I love metal, and Melodic Death Metal with clean vocals and screaming (like Before the Dawn). I've liked some Cannibal Corpse, but they're not something I put on when on the computer.
Death Metal is too much for me. I can listen to it and like it by all means, but it's not something I go out of my way to hear.
I suppose I understand the idea behind extreme metal but I don't like it myself. If you like that kinda thing then good for you, but I just find it uncomfortable to listen to, so I don't really go much heavier than Devildriver or Arch Enemy.
One of the things I love about metal is that it makes you uncomfortable for a bit - it steps you outside your comfort zone, gets you to think a bit more.
OT: I'm mostly into dark, heavy music. I can't stand the light metal, such as speed metal, power metal, and most thrash metal. I don't like Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Slayer etc. because they're too light and fast for me, they just go straight over my head, I don't feel anything. Really heavy music makes me feel it, almost physically, but emotionally and spiritually.
I love melodic death such as Opeth, Amon Amarth, Dark Tranquility and Arch Enemy, I love the contrast from the vocals and the other instruments. I'm not much into straight out death/black metal, usually fusion genres of either. I like Dimmu Borgir, symphonic black metal, first time I heard them they kinda scared me, but thats why I got into them, because for me the initial feeling of repulsion makes me want more. I like the rhythmic focus of industrial metal, mostly Rammstein, and a few other bits and pieces. Experimental metal is awesome, the likes of Meshuggah and later Tool. Progressive Metal is how I started listening to metal. I love Dream Theater, Opeth and Fracture. Random extreme metal bands I really like are Strapping Young Lad, Mnemic, and Children of Bodom. I also like straight out, simple heavy metal, such as Slipknot, Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch, Machine Head, Chimaira, etc.
I have October Rust, Dead Again and Bloody Kisses, just not listened to October yet. Though I think I will today! September Sun is by far my favorite song of theirs (or is it Christian Woman. Hmm. INSIDE OF HERRRRRRRRRRRRRR)
Oh man, October Rust!
Only heard of Type O after pete died. Someone mentioned October rust. I downloaded it (sorry) and it blew my mind. Certainly the best gothic metal album ever recorded. Don't like much of their other stuff =/
Also I wanna add my own stuff to this pile of awesomeness:
Bloodbath
Meshuggah!
Gojira
Also a big thing for me is the unspoken brotherhood of all metal fans, that a lot of people have discussed here.
How no matter what color or creed you are, you are welcome amongst us. Metal unites!
I don't really find myself in situations where I am forced to listen to it, so I'd say I'm indifferent. I enjoyed it when I was thirteen, but my tastes have radically shifted since then, as they do.
I've been mostly listening to Daft Punk, Deadmau5, stuff like that lately. Extreme metal, however, will always be one of my favourite genres, even though I do go through long periods of not listening to much of it, like at present.
I will listen to just about anything... conveniently this was playing as I clicked into this topic:
Do you 'get' extreme metal?
- Ayup, indeed I do.
Are you a fan? Are you indifferent? or does it make want to scream 'ARGH TURN IT OFF!'?
- I'm a fan. Though there have been occasions when a friend has played something for me and I've disliked it almost instantly. It's very hit and miss.
If you are a fan, tell us why and how it makes you feel to throw on some good old blast beats and death growls
- It's usually just to beat out some frustration at the end of a long work day. Different tunes for different moods.
Do you 'get' extreme metal?
Actually...I do. I find some of the lyrics amazing and actually inspiring in it's own little way. C:
Are you a fan? Are you indifferent? or does it make want to scream 'ARGH TURN IT OFF!'?
I am a huge fan. Half of my IPod is all metal/screamo/death metal. I find it a strange, amazing genre, better then alot of the others.
If you are a fan, tell us why and how it makes you feel to throw on some good old blast beats and death growls
To me, it makes me help cope with the depression I'm suffering from at the moment. Make's me feel better alot after a horrible bad day as well.
Yep: I'am a fan. Metal is an extremely diverse genre and I love to explore it as far as I can. Its also not like I'am only limited to metal here - I can pretty much listen to anything out there and find some gems that I can thoroughly enjoy. Diversity being the Keyword here: I love different styles and eccentric and varied compositions. I also love Epicness. And with metal being one of the most epic genres I know...well you get the idea
Here are some examples of extremely good metal I found during my travels in the Encyclopedia Metallum [http://www.metal-archives.com/]:
Partially yes, partially no. I'am personally more into the melodic stuff. To give you some quantitative perspective: I can go as far as the beginning of level 10 on Mohs scale of Rock and Metal Hardness [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MohsScaleOfRockAndMetalHardness]. Everything beyond gives me a hard time to get into if not making that nigh impossible...
Two examples that sort of depict the boundary of Hardness what I like:
If you are a fan, tell us why and how it makes you feel to throw on some good old blast beats and death growls
Hmmm....well: Music is great when you can connect to it in some way. This is also true for me and metal: The feelings it conjures being as diverse as metal itself is. For example:
I always associate with this song the flight over the surface of a sun: Heat. Primal Force. Pictures of the churning currents of plasma underneath...
And it works so well in conveying that picture: The hardness of the music, its title and its unrecognizable hard and unforgiving sounding vocals. As I see it (coined on my imagination that is), this song is a wonderful exemplification of the dangerous beauty of nature and of the hard and unforgiving part of life.
Then there is Metal where I can connect to the music even better by making use of the story or lyrics they have or the pictures they are trying to convey. This is the realm of epic music: My example here e.g. telling the story of the Illiad from the view of Cassandra. Its composition exemplifying her futile struggle to save Troy from destruction, the cruelty and primal force of war and despair in sight of the utter destruction of Troy[footnote]You might have noticed that I absolutely love this song [/footnote].
It works perfectly in conveying the conflicting emotions in Cassandra and the absurd and fatalistic reality that ensues. And you cannot help but share them if you know the story. I see it as some sort of catharsis.
I have to say it. Metal really sucks. There's so much screaming you can't hear the words, and the guitar is always so distorted you can't hear a distinct melody. In the end, it's just noise.
On occasion, there will be some decent nu-metal, say, KoRn for instance, simply because it doesn't sound like a vomiting robot in your ear.
I'm not completely sure what to classify as extreme, so it depends. If I wanted a massively solid wall of sound to block out everything I'd listen to it more. I get it, but I don't think most of the bands I listen to would be labelled extreme.
Are you a fan? Are you indifferent? or does it make want to scream 'ARGH TURN IT OFF!'?
Fan of some metal bands, indifferent to others, not intolerant to many sounds at all.
If you are a fan, tell us why and how it makes you feel to throw on some good old blast beats and death growls
I liked the atmospheric sound of synthy trance, the fastness of punk rock, double-kick, the rawness of grunge, adapted to screaming because of At the Drive-In and Finch, the melodies of well.. I don't know. Somehow I realised some of the elements of other types of music I liked could be found in metal and I realised it wasn't all stereotypically macho and dumb and nor was its fan base like that. I think I adapted to lots of things by noticing elements in something that I enjoyed and related to, and the other aspects grew on me and I branched out even more. I was also one of those geeky kids who carved swords out of wood and had fantasies of having adventures and being powerful, so I could relate to some of the themes in metal.
Also, metal is also one of the most diverse music genres. The lyrics are not all about sadism, violence, satan, or decapitated baby corpses. They can be personal, political, historical, mythical, and/or philosophical and they're reflected in the music itself, for example, merging a region's traditional instuments with metal and lyrics based around the myths of that region, or playing a more simplistic, driven, angry song with political lyrics like Sepultura. I appreciate the lyrics of the metal bands I listen to more than some of the superficial shit I see elsewhere.
In Flames was one of the first metal bands I liked. Songs like this, Zombie Inc., The Quiet Place, Touch of Red etc. which are heavy and intense but not very complex or harsh and with somewhat audible lyrics helped me adapt.
Egoism dictates human relations
A world where fashion outshines morality
Here success is written in blood-red colours
Designed by the thirst for power
Gather the faithful and propose a toast
To the epoch of indifference
An all to ordinary story
With aftertaste so bitter
Forced to be someone I don't want to be
I'm losing myself. sinking deeper down
I'm caught in the world wound web
A time represented by the void
An excuse without content
Stuck in the abyss of existence
With a content void of excuse
An all to ordinary story
This is my story
With an aftertaste so bitter
Sinking deeper down
I'm caught - I'm cage
I'm gone
A folk of cheeriness and strength
content with the life they lived
So-called barbarians yet with eyes cleered
for what they truly need and what damn not
free and plain
Barbarians, farmers and savages
counted as ignorant and uncivil
But told to bow before the emperors throne
they were at least not venal
True and plain freedom - of this natures clan
True and plain pride - of this celtic clan
True and plain dignity - Tegernako!
Not for riches, not for sway
not for economic benefits
met they the emperors requirements
for freedom can't be bought
Chaos A.D.
Tanks on the streets
Confronting police
Bleeding the plebs
Raging crowd
Burning cars
Bloodshed stars
Who'll be alive?!
Chaos A.D.
Army in siege
Total alarm
I'm sick of this
Inside the state
War is created
No man's land
What's this shit?!
Refuse/resist
Refuse
Chaos A.D.
Disorder unleashed
Starting to burn
Starting to lynch
Silence means death
Stand on your feet
Inner fear
Your worst enemy
Refuse/resist
Refuse/resist
As we build a brand new planet
Lets reconstruct and get it straight
Unlock forgotten skills
Travel to a new dimension
Souls from the dark seduction
(Take heed), we are the new invention
We're the settlers of year zero
Lets reconstruct and take it back
Leaders of our time
Heading for a downfall
The threshold of revolution
(Take heed)The last freedom call
Blanked out fire etched on the chrystal display
The seas are deep
You better swim
Don't go numb
Collect the word, add some gold and give it back
The seas are deep
You better swim
Don't go numb
From a thousand branches
Spreading the new voice
As we're heading for the throne
Connect, evolution will begin
This song reminds me of rain and grass and being carefree and alone.
Pale like the skull of the sun
The way of the hunting moon
O storms that reign supreme
The breeze comes whisperin' soon
Strike the flowers' last gleam
In spite of desperate fight, their power
Leave no shores where the torrents stream
Mountains highest hills
Fragments, beheaded formations
The cosmic rivers curse
Denial of all recreation
Wind, Water, Earth, Fire - Invincible!
Autumn-twice, Winter-thrice
River and Rock
A new kingdom rise
I close my eyes
What do I like about this? The pattern? It would be better if I knew enough about the psychology of why sounds effect emotions and some more music jargon so I don't sound like a rambling pseudo-intellectual.
The merging of pretty melodies with what sounds grating to the unaccustomed ear.
Maybe some people listen to metal because they're insecure and want to associate themselves with something stereotypically tough to compensate or comfort them? I don't know. Sometimes it's just escapism. Maybe it's just appreciating what people usually like in music but it's tinged with some kind of fascination with the strange, not easily made uncomfortable by the notion of shocking people?
Are you a fan? Are you indifferent? or does it make want to scream 'ARGH TURN IT OFF!'?
I listen to nearly everything under the metal & rock genre. 'So turn it up louder'
If you are a fan, tell us why and how it makes you feel to throw on some good old blast beats and death growls
Sure, just let me fetch some of my favorites.
But not all metal music is about aggressiveness, in fact most of it isnt, a good example being doom metal which is extremely slow and heavy music. Or atmospheric black metal, which is like normal aggressive black metal but it isnt about the aggressiveness, its about the atmosphere and the emotions. Also power metal, prog metal, etc.
Anyways, heres some brilliant metal songs, some more aggressive and some not:
