Psychobilly is really the only branch of metal I can get into. Everything else seems really kind of... soulless, & empty.
Again, I can understand how it would seem that way, but it is actually very soulful music and if you find the right bands, full of passion and all that good stuff.

I agree with everything you just said. That said, I'm not a big fan of the more aggressive metal, like death metal. To me it seems like it's taken out everything you just said in favour of being shouty and making teenagers think it's cool. I'm looking at you, Papa Roach.
I think there can be grace in death metal, but it's rarely there any more. A good example I find of angry music also having meaning is Nine Inch Nails.
Even some of the death metal bands that do have meaning behind there work usually have a fan base of angsty 14 year olds who think it sounds cool, and the meaning gets lost.

I like to actual hear some singing in songs, instead of people sounding like someone's ripping them apart.

So, no, not a fan.

But I could see how people could enjoy it - it definitely does get you jacked if you're into that thing. I am not into that thing so, for those purposes, I mainly listen to Hans Zimmer and whatnot.

Still, the guitar riffs in metal, even the most extreme kind, are rock solid.

For me there doesn't have to be a meaning to enjoy it. If it makes me ears happy that's enough for me, I don't need a deeper meaning to music to enjoy it!

Oh, and Papa Roach and death metal in the same sentence? Dude!

... care to demonstrate?
Sure!

Type O Negative - One of the more inventive and melodic metal bands. Their music always makes me think of forests, Springtime and hot girls. This song is from my all time favorite album by any artist, October Rust. (R.I.P. Pete)

Opeth - In particular 4.15 onwards... such beautiful, powerful emotional music with the atmospheric vocal harmonies.

Devin Townsend, probably my favorite musician in the whole world:

Tool can get a little too far up their own collective arse sometimes but this song never stops amazing me, Maynard's voice is so full of passion in it

Yeah, what I dont understand is when I tell someone I listen to metal and they say something like "Oh you must like Slipknot" or some other screamo band which is all the rage. As if this is the only type of metal which exists. It's such a pain in the ass.

Slayer is death metal?
I don't want to get into a pedantic debate about genres and sub-genres but while their music has more in common with Thrash metal, their subject matter often had them seen by many as a death metal band.

Some of my favourite ands are Slipknot and Children of Bodom (I also like pretty much every other type of metal - Iron Maiden, Metallica, Nightwish, Alestorm, Sabaton etc.) So I guess I 'get' metal. I just love the power in Death Metal - a nice headbang is good once in a while.

I also believe there is a type of metal for everyone, if they took the time to find it.

"Do you 'get' extreme metal?"

"Are you a fan? Are you indifferent? or does it make want to scream 'ARGH TURN IT OFF!'?"

"If you are a fan, tell us why and how it makes you feel to throw on some good old blast beats and death growls"

The sense of calm and well, "zen", as you so put it, I undergo when listening to tracks like the above is quite unlike anything else, to be honest.

I don't really enjoy the genre, as despite the music being cited as cathartic, catharsis is not always a good thing and I prefer something quiet. I could just turn the volume down, but, well, most metal fans seem to agree that it should be loud.

I was never really passionate about anything until I discovered metal. I love how huge and diverse the genre is despite the fact that 90% of people hear a Slipknot or Metallica track and regard the entire genre as pointless noise. Metal has taught me to look past the surface and explore what I'm not familiar with.It taught me that ugly music can be just as beautiful and sincere as if not more so than most other types of music. Now, as well as mu love for Black metal, power metal and progressive metal, I learned to branch out to other genres in the same way I do with metal.
I managed to fly over to another country ON MY OWN to a festival last year and came back with at least 50 friends who had something in common with me. A massive boost of confidence for myself? Yes it was.

To answer your questions though :

Do you 'get' extreme metal?

Of course. Sure I prefer melodic stuff like this:
But There are plenty of days when I just want something more fierce and aggressive like this:

What an adrenaline rush I get from bands like this!

Are you a fan? Are you indifferent? or does it make want to scream 'ARGH TURN IT OFF!'?

A massive fan willing to achieve arcane knowledge about the music. While I dislike some gory brutal death metal bands or grindcore I do appreciate it for what it is. Pure, concentrated, chaos.

If you are a fan, tell us why and how it makes you feel to throw on some good old blast beats and death growls?

The world is a shit place. It's constantly trying to remind you how redundant and pathetic you are. This kind of music...these powerful vocals stir something primitive inside me.Something empowering? Something that just makes me want to stand up and shout "FUCK YOU WORLD!AND FUCK YOUR CHILDREN!". Sometimes the world needs this kind of music.

Also, epic link. Carcass are brilliant :D

I like quite a bit of extreme metal, but thrash metal has a special place in my heart.

I enjoy a broad variety of metal and listen to it everyday at the moment listening to a combination of Disarmonia Mundi, In Flames, Turmion Kaitilot and Iron Maiden.

I have always found that it makes me feel happy no matter what the song is about. A lot of the time I pay attention to a specific part of the song at a time so one time it might be the guitar another it could be the drums. The way the lyrics are sung has never really bothered me except when they are well beyond decipherable.

I have only been to two concerts in my life and both of them were last year when I saw AC/DC and Metallica. One of the things I found amazing was the camaraderie of the 50,000 or however people surrounded me. I the 17 year old from the country who was completely alone in a giant crowd but that didn't matter we were all there for the same reason and all were equal and had a great time. I may not have known any of them but they all felt like they were my friend, which is something that I have never really felt any where else or from any other group of people.

These two were the best. The first didn't sound like metal at all.

They all still felt very flat & lifeless.

I'll give you an example of metal I like:

PSYCHOBILLY SNIP]
That song was cool. I liked when it broke into the double tempo in the middle.

You might enjoy Primus:

They are a very cool band and not a lot of people know that it was them who made the South Park theme.

You really know your stuff MiracleOfSound, all these songs you posted are really good.

I'm not a fan of any genre (maybe progressive rock), I just listen to anything that has a good melody or riff, even black metal like Deathspell Omega. However, I never really understood why people could get so stuck into it so thanks for the info.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39a-XD6D67I - if you haven't heard them before :)

I have to say though, I prefer good singing to screamo.
