Why is the confederacy of the Civil War the governing body of space?

Am I the only one sick of this? The Confederacy was NOT a good thing and my ancestor fighting on the Confederate side during the Civil War is a dark part of my family history. So can we please stop this? And why is it always a southern condereracy (hell, starcraft puts the freaking bars&stars on the starships)? Is it because of that old phrase," The South shall rise again!," or is it because of everyones fascination with the space cowboy, or even there referring to the frontier of the West during the early years of the USA and how space is the final frontier?

Am I the only one that's pissed off about this or can someone atleast explain it to me.

I believe the reason why the Confederacy existed in Starcraft was because all the original Terran settlers of the are were political dissidents. So I guess most of them were that (i.e. "The South will rise again!") type. When the forces from Earth show up they are a bunch of Confederates.

As for the whole Western feel its probably due to that mixing of civilization and wilderness that is the core of the common "Western" image of today. This can easily be applied to space colonization; colonies would naturally be seperated by great swathes of utter nothingness (made all the greater if there is no FTL travel), not to mention the whole "untamed" planet which was chugging along just fine without them. So the spirit of the Western can be very easy to implant into a sci-fi universe where not all of the known world is "civilized".

Well, your view on the Confederacy is a bit simplistic, is all.

Yes, slavery was a large issue regarding the secession, but a lot of it was the fact that the North was essentially making the South its *****. It would go through all these sneaky little ways to deprive the southern states of their rights. Combine that with the fact that Washington DC was in the North, and they essentially had the cards stacked against them. Yes, it was arguably for the greater good, but the kind of governing the north did to abolish slavery was questionably legal at best.

I'd say the confederate flag was in Starcraft because a lot of the Terrans are good ol' hicks.

I would imagine cause most starter govs for places are confederacies (since a confederacy is just the idea of states holding power over the central, and not vice versa).

Besides, the United States of America started as a confederacy. So it doesnt have to be modeled after the CSA.

Nor do southerners have to be ashamed if tehy're relatives fought for that side. The South just wanted to live thier life, the Union got up on a high horse, war erupted for 4 years, and in the end it just created more strife and gave rise to the KKK. Unless your family stil things that every black person they see should be in the fields, there's nothing wrong with supporting the ideas of a confederacy.

... Just know its a flawed system that will never work out without some major big brothering.

Because a Confederacy is an association of sovereign states or communities. The U.S was a Confederation before it was united buy a federal government, see the Articles of Confederation

To build on this I'd like to add that the Lombard League in Italy was also a confederacy. Confederacy just means more power on a local level.

As someone truly neutral, it's actually quite comical how few people understand the true set of causes behind the US civil war.
