Judging by the reactions of almost everyone here (including me) I guess you're wrong, OP.

Yea, Im insanely good at math, sometimes being called a human calculator, but I really suck at language arts
The weird part is, that in math there are more girls and in in language/English there are more guys
Maybe its just me, or Everything i different at my school
The reason I saw this in my school was because the guys tended to be very lazy and thus Language Arts was less work and overall easier than math.

And I fall in the crowd of being more in touch language skills than math, and I'm a programmer by trade...and I can't stand math...I should get a new trade maybe....

I'm not very good at math. I try but I always screw up even when I think I know what I'm doing

The behavioral perspective is that there is no inherent psychological difference and that any difference is the result of cultural conditioning- that girls are encouraged to develop communication skills early in life (I.E. to play "tea parties" and so on) whereas boys are encouraged to develop logical skills with games like football (calculation of angles, choosing the correct team-mate to pass to, etc.) However, based on personal experiance (as the topic post seems to be), I have never noticed a difference of this kind. Other posters seem to agree.

I was always the math guy growing up, but I love language arts/English/creative writing. I'm good at math but I hate it; I love writing but I suck at it. I don't think I even used that semicolon in the previous sentence properly.

Interesting topic, it's one I think about in my spare time now and then. I've found that pretty much any specifically female feature can be lead back to the fact that they give birth - which has essentially pushed them into the raising-the-child function which has led them to develop a less agile body but a better susceptability to everything that has to do with communication and emotions.

As to why guys are better in math... Maybe it's because men are more logical than women in that they tend to go straight for their target rather than trying to 'lure' others into giving them what they need to know (Yes "I am so fat!" ladies, I'm talking about you!). It's something I'll have to give more thought, anyway.

As a disclaimer: yes, I realize that single mothers aren't per definition "more emotionally evolved" than men or such. Obviously each person differs and not everything I'm stating there works right here and now. I'm thinking evolution, something that has come into being over the course of ten thousands of years.

I once read somewhere, about guys and grey brain matter, and girls and white brain matter, but I can't remember what all it was talking about.

There are mental differences between men and women, but genes, and development can disclose anything, I think.

For counter examples, which a lot of people are giving; a girl in my class got a bunch of math things right or something, and she even got a certificate or something from the University of Waterloo.

Not bad for a 14-year-old. Not the most amazing feat evar, but not bad.

In my math classes (top level not to brag or anything) theres only 1 girl (same girl in both classes)and in my english (top again but I'm really not bragging. Sorry if it looks like I am) the class is predominately female. Coincidence? I think not!

Unless your a christian. Then it hasnt been happening at all. BTW, evolution only works if it helps to pass on the genes, and i dont see how emotions would help women pass on their genes.

Male reporting in. Good at language arts, bad at math (and by extension, the sciences, though I at least find those more interesting because they're examples of applied math, as opposed to math for math's sake).

What if one is decent at both? Are they a hermaphrodite?

EDIT--*checks for penis* No, I suppose not.

It's almost as if people are individuals with variation in aptitudes that dwarfs any correlation between those aptitudes and gender, but who might focus on subjects they think that they would be good at because of the social expectations of their gender.

I dunno, I can safely say I'm pretty good at both LA and Math.

Well DUH. Let this XKCD comic illustrate how it works.

I was originally going to post the one about Oregon, but I figured this one was more relevant to the topic.
