immersion for me. I would have qualified it as an excellent science-fiction movie, but it would seem alot of people wouldn't agree with me.

I can understand the negative views on Episode II and III, but Episode I put itself on the same level as the original movies for me.

Anyway, this is why I am asking fellow Escapists over why Star Wars: Episode I is regarded as bad. I would appreciate to be given insight into it!

Or I guess I could wait for Moviebob and other famous critics to explain their view points on it.

Because they reduced Darth Vader, one of the best sci-fi villains ever, to a whiny little boy. They also made The Force far less cool by giving it some crappy scientific explanation.

Midichlorians... At least that's what I think. The Force was explained as a very mysterious thing, a way of all life to follow and the flow of the cosmos that some sway to and others stand their ground against effectively separating its current and changing the outcome of the galaxy.

Then they just tell us they're symbiotic germs that make you freakish. That really destroys the attractiveness of the Force. I don't want to be considered diseased and definitely not the Severe Case of it.

I actually like the 1st episode. Maybe it's just the kid in me talking (I haven't seen it in years), but I liked it. I did not like the 2nd and 3rd ones however, they were horrible (especially the 3rd one *shudder*)

One word: midichlorians. Taking away the mystique of how the Force worked made many of the fans hate this one.

EDIT: However, this [link]http://darthsanddroids.net/episodes/0001.html[/link] makes me watch the film with new eyes, and makes it about 10000% funnier.

But you can always skip over that, pretend it doesn't exist. Or better yet, say the midichlorians are like a medium. The Force is still big and mysterious, so much so that you need the help of near-supernatural microscopic entities to help you communicate with it.

Also, BRIANBLESSED as Boss Nass made up for all the problems in that movie.

Good child actors? Are you kidding me? The kid who played Anakin was one of the worst child actors I have EVER seen. His performance was absolutely horrid. Add this to the creepy romance he was having with the much older Padme and its obvious that they should have gone with an older actor for the character.

But you want to know why people really hated that movie? One: it was exceedingly childish. The Ewoks in episode 6 were bad enough, but Jar Jar Binks brought Star Wars down to level of stupidity that it had only reached in spin-offs like the Star Wars Christmas Special.

Second: It heavily screwed with the mythos of Star Wars in ways the fans didn't like. The force is caused by little things in your blood? Anakin built C3PO as a child? Thanks Lucas.

Third: The acting and writing were plain awful. There's not much that needs to be said about that.

Midichlorians, Jar Jar, Emokin (Well, OK, that wasn't till episode 2), shoe horning in every character they could, Jar Jar, making the jedi some kind of galactic government even though in episode 4 people consider them a myth, Jar Jar, what they did to Yoda with CGI, Jar Jar.

Personally, I think it's the best of the prequel trilogy simply because the lightsaber duel was actually fairly tense and done like the ones in the original trilogy, rather than the force hopscotch and pinball yoda from episode 2, but even with Brian Blessed, Samuel L Jackson and Liam Neeson, nothing makes up for Jar Jar, let alone the midichlorians.

Okay, yes one can ignore the canon explanation in the film, but given that those little bacteria essentially make Anakin who he is it's kind of hard to forget. Once you've seen it you can't unsee it. I personally didn't care that much about them and tend to ignore them as the explanation because it really makes very little sense with the way the Force was presented in the earlier films. Liam Neeson and Ewan MacGreggor actually made Ep. 1 for me. Boss Nass is only in it for like 5 minutes.

Midichlorians.
Vader built C3PO.
Jar Jar.
The whole thing was setup around a futuristic NASCAR race.
Also, hot Natalie Portman/10 year old kid hitting on each other was creepy as hell.

Yes...it was better than 2 and 3. While watchable...it still wasn't very good.

Twas better than Ep 2, maginally, because of the Duel on Fates scene at the end and no teenage Aniken. Jar Jar was pretty bad, as was midichlorians but they've been noted above and explained so I'll leave it at that

(If you're one of the 5 or 6 people who haven't yet seen the movies, this vid contains MASSIVE SPOILERS!)

That's true, they did act well. Some people say they were a bit stoic though. Although I suppose you could say that since they were very conservative (in a Jedi sense) Jedi, it would make sense to not show much emotion BAH! But Darth Maul's scenes were pretty awesome too.
