I do like metal but after a while it begins to sound unbelievably samey from band to band and song to song. There aren't that many metal bands I can really get into.

You seem to be talking about extreme metal, which leaves out stuff like Tool and Avenged Sevenfold. And your main focus is death metal, which I don't listen to a whole lot of. Admittedly I have been listening to a lot of it recently (Veil of Maya, The Black Dahlia Murder, Between the Buried and Me) but I can't comment on it too much. Although I must say I fucking love Carcass, In Flames, and Dark Tranquility, and what I've heard out of stuff like Soilwork is pretty damn amazing.

Yes, I get metal. The concerts do make you feel connected, especially at small metalcore concerts where I can actually socalize with people who listen to the same stuff that I do. And I am definitely a fan.

Let me also add that I used to HATE screaming. Hate, hate HATE it. Just as much as the people on here that hate it if not more. But now, for some reason it sounds GREAT to me. Except for Bring Me the Horizon...that gets pretty annoying after a while.

Heavy metal doesn't make me feel angry...I listen to it a lot when I'm pissed off and it provides a release for my emotions. I also listen to it normally, as it's the main music that I listen to.

So here's two of the bands I've been listening to a lot recently:

Fixed that.

Also, I listened to those songs and the Periphery one blew my mind. Great stuff.

I honestly can't stand death metal. I don't care what it's about. Here's an exaggerated scenario:

If you go and step on my face to make the statement that we're all getting stepped on by the government, you still stepped on my face. I don't like my face getting stepped on, so I could care less about what you were showing me by doing it.

I know that that was a very exaggerated example, but much in the same way, I don't like death metal. Sure, maybe there is a big philosophy about it. Maybe they are making a powerful artistic statement. Trouble for me is, I don't like the sound. Playing music to show a philosophy is fine, but it doesn't help if it's painful to listen to. I've heard some heavy music in my lifetime. Some Slayer, even A7X counts, right? I've analyzed them, I've found some interesting things in their favor. But I honestly can't listen to the horrible loudness that is presented. It makes me uncomfortable to hear, like listening to Revolution 9 [small](shudder shudder)[/small].

Side note: Why on Earth would the group Morbid Angel ever cut themselves with razor blades before a show? That's unhealthy, really stupid, and (maybe only to people like myself) not as hardcore as you think. The chicken getting torn apart at that Alice Cooper show was more hardcore than that.

But I don't care about their philosophy, that we're all primal creatures. Maybe we are, but I don't care to hear your music to prove it. Especially if that music is noisy guitars and yelling into a microphone for 4 and-a-half minutes. I'm gonna take John Coltrane over Slayer any day. That being said,
:)

It makes me want to scream "ARGH TURN IT OFF!".

I just don't see the appeal, at all.

Ahh, that's better.
A man after my own heart. The 00's was a great decade for folk.

I saw Bon Iver open for Wilco in 2008 and I've been hooked ever since.

It is neither a philosophy nor a political statement. It's just sound that makes people feel good. You don't like it? That's cool with me.

That's not their philosophy, it's my attempt to describe the good feeling the music gives me.

There's an equally important place for both John Coltraine and Slayer in the world :D

You really know your stuff MiracleOfSound, all these songs you posted are really good.

I'm not a fan of any genre (maybe progressive rock), I just listen to anything that has a good melody or riff, even black metal like Deathspell Omega. However, I never really understood why people could get so stuck into it so thanks for the info.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39a-XD6D67I - if you haven't heard them before :)

I have to say though, I prefer good singing to screamo.
That song was beautiful. Thanks for the kind words!

Personally I don't like Screamo at all, it does nothing for me. It feels a little contrived or something.

I like to think of A7X as the everyman's metal band. They don't really have any screaming (well, they do, but not really anymore), and the song arrangements are very melodic most of the time. They're kind of the modern-day Iron Maiden. If you don't like them, then that may indicate one of two things: 1) you are just not a metal person, or 2) the things you like are much heavier, and you are MORE of a metal person.

As for Slayer, I totally understand. Actually, bands like The Dilinger Escape Plan are MUCH more anti-melodic, but Slayer being one of the precursors of death metal I understand.

That was probably one of the most beautiful arrays of words ever spoken, I wish more people thought that way.
Cheers :) Glad people feel the same way.

Also, props to the Escapist community for not being full of those elitist metal-types who bash everyone's taste saying "that's not metal". Me, I like to think I have a pretty good mix 'o metal in me: everything from Metallica to Killswitch Engage to In Flames to Eluvitie to System Of A Down to Deathklok and everything in between. And I'm still looking for new genres.
There's a few lurking round here alright but no-one pays much attention to them.

I like the metal bands that tend to have more of a melody. I love Protest the Hero, but I hate Cannibal Corpse. The way I see it, melody is one of the essential parts of music, so why pretty much ignore it? Sure, the rhythms are awesome, but you can only throw awesome rhythms at me for so long before I get bored. That's why breakdowns are perfect for me.

I have to say it. Metal really sucks. There's so much screaming you can't hear the words, and the guitar is always so distorted you can't hear a distinct melody. In the end, it's just noise.

On occasion, there will be some decent nu-metal, say, KoRn for instance, simply because it doesn't sound like a vomiting robot in your ear.
Heaven and Hell, Wintersun, Lord, Agalloch and Symphony X.

All five of those bands employ melodic singing. They're also very good.

Don't make judgements like that in future, please? :)

You know, Avenged Sevenfold are an anomaly to me... I love all kinds of metal, light, melodic, heavier stuff, really extreme stuff, industrial, black metal, pop metal... everything.

But I cannot for the life of me appreciate that band. I just hear it and it sounds so boring to me or something. Some of the riffs are good and stuff (Beast And the Harlot is a good example), but the guys voice just sounds like he's putting it on and makes me do a big 'MEH', as do the arrangements.

I know this has nothing to do with the music, but I also find their faces very, very punchable :D

What made me laugh is how he used Korn as an example of metal that doesn't sound like noisy screaming... clearly he's never heard their first 2 albums.

Maybe it's because all the metal I've listened to was forced upon me by my classmates but what I've heard is rarely "music" more like noise from an instrument. (Yes, I know it's the same thing, but I'm saying music is more...defined than noise). Or maybe I've just been listening to bad metal. Whatever the reason I don't enjoy it, and it does not make me happy.

Let's get some instrumental post-metal up in here.

Best thing I ever heard.
Don't get me wrong though, I absolutely love more "regular" metal (Dream Theater (ok maybe not so much regular), Metallica, Megadeth, In Flames, Children of Bodom, ... hate Slayer though), as well.

I guess what I adore about the genre is the variety of ways you can use mere 4-5 instruments and create such different experiences while still sounding somewhat alike. If that makes any sense.
I tend to prefer songs with intricate structures and melodies to pure balls to the wall aggression, too. And growls/screams aren't really my thing either. Stuff like In Flames is probably where I'd draw the line, and only because their riffs kick so much ass.
