Thread successfully derailed.... Again..... :D
It's a gift really.

Sometimes I don't even know I'm doing it :D
It got so derailed that the thread got locked... then unlocked again.
That may or may not have been me.

I was playing with my shiny buttons and I don't know if I did or didn't do something :D
Maybe we should place the shiny buttons under "Break In Case Of Troll" glass.

Fantastic idea!

Also don't worry TimeLord, even mods make mistakes sometimes :3

As a suggestion to the mods on this site about the escapist can i offer one idea? Just one.

For a single week/month or whatever. Lets have 1 new thread stickied in offchat. Lets call it the anarchy thread. Make it so in this thread no one can be banned for any reason. And lets see what happens. If it doesnt descend into complete 4chan ness maybe it tells us something about the users and rules? It would be interesting to see thats all im saying.

Would a single thread with this system be such a bad idea?

EDIT: I say this not as a feature for users to use BECAUSE it has no rules but rather to test and see how the users here really act when not in a rule bound environment. Perhaps serious discussion would still occur? Im just saying it would yield interesting information.

I'd far rather have the forum too well moderated then too loosely. Look at the Bandai CCG Forums, where the mods only use banning as a last resort. Conversations rarely go longer then a few posts before the flaming and attacks start, because people know they won't get in trouble. Any chance of adult speak goes down the tubes.

Personally, I love the forums here. It is a fortress of civil discussion (and MassRim threads, but you take the good with the bad) against the YouTube Comments and chans of the world.
Hence why I said there's some value to be had in such an approach. The problem is that the mods here take it too far.

Mod action on personal attacks against another poster makes perfect sense. Banning people for (for example) posting an image that expresses a complete idea, without a redundant paragraph further explaining it, does not.

There definitely should be mod action and rigid standards. The problem is that said standards are (in some cases) too strict and the mods are too eager to enforce it.

Edit: Also, the mods here have a not-entirely-undeserved reputation for excessive reactions to criticism. They generally do a decent job, from what I've seen, but there's definitely a few cases of people being banned for nothing more than criticizing them in a relatively reasonable manner.

Yeah, it kind of is.

I, for one, would avoid that thread like the plague. As would many who love the moderation around here.

And then, all of a sudden, everyone who takes advantage of the anarchy thread would become future mod-targets and people begin to dislike them, seeing how personal attacks would run wild and major "F*ck Authority" mindsets would reign. The renewed distrust and dislike that would be formed between various members would hurt the forum.

If you really want a bile bucket to spit bile into, there's always /b/...

Oh i dont, and you raise quite a few valid points against it. I was just curious as to what would happen if we took the lawless setting of 4 chan and applied it to escapist users. Would we neccessarily see the same results?

Yeah... No. I can't see that happening. It would encourage the kind of behaviour we try to prevent here. What would people gain from it? A place to "vent"? I've never understood the need to "vent" on the Internet. It's like releasing your anger in a strongly worded letter to your local paper. If you need to blow off steam then go shout at a mountain or talk it out with a friend or something.

We wouldn't, we'd see much worse results, seeing how there's a username attached to everything.

Cuz this site used to be a lot better.
Yeah, no it didn't.

I've been here for a long time and lurked for a long time before that.

I don't understand where all this 'the old times were better' nonsense is coming from.
It used to work a lot better,
and the threads weren't so easily derailed.
The site works just fine for me.

I can't really argue with your second point though.

Mostly my fault :3

This goes under the assumption that we would see a lot of hate and bile. This might not be the case. We might find that intelligent discourse is still maintained among users and that, while users are more ready to present opinions or say things that otherwise they might keep in their heads, real discussion isnt entirely replaced with flame and pointless spam.

That said im perfectly happy with the forum as is right now, i was just interested as to what such a thread would look like and its impact on the escapist community.

Kinda surprised to see the whole "elitist" thing brought up.

Personally I think it's a bit of horseshit. People here aren't elitist, they just try too hard to sound intelligent and end up coming off as condescending. Surely other people have seen things like this? Or am I just being a wanker?

Don't misunderstand me though, I love this site. Hell, these are the only forums I've been on where my post count has gone over "1" and where I bother coming back daily.

And doesn't elitist mean "Above the grasp of select individuals"?

The Escapist is open to everyone and requests that you don't be an ass. That's the extent of its requirements. Apparently, that's "elitist" now.
