Why is the Xbox One so ugly?

I mean seriously, the design is about 30 years out of date.

Admittedly I've still not seen what the PS4 will end up looking like, but if this is Microsoft's best aesthetic effort, the PS4's design wont have much competition.

It is?

Really, that's just your opinion. Personally, I think it looks pretty cool but that's just me.

It's just an uninspired black brick. Like a VCR, or a cable box, which coincidentally is what the Xbone is trying to be.

Were they trying to literally make it a "Box" this time?

Personally, the aesthetic look of a console could mean fuck all to me so long as it's a good console with good games and support, but with all the evidence to the contrary it's design is just another nail in the coffin for Microsoft's gaming community.

I think the PS4 is doing awesome right now. No other console I remember was this good pre-launch.
Whether it's ugly or not is for the kids to decide. The hardcore gamers will buy it for its games. I think it looks a lot like a set-top box for a TV.

I don't think its ugly, kinda makes me nostalgic for old VHS systems. Now if we could get a system with some wooden framing like the Atari, now that would be stylin'.

:p

It... doesn't look like anything actually. Just a plain ol' brick.

If only it were a magic brick then I would take notice...

Alas, it looks like it'll end up being a tragic brick instead.

I actually don't mind it too much. Sure, they could have done a lot to make it prettier, but at least it looks like a form factor with functionality over aesthetics. The last time, they did it the opposite way, which resulted in a funky form factor that messed up the air circulation in the thing, substantially contributing to the heating issues that bricked a large amount of the consoles. Yeah, I'm fine with an ugly black box.

Simplicity. They want a entry-level everything-feature product for the TV, and a simple look makes people more likely to buy it as it seems easy to use!

I don't think its ugly, neither is it attractive. Microsoft must be trying to make it as inoffensive looking as possible to appeal to as many people as possible.

You can always pimp it with stickers I suppose.
Pimping ain't easy, but someone's gotta do it.

The worst part is I think the PS4 is going to look like a massive black monolith that is barely tolerable to look at.

Because as Windows 8 has already shown, Microsoft have no taste and are desperately trying to copy Apple.

Bring out the rainbow stickers I say, I just got a look at the Xbox One.

I imagine the shape was a result of not wanting to make special parts that form fit into a special case. It was probably a cost saving factor. Also, if we go with the theme of wanting it to be a natural part of people's living rooms then having an eye catching shape would be counter to their ideal. It's a box that fits in with all the other boxes under the tv.

Screw you, I like it. I liked the PS3's design as well. It's black and shiny, that's all it needs.

I'd like to know what a modern console looks like though. Does it need to be curved? With parabolas, even? Or perhaps a sphere? Or tetrahedron? At the end of the day, it's a block you put discs in and plug leads into.

It's a very nice looking rectangle, with nice visual divider lines.
I don't see the problem.
I think the 360's a smidge ugly, and the PS3. Maybe I don't like curves on my machines.
