Why is there so much stigma attached to Pokemon?

I agree. I think part of the reason is that the modern gamer is usually exposed to games like Manhunt and Grand Theft Auto at a young age. I'm not saying this makes them deranged, blood-hungry psychopaths, but after blowing people up with a rocket launcher and seeing body parts fill the screen and your player character getting drenched in blood, game franchises like Pokemon are too tame for young teenagers around age 12-14. I'm not sure if I'm right. I myself don't find myself lusting for blood every time I play something not rated X, but it could be a factor. Depends on the person. Also another reason, Pokemon is aimed at kids. Little kids. Humans are naturally social creatures, they try to fit in. If little kids get made fun of by older kids for playing pokemon, they naturally stop to avoid this ostracization. Then the fact that pokemon is for kids is drilled into their skulls and they impose their anti pokemon dominance on the next generation of fresh-faced, pokemon loving youngsters. The cycle goes on. If you somehow manage to avoid being singled out for playing pokemon in puberty, let's face it. You either lose interest because you yourself start to find it childish because of all that testosterone in you, or you find out you're the one playing Pokemon when everyone else is getting high and fucking with eachother. Then at a certain age, let's say 18 or so, when you're more mature you reflect on those ages when you loved pokemon. Once you've matured fully you feel as if you can let out the child in you again and you realize, Pokemon isn't so nerdy and unfun after all. [/RANT]

Breeding? You mean I could make my pikachu fuck my mew? Wow... I never knew that!

I think that's a good point. It seems that the majority of people who are dicks about Pokemon are the ones who think that life revolves around alcohol and punani.

I will buy soul silver to pass some time on journeys and stuff. I can't see me seriously getting into the games again.

Ha, ha. Both Pokemon have to be the same kind iirc.

The show turned into a mindless, childish piece of crap and the image of Pokemon changed to fit.

To the average human being who just sees the show, you can't really blame them.

Pokemon's only real stigma is that familiarity breeds contempt. Pokemon were a hot new concept... in 1996. Now we're up to Pokemon Movie twelve and seriously questioning the continued viability of this media franchise. They've already experimenting with spinoffs.

Nothing wrong with MD though. Hell, if you want to eliminate ALL stigma and discomfort in public about it just ask Wizards of the Coast to slap a Dungeons and Dragons license sticker on it to brand it as a variation on d20, and job done. That's essentially what it is anyway; My First DnD starring Pokémon.

Man, I wish DnD was as available as MD is over here in the UK. Damn Games Workshop screwing everyone and WotC out of their money with overpriced tabletop strategy games that are infinitely inferior to the PC version.

There's stigma because... people can give out stigma for flimsy, flimsy reasons. The basic chain of thought against Pokemon goes something like this - 'Pokemon is colourful and cartoony, and therefore is for kids and lame becuase kids are stupid'.
I still love it though.

Also...

Nope, just the same egg group. But Mew is unbreedable.

I just bought Leaf Green for my SP after falling out of interest in it after the Gold and Silver came around many years ago. Now I'm afraid to be seen playing it around my friends (apart from ym girlfriend because she thinks Pokemon is so cute) because they're so masculine playing their Modern Warfare 2 and drinking their manly beer.

Pokemon gets the same stigma that anything that's heavily JRPG or Anime based gets. They just don't understand its greatness and will ignorantly trash whatever they don't understand or what the mainstream tells them to like.

This x1000.

Seriously, no matter how good the game is, it will always be associated with that god-awful kids anime.

The games are solid, but the show kinda got worse with age (at least the english dub) and now i'm just waiting for when ash becomes badass and gets a girl , but its probably more likely he ends up gay with brock (there is actually an underground bet about what will happen, that and if he'll ever catch a legendary).

Clearly people who view Pockmans as childish have never bothered to get into the hardcore parts of the game.

I'm looking at you, online community. With all your ridiculous training stuff that I don't remember.

the only reason i can realy think of is because it became a childhood fad way back when, if something becomes a childhood fad, ESPECIALY A GAME, its bound to end up being considered "childish" and your gerneraly gonna eb considered a weirdo for playing it. Thats not to say if a game becomes popular it wont be considered childish later on, thats a totaly different story

oh jeez should i feel insulted by somebody in the 10yr old mindset who cant provide arguments? i think not.
You're obviously way too cool for this thread. I'm suprised you even graced it with your wit and intelligence. Surely you should be off writing nobel prize worthy literature and having threesomes with playbiy bunnies.
Imma cancel everything you typed with the word "twat" have a nice day
Imma cancel everything you typed with an arrogant, generic and patronising response. :)

"You should have grown out of trolling when you stopped watching Power Rangers."
ha? Im trolling? you should look back on who threw the first insult.
You knew that you were flame baiting when you posted that. It was hardly a constructive point.
Oh because you posts have been super constructive right? They asked why the stigma with pokemon, i stated my opinion on why, you didn't like it and called me the European version of asshole, and so on. You don't like my opinion then kindly i have the right to tell you "Up yours!"

The only people who tease me about still playing pokemon are my parents saying that I have never given up my youthful spirit (i'm only 20 goddammit and a student to boot. I didn't realize that people grow up at uni), but its just good natured ribbing because they associate it with when I was growing up. I still remember when my mum bought me Pokemon red and I would play it non-stop.... good times :)

I am ambiviliant towards the entire thing for the most part. When the craze made it's way to the US, I was well out of the demographic. I had played Magic: The Gathering for a short while sometime before pokemon launched and it appeared to be a grab at a younger audience. The games that I have played are competent for a time but highly repetative and won't hold my interest long. The Cardgame has always been exactly like MTG only lacking some of the head crushing depth (I'm not saying this is actually a bad thing, just an observation). In general, I do hold any real opinion on the subject or the people who choose to partake in the consumption of related media. That said, since most of those people who do enjoy these things are younger than me, I often find we have different frames of reference on a variety of subjects. People who's first games were on the PS2 literally shock me. I don't think I'm hold but when I hear that sort of thing I start to reconsider my position. 20 is the new 30 I guess.

People think the show is in any way connected to the games, so they hate the show and hate the game by association.
