I was barely a gamer at all until I went to a mate's house and saw him playing Fallout 3. Things that are probably passe to "hardcore" gamers had my head spinning - Things like weapon degradation, stats affecting your progress / weapon skill and the like. Plus the scenery, atmosphere, ambience and the like drew me in. I would have never considered Fallout 3 had I not played it at my friends' place as it wasn't really "my kind of game" (At the time, the most played game in my collection was Need For Speed: Most Wanted).
Not long after that day, I had the game and now have all the DLC too. Oh and I am chomping at the bit to get New Vegas!
Fallout 3 turned me into a gamer!
Anyway, enough biography - back to the topic at hand.
As much as I babble on about FO3, I recognise that it has it's flaws but I challenge anyone to find a game that hasn't.
The key issue has already been touched on but I will re-iterate it anyway - It's all down to what people LIKE. What seems to be utterly unacceptable to many people is when other people like something they don't or don't like something they do. This makes no sense at all to me but what the f**k do I know, right?
A former colleague would big up WoW until he was blue in the face but I avoid it like the plague. Not because some people rate it higher than oxygen in their daily requirements but because the whole genre just doesn't interest me. I never bothered with Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings (to name but 2 examples) for the same reasons but I accept that there are folk who were queueing round the block for the latest installment. All this was of no interest to me but I never once mocked anyone who is into that kind of thing.
However it seems that so many people will get so bloody uppity when someone disagrees with them on what is such a pointless issue and this brings me back to the subject (Sorry, I went off on one again - damn!) at hand.
Some people just like different things but that is no excuse to jump on their head for it.
I like Fallout 3 but hate WoW.
Someone else hates Fallout 3 but likes WoW.
Big deal, someone call the "Waaahmbulance" (sarcasm).
The world keeps on turning, guys.
