Why are we always the badguys is what I'd like to know. We weren't Nazis, the south didn't have a plan to take over the world. They were fighting for their rights, and while yes, Slavery was a part of the war, it was a different world back then. People thought it was normal, and they didn't think of it as wrong. Imagine a world where suddenly killing cows for beef is considered as wrong as racism is today. They would talk about us like butchers (well, you know, the bad kind) for eating cows. But to us, it's just something we do everyday for food.
But seriously, they were fighting for their way of life. They were normal people that believed in what they were fighting for. No one shoved them on the frontlines, they were there by choice (at least at the start, might've been different near the end.) But my ancestors (probably) weren't evil people bent on world domination. We're always the evil stupid badguy hicks in movies. The flag wasn't even used as a racist symbol until the KKK started using it, and now everyone that wants to "be" southern thinks they have to be racist hillbillies. Racist and "CSA" aren't always the same thing. Whats worse is that there are people that even NOW think that once you cross the Mason Dixon line, we all turn into ignorant morons swilling beer and spouting racial slurs. They expect to see the lowest depths that a human can reach, creating a cesspool of filth and incest. Believe it or not, some of us actually graduated highschool!
But yeah...I guess that kind of hit a nerve with me. I mean seriously, we don't have to be the badguys all the time. I'm proud of my family that fought in the war for what they believed in. It might've been wrong, but they believed in it and fought for it. Thats more then most people can say they've done today. I can't see us rising up over the insanely high gas prices anytime soon. We'll all just sit back and take it like always. But seriously, can we have a confederate character that isn't an evil beer swilling woman beating racist pig?
