I'm just confused as to why, if you were going to be a cynic (Which, believe me, I have no problem with), you'd choose to quote my wonderfully whimsical post.

...I just wanted to bring joy to these masses...

Ah. I apologize for not catching the whimsical. 'Tis quite late and I've been without sleep for quite a bit of time now. lol

Someone wrote a whole series of books, based entirely on the fact: A government hating, racist prick time traveling to the civil war and teaching the South how to produce AK-47s.

I never figured out what was more hilarious, that the author honestly seemed to think the South should have won, or that he basically writes about how utterly fucked up the world would be if they had won.
Books please? Name, author, anything? It seems REALLY interesting.
I wish I could help you, but I read them in B&N.

I know where there at in my store though. I'm going tomorrow to get a book... I'll PM you the author if I can find him.

Well, Bulletstorm's government was run by A confederacy. The problem is that the OP seems to think that the Civil War Confederates are the only Confederates to ever exist. In reality, it probably wouldn't be a bad form of government if you needed to control several planets that were light years apart.

The author is Harry Turtledove and you're confusing two separate works. The book with the time-traveling racists is called Guns of the South and was a standalone novel.

The series...doesn't really have a name. There are three series within the series (plus another book before it) that cover the Second Mexican War, World War I, the interwar years, and World War II. I have no idea what the author's personal views are, but seeing some of Freedom Party stuff that goes on, he can't be that big a fan of the CSA.

You're all just crabby because WE WON THE CIVIL WAR.
It was an industrial society up against an agricultural society. Even speaking from south of the Mason Dixon. What did you THINK was going to happen?

Suck it, everyone south of the Mason Dixon!
Hey, I'm just saying.

Northern states rule.
I'll be really honest, I don't particularly care for this argument. In many ways, both sides equally suck. I'm a Southerner and I'm proud (and about as far away from the white trash stereotype as you can get), but that doesn't mean I don't see the flaws of the people of the region.
I want to keep this going.

But it seems you're taking it WAY to seriously.
Not at all. I just believe that the War itself was an inevitable event, but the consequences of it have just dragged on far longer than they should have on both sides. I just would have thought at this point that the "North vs. South" argument would be moot at this point.
Understandably though, the south finds pride in reenacting this war, which in my opinion they should be ashamed, not proud. They choose to relive this as a proud moment even though they lost and if not only partially, they were fighting for something that today would be deemed really racist. Its like if the germans reenacted WW2.

To put this in context, I'm on neither side as I live in Wyoming.
The only part that I took pride in from the Civil War was the acknowledgment that Texas has the best soldiers.

Er... in Starcraft the Confederacy is the BAD guys. And from many peoples point of view, they are in real life too. Does that answer your question?

If not... if you're pissed off about that imagine how annoyed a lot of Germans are every time a WW2 game comes out. To be honest, there are far worse things to ***** and moan about.

Why is it that, when a semi-successful thread on the escapist pops up, there are always going to be 5 or 6 more involving the same thing, over the course of the day?

Its simply word association on your part, a confederacy is still a legitimate governing body and only has the dark past that people like you associate to it. or it may simply have sounded cool to them when they thought of it.

Am I the only one sick of this? The Confederacy was NOT a good thing and my ancestor fighting on the Confederate side during the Civil War is a dark part of my family history. So can we please stop this? And why is it always a southern condereracy (hell, starcraft puts the freaking bars&stars on the starships)? Is it because of that old phrase," The South shall rise again!," or is it because of everyones fascination with the space cowboy, or even there referring to the frontier of the West during the early years of the USA and how space is the final frontier?

Am I the only one that's pissed off about this or can someone atleast explain it to me.
Probably for same reasons why unionists and rascist white people over here in Australia keep using the Eureka Stockade flag.

http://www.aaac.100megsfree5.com/pics/eurekaflag.gif

Despite the fact that they got their asses handed to them, its a symbol of pride, freedom (their own mind you) and rebellion.

For myself I think it's the whole space cowboy/western thing. As Star Trek said space is the final frontier, and nothing epitomises the frontier mentallity as the wild west. Of course the confederacy had nothing to do with the wild west but I imagine the flag might be one of the first things to pop in some peoples heads. Go figure

To that end the Terrans in Starcraft are a futuristic satire of the confederacy. They are meant to act and sound just like the south won the civil war and became an intergalactic power. They are oppressive and fascist and meant to offend your sensibilities so don't get too upset that's what it's meant to look and sound like. I supose it would be for me if someone did a satirical game in Australia and we're all convicts chasing aboriginals, riding kangaroos whilst dodging drop bears - it would undoubtably piss me off but in the end its (hopefully) satire.

You wanna do this, bro? It wasn't the Confederacy that was begging the great state of Kentucky to side with them. I'll see you in the parking lot.

It's no more than that frontier thing. A lot of sci-fi has had that sort of western vibe for a long time, and yes I know the Confederacy was not a western thing. I think you're reading too much into it. Personally, I never saw the starcraft setting as a southern thing as much as a Clint Eastwood/John Wayne style western kind of thing. The use of the term Confederacy probably has very little to do the actual Confederate States of America.

Okay, the south didn't invent the term "Confederacy". Any fictional political organization calling itself a Confederacy is not referring to the South in the Civil War - hell, the whole U.S. was briefly a confederacy (remember those dear old Articles of Confederation?)

But your real point, I think, is that every space opera ever is a big-bad-government versus the little guys story. And cowboys make really good heroes. I'm tired of it too.

GODDAMMIT JIM, YOU ARE NOT AN EMO! He was the best of us...
