I agree with everything you just said. That said, I'm not a big fan of the more aggressive metal, like death metal. To me it seems like it's taken out everything you just said in favour of being shouty and making teenagers think it's cool. I'm looking at you, Papa Roach.
I think there can be grace in death metal, but it's rarely there any more. A good example I find of angry music also having meaning is Nine Inch Nails.
Even some of the death metal bands that do have meaning behind there work usually have a fan base of angsty 14 year olds who think it sounds cool, and the meaning gets lost.
For me there doesn't have to be a meaning to enjoy it. If it makes me ears happy that's enough for me, I don't need a deeper meaning to music to enjoy it!

Oh, and Papa Roach and death metal in the same sentence? Dude!
I get that, it's just that with death metal without any meaning it just feels pointless to me. Like violence and shouting without reason. I can understand the anger in the music if there is a reason for it, otherwise it just puts me off. Though sometimes it can sound good enough to not need a meaning behind it.
And I said Papa Roach with Death Metal because there's so many types of metal, I just stick with Death Metal for when people are shouting and Metal for when they aren't. Though classifying Papa Roach as metal at all is a bit of a stretch.

SHIT, didn't know you were a Type O fan at all. :D I got into them for all the wrong reasons (I only initially heard of them when Pete died) but I've become a really big fan recently.

That actually sounds a lot like 'I am the Black Wizards' by Emperor:

"I am the Black Wizards"?

HEY IHSAHN LEARN TO LITERACY

Funnily enough I could never really get into Emperor or any of the really famous (relatively) black metal bands. Darkthrone's recent stuff, Burzum and Ihsahn's solo stuff is about all I've been able to manage. Oh, and Nathrakh. I love harsh vocals but the black metal shriek or whatever it is isprobably my main problem with black metal, which is why I don't like Satyricon, Enslaved or Mayhem much. Which is funny, because Nathrakh have far more brutal vocals than any of them. O_O

I may not have known any of them but they all felt like they were my friend, which is something that I have never really felt any where else or from any other group of people.
You just eloquently summed up the real beauty of metal in a way my rambling original post could barely achieve.

Death metal without meaning is to me just.... fun, enjoyable noise I guess! In fact I never really listen to the lyrics in death metal unless they're particularly good (or audible, lol)

METAAAALLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! \m/

My favorite metal type is thrash (Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, early Metallica etc.), and I'm not too fond of black/death metal. I think it's just because I can't stand music where I can't understand what the fuck the singer is saying. I've got nothing against it, it's just a preference.

Although, I still love the starters of Metal, like Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath etc., and let's not forget Rush. I'm sort of weird about Rush. Some ass once said to me that Rush sucks... and he ended up in several different trash bags.

Is it just me, or are the inflections in the vocals the same as this song?
Definitely.

Doesn't matter how you got into them, the fact that you like them makes me happy! I LOVE Type O Negative and have done for going on 15 years now. October Rust was literally the soundtrack to my teenage years. What a masterpiece...

I suppose I understand the idea behind extreme metal but I don't like it myself. If you like that kinda thing then good for you, but I just find it uncomfortable to listen to, so I don't really go much heavier than Devildriver or Arch Enemy.

I'm a fan of a lot of metal (expecially Anthrax, if you can tell by the avatar), but there are certain genres I won't touch, like death or black metal. What I really love about Anthrax is they always do it with a smile, but they've still written songs [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyABEv2rvbw&feature=fvst] that [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDWhUHybp7g&feature=related] knock [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_yKpBPHJug&feature=related] the [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8miZRD5jW6M&feature=related] crap [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Us_IxW5LcvY&feature=related] out [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7_pytkPrlY&feature=related] of [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCN3uGx--Yg&feature=related] most [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wm9hBvjCMFY&feature=related] metal [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGHsxMqpL0c&feature=related] bands [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jAeZCUBVyA&feature=related]. I'm getting into the newer metalcore andstuff though; although there's a lot of balls in it (there is in all genres, especially metal subgenres), there's still awesome bands like Parkway Drive. But the more extreme stuff I can't really handle for more than about five minutes without it grating a lot.

Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness is the disc that got me to accept and enjoy harsh vocals, and I know that is true for a number of other people as well.

I still haven't properly listened to October Rust, TBH. Dead Again and Bloody Kisses have been occupying most of my time.

Metal is the greatest genre in the world, and my ears aren't satisfied if the guitars aren't distortioned, the drums aren't hammering the double bass, and the vocals don't sound like they're tearing their vocal chords apart.

My favorite bands I would say range from In Flames and Children of Bodom, to All That Remains and Trivium. I love melo-death and metalcore.

As for concerts, I love them. It's the best place for me to be, especially with good friends. The really good bands have such a great connection with their audience and there's a bond between the people there that just feels great. I usually don't participate in moshing since I weigh too little and have very weak muscles, but it's fun to watch.

Oh, and I myself am a growler in training. And a guitarist. And I have dreadlocks (although that last thing might change soon enough).
Excellent, two new bands for me to try. =] Already listen to In Flames and Children of Bodom.

I love metal, it comprises most of what I listen to. From Metallica and Megadeth, to Opeth and Katatonia, In Flames and Demon Hunter, Disturbed, SOAD, Dream Theater (Though many don't like DT)... It's beautiful. Although to be honest, I'm not a big fan of harsh vocals, I don't mind them most of the time, since the music is brilliant.

Yeah I get it, I guess =P
I'm a fan, as exemplified above.
Partly it's kind of an outlet for me, I think. I'm a very quiet, shy person, not terribly expressive of emotions. I think it's a way for me to make up for it. But mainly it just sounds awesome.

Best album they've made since Demanufacture. It was a very pleasant surprise to hear that last year!
Agreed. Ahhh, the excitement upon hearing Powershifter for the first time. :D

Also, while I'm here, some more black metal. :D

Perhaps I could find some soulful metal.

The funny thing about melo-death is that the emotional part usually doesn't appear until the choruses. But when that happens, my mind is in heaven.

Nice to see 'Only' in there. I love the John Bush-era Anthrax stuff, especially Sound Of White Noise. I know most fans prefer Joey but John's voice always felt more manly and metal to me!

Fave Anthrax song ever? Room For One More!

Oh, and I Am The Law too. Metal song about Judge Dredd - how awesome can one thing be?
