Why is this site so split about Fallout 3?

Because Fallout 3 is a great game with several glaring flaws, making it hit-or-miss with the audience.
Best answer, couldn't agree more. With both Fallout 3 and Oblivion, Bethesda has the base for exceptional games. They just need to fulfill more of the promise, and then you'll have some pretty special games.

Because some people can't get enough of calling out a company that reskinned its previous game (Oblivion) then hijacked an existing series (Fallout) for some quick cash-in fun.

Also people here are very opinionated, there's mine ^

Here's the opinion of two people

Person 1: "The world is so huge and atmospheric"
Person 2: "The world is so big, empty, brown and grey. It's boring."

Person 1: "VATS completely makes the game. I don't want to do combat without it now"
Person 2: "I might as well be playing a Final Fantasy game if I use VATS. Pausing the action to take the highest percentage shot? No thanks. It's just a cover up for poor gun mechanics"

Person 1: "There are so many side missions, or you can just explore. I love that it doesn't force you to take on it's story until you want to."
Person 2: "So...my dad who I love very much is missing and possibly dead, but I shouldn't look for him. I should go blow up a town. Because that makes sense. The story is barely there"

Person 1: "It really sells that you're on your own having to survive"
Person 2: "Because the poorly animated 'characters' are poorly written and inconsequential"
What if both are right?
I mean, the game world IS both huge and atmospheric AND, for the most part, boring.
There must be some facts we can use to judge if this game is good or not. Not everything is about opinion.

Personaly , my bigest complain is that Fallout 3 is the only game I have needed to download a cracked version of, AFTER I bought the bloody game! Bloody games for windows live ruined my playing experience (it keept crashing the game) and I was only able to finish the game (what a stupid, let-down ending!) after I used a mod to get rid of the damn thing.
As a result, I have not bought any of the add-on packs, but I am planing on getting New Vegas on STEAM when it is released because I am told it will not have bloody GFWL...

Every day it seams, there is either a new topic about "how great Fallout 3 is" or "how Fallout 3 is destroying RPGs." Why is that? There is nothing wrong with disagreeing on somethings quality, but for the most part this site is set on its game. There are exceptions, like Halo, but never have I seen such a huge split then this subject? Is it because this site just has a lot of people that remember the old games and a lot of newer younger gamers that never got to play them? Or is there something else I am just not seeing?
Simple, there's three kinds of people.

1) Those that were around and gaming at that time (and before then) and played Fallout 1+2 and have something to compare Fallout 3 to.

2) Those that weren't around and/or gaming at that time (and before then) and played Fallout 3 (and maybe Oblivion) and believe they are the the paragon/pinnacle of RPGs and try to defend it cause they don't have anything to compare it to.

3) Those that weren't around and/or gaming at the time (and before then) and played Fallout 3 (and maybe Oblivion) and tried Fallout 1 or 2 afterwards but couldn't clear the barrier of bad graphics or aged UI, thus couldn't get into it and think 1) are either idiots or are using a pair of "rose-tinted glasses".
What about people like me who weren't around gaming at the time of Fallout 1 and 2 and played Fallout 3, liked it, tried Fallout 1&2, and liked them A LOT more than Fallout 3? I mean, you should include my demographic.

But yeah, it's mostly people who like the old or the new or both and talk talk talk. Personally I prefer Fallout 1 and 2, and you can't accuse me of wearing the rose-tinted glasses.

Here's how I see it.

Fallout 3:

Pro's - Gameplay, Atmosphere
Con's - that poor, poor excuse of a story, merely offers the illusion of choice, Games For Windows Live crippled the game for me

Fallout 1 + 2:

Pro's- Story, humor
Con's- Gameplay, technical difficulties, story is a bit cliche, however its still well done.

Thats my opinions, and people fight about which is better because, well people like to argue and ***** and don't care about other people's opinions.

I just meant this, you should not consider opinion irrelevant, or, as you said, meaningless.
I guess i do need to find a different word. I don't think opinions are pointless or meaningless. True, they don't MEAN anything, in any true sense. But i don't mean to say that i don't care about others opinions. I think your opinion is fascinating. I always push and push to try and find out why someone has a certain opinion.

Quite a few years back, a friend of mine (and I) went to see Constantine in theatres. He pissed and moaned about wasting his money all the way back to my house. At which point i asked him why he didn't like it. He simply said "because it was shit". So i said "prove to me that Constantine is shit". He spent the next 10 MINUTES trying to figure out how to prove it without simply restating his opinion. He then gave up over sandwiches and conceded that it was just a feeling. I then asserted that i enjoyed it. So he thought he'd be smug and say "prove that it was a good movie!", to which i simply said, "i never said it was a good movie. I only said i enjoyed it".

Because this is the motherfucking internet, and the internet is WAR. PURE, UNADULTERATED, WAR.

People envisioned violent sports, or giant robots fighting, as a replacement for war? No.

Internet trolling is the replacement for war.
I was going to quote the original post and chime in on how he's probably right about the younger gamers, on average, not playing the original two games but I'm going to let that slide and just agree with you.

What this guy said. SRS.

I dunno, I still think the game that has the most split audience is Assassin's Creed 1.

Besides, The Escapist community voted Fallout 3 as the best game of all time, so it has to be doing SOMETHING right.

People don't seem to understand the concept of "opinion".
Well it's more to do with that most people are very good at GIVING their opinions, or at least shoving them into other people's faces, but they aren't very good at all at listening and appreciating the opinions of others. The result are threads pages and pages long, full of blurted opinion but almost no actual discussion. People today tend to freeze their opinions solid. We are all told that from the day we are born that opinions are our 'right' and our 'worth' and that should never be 'stolen' from us. So we end up defending them, even against something as natural as discussion.

I didn't play fallout 1 or 2, and still thought F3 was wanting. Sure, it had some cool things in it, but the depth just wasn't there. Same guns almost the entire game through, a poorly balanced skill system (That gives you enough skill points to max out pretty much everything) a silly level cap... and bad guys that scale in difficulty so you have an experience as 'grey' as the backdrop.

It wasn't a bad game, it just had so many little things it could have done to be awesome, that it is hard to not focus on the mistakes.

My problem with the game is that it doesn't seem to want to make up its mind. Is it an RPG? Is it an FPS? Hybrids are okay but if the majority of your gameplay is in FPS mode do NOT require stat points to hit your freaking target. Not only that but requiring me to use Vats to even inflict damage half the time? not cool.

I could two shot a rad scorpion in Vats but normally? God no, i could empty an entire clip from my shotgun and it would STILL have full health.

Its not the fact i played the first two. Mostly because i only Liked F2 and not the first one. I would have loved Fallout 3 like candy if they had just tightened up the shooting to something respectable.

That's my opinion. That why after three separate attempts i hated it, that's why i traded the sucker in.

Fallout 3 is a good game that is heavily flawed, Fallout 1 and 2 are great games with some flaws. However unlike the first two most of F3's flaws can be removed. Yeah poor NPC dialogue and a weak main plot are going to stay forever, but lighting, balance, music and other such sundries have all been tweaked by an excellent modding community. Modded Fallout 3 is a great game that has some flaws, just like it's predecessors.

Yeah, modded Fallout 3 is quite good (albeit, in the different way than Fallout 1&2). Mostly, I play with FWE and it becomes a bit more like STALKER, which is a good thing.
