let me start by saying that I am in no way and anime or manga fan, I find the majority of it to be extremely cliché and unoriginal. I don't read the books, I don't watch the shows, and I don't play the games... usually. So my friend bought the latest naruto fighting game for the PS3 and despite my better judgement, I played a little.

Many parts were as I expected, lots of pre-rendered special attacks, graphics that could have been from the PS1, and enough quick time events to give yahtzee a case of shingles. There were however, several gameplay features that I found refreshingly original and interesting. The open environment, variety of long range weapons, and significant variation in the different characters fighting styles.

Anyway, I've only played a bit, but I was curious about your guys' opinions. good, bad, original, knockoff ect...

Frankly I dont think I'm a very good judge because I don't play allot of these games (naruto, butokai...) So I cant tell if these features are original or just copying an older game.

Thank GOD. I thought this was gonna be some ninja fanboy thread.

Why oh why are all the guys that fit into the 'geek' stereotype, obsessed with ninjas!?

Anyway, to answer your question, I played the Naruto game, and I hate Naruto, and anime too. But I found the game a lot of fun, if I ignored what it actually was.

As little as I like Naruto, and double that for the average Naruto fan-boy, I've played a little of a few Naruto games and was forced to admit that they tend to be better than they've any right to be. I still can't stand the characters and don't care about the story, but the games are sort of fun.

I wouldn't say they're startling original or deep, but they aren't bad.

And that's the only time I will ever use "Naruto" and "isn't bad" in the same post.

As to why he wears orange, I couldn't say. Not sure how what he does qualifies as ninjutsu, either. But I guess a fake ninja can wear any stupid color he wants.

What about the actually question in the title? Why the hell is a ninja whereing orange? If they were in the desert i might could understand but from what i have seen their in a freakin jungle. Its like painting a bullseye on yourself while running around yelling "hit me kill me pleeeeaassse."

I confess, I'm a 32-year-old Naruto fan. At least I can carry it off with a little more grace and civilty than your average American elementary school student - I hope.

First off, Naruto's mythos is a pretty far out there. These guys are wielding some pretty wacky powers, separated from Dragonball Z-esque power accumulation perhaps by a thin layer of finesse required to pull off their "jutsu." Suffice to say, you're able to summon a stream of water out of the ground and fill it with piranha before siccing it on your enemy (actually happened) the fact you're wearing orange is probably the least of your concerns.

Second, Naruto himself is a bit of a brash knucklehead who scarcely cares if anyone sees him coming. He's got a bit of Popeye in him that he's the type to stand up for what's right even if he gets pummeled for it. [Most of the episodes have people learning to admire this rather suicidal quality of his.]

I'm not sure this needs to be in gaming discussion. There are Naruto games, sure, but this is probably better of off-topic.

Also seperated by a lack of 15 minute stool straining. What? I like DBZ, I can mock it.

Anyway, yes, the Naruto games are suprisingly decent. I think it's because the creators realized they couldn't skate on the IP like DBZ will till the end of time.

As for "Why is the Ninja wearing orange", why is the PLUMBER wearing orange?! Why is the fighting robot with the cannon on his arm all blue?

wow. I didnt realize the title of my post would garner this much response. As to why I chose it, I just find it slightly odd that a ninja, someone who traditionally uses stealth, would insist on wearing the most attention grabbing color he could find. I mean seriously, he looks like he just broke out of a correctional facility!

Oh come on, are you seriously trying to implement the stereotype that Ninjas are all stealth and black on a Naruto game? Come on, grow some eyes man, and just let it eXpAnD...dude.

But who reallys cares? Plumbers usually wear dirty overalls with no specific color, robots are usually clunky and gray, why must you stereotype the poor ninja?

Naruto at least wears something with black in Shippuuden. The only character in Naruto who is close to a ninja is Kakashi and even he is weird.

Anyway I played the game and I liked it. Sure I would rather play Tekken (my least favourite fighting franchise) than this but it's decent.

Also I don't understand your problem with the graphics. They are very good and very close to the anime.

Its not that the graphics were really bad, its just that this stylized, cell shaded style uses a fraction of the PS3's capabilities. I thought the rational for paying five hundred bucks for a system was the superior graphics. Playing Naruto on a PS3 is like buying the worlds fastest car but only driving it in school zones.

I always thought it was hilarious that there were G.I. Joe action figures that were glow-in-the-dark ninjas. Can someone explain the logic of that to me please?

It's not about not stereotyping a ninja, it's about not RIDICULING ancient shadow warriors of tradition.

Something is not a stereotype if it's true.
Actually the black costume is a false stereotype. It started in the Kabuki theatre where stages hands dressed in all black and were ignored by the cast members and audience. But when a ninja attack/assassination occurred it was an actor dressed as a stagehand, it represented the social invisibility of the ninja and caused genuine surprise in the audience when a guy moving a piece of scenery dropped it and stabbed an actor.

Real Ninjas were the masters of disguise, not black costumes, rather they dressed as servants, farmers and soldiers wherever necessary. In the field of battle they either disguised themselves as farmers (using farm tools as weapons) caught up in the battle or wore Samuri armour, which they either camouflaged with branches while hiding in ambush or carried changeable flags/motifs so the enemy thought they were allies.

Hattori Hanzo, the most famous ninja looks more like a samuri in portraits.

What really made ninja different was that they were not bound by a code of honour like Samuri

Edit. I wrote an English assignment on Ninjas in popular cutlure.

My understanding of authentic ninjas is that they were really little more than peasants who offered to do jobs too dirty for the Samurai to touch. However, that's not the whole story, some Ninja ended up serving as everything from diplomats to high ranked government officials.

Reading a bit of the wikipedia right now (for what good that does) Ninja may have been a counterculture to the Samurai. Because the ruling Samurai class wrote the history books, they may have largely exaggerated the concept of ninja as being little more than hired thugs who handled matters too dishonorable for decent folk to deal with. Apparently many Ninja may have been descended from (my heroes) Buddhists escaping religious persecution of the imperials in the 7th century.

But, yes, they didn't always wear black - that's a popular urban legend. They probably would dress in relatively typical garb, perhaps masquerading as peasants or roaming military men, as it would allow them to move about undetected more effectively than wearing an outfit that would easily identify them as a ninja. If ninjas really were a counterculture movement in Feudal Japan, they probably spent a lot of time trying to avoid being executed.
