I am thinking of getting the Steambox, but the Steambox IS (whether you like it or not) a console, PC gamers. It has a controller, and you plug it into your TV. The only reason I am getting it, is because I'm to poor to afford a massive gaming tower. I play on a business laptop with a decent graphics card and processor. But you can play with a mouse and keyboard. SO - It will be cheaper than a vamped up PC, It will run games fine, and I can still use my keyboard. Not to mention righteous steam sales. Win -Win.
Thoughts?

I probably won't be buying one because I already have an xbox 360 for my living room and a gaming pc for my not living room. And when I eventually get an xboxone for my living room then I really really won't have a reason to get a steam box.

But I'll probably get a steam box anyways because I am just that white... and they look cheep and interesting so I'll just have a bunch of extra consoles huddled around my tv.

Also being a '100% PC Elitist' on a business laptop is... um... not really.

I'll probably get one. I haven't been able to do a lot of PC gaming on account of my computer being too old, wimpy, and pathetic to really play any of the new games coming out, and I can't afford to upgrade it. Not to mention, it is too big to really fit anywhere. As a result, my Steam library is feeling really lonely right now, and I've been wanting to get back to it but can't because of the aforementioned computer problems.

I won't be buying one because my current PC can handle all my needs, gaming or otherwise, and because I don't even HAVE a TV.

Steambox = PC. literally you can build one today. Here's what the prototype units consist of:

GPU: Some units with NVidia Titan, some GTX780, some GTX760, and some GTX660
CPU: Some boxes with Intel i7-4770, some i5-4570, and some i3
RAM: 16GB DDR3-1600 (CPU), 3GB GDDR5 (GPU)
Storage: 1TB/8GB Hybrid SSHD
Power supply: Internal 450w 80Plus Gold

SBox will be no cheaper than a similar speced pc as i'm sure its off the shelf parts, will be as powerful as you wanna buy (probably not starting under 600 bucks) the only difference is they have a controller, use the free steam os(which you can put on anything) and use a small case.

If you cant afford a gaming pc you can't afford steambox because they are the same damn thing.

PC has controllers and you can plug it into your tv too. And if you are too poor to afford a massive gaming tower, then im very sorry to say that the steam box will not be cheap, and you can make a gaming tower with the same performance of the steambox for a cheaper price.

I won't because I already have a gaming PC... and I don't really see the need for another, smaller one that can do less stuff?

I already HAVE a Steambox, it's called a PC. I have a console for most of my gaming needs and I have a PC for other stuff. I'm good

That is actually really interesting. But the towers i see are around 1000 dollars? I dont know. Not a tech savvy. I pictured the Steambox costing around the same as the next gen consoles.

There are many towers, all with different specs and prices. Steambox will be the same. There is not "one" Steambox, there are several, all, with different specs and prices too. But they will not ever be cheaper than a PC with the same specs and performance. Why? First, because there will be no commercial steambox from valve, only from other companies. This companies will not receive a single cent from game sales, so they cannot sell the hardware at a cost like console companies do. Second, they will try to keep the size of the steam box relatively small, which increases the costs further.

So, no, they are not a cheaper option and you will be able to find PCs with better specs and performance than a steam box of the same price.

And a steambox price the same as the next-gen consoles(say, 400$) will undoubtedly run worse than the consoles.

I won't. Already have a PC. And if I want to try the SteamOS I'll just set up a duel boot.

I have no idea because the things aren't out yet and we know barely anything about them.

Seriously, we don't even know what games are going to come out for it, and yet I've already heard people talking about how they're going to preorder one as soon as they can. Just wait until they tell us more about them before we rush to any conclusions, okay?

That being said, I find the Steam box very intriguing. It's one of the only dramatically different hardware initiatives that I've seen in years, and whether or not I actually get one, that's enough to make me pay attention.

If the Steambox is still around in 3-5 years and has proven itself, and the majority of games sold on Steam can be played directly off the Steam OS instead of through streaming, then I may consider picking one up. As it is now, though, there are far too many questions regarding its capabilities.

If Steam can't convince most of the publishers to start porting their legacy games (not to mention new releases) over to Linux, I just don't see a long-lasting future for the Steambox -- streaming technology can only go so far, and absolutely no one I know is interested in a console that requires a secondary PC in order to get a fulfilling experience out of it.

It's cheaper to build yourself. The Steambox is likely to cost the same as a pre-built, so you're probably looking at nearly $1000. It's using off-the-shelf parts and can't be sold at a loss as the manufacturers will make nothing from the games like Sony, Nintendo and MS do.

Even if you do self-build, the cost of entry to PC gaming is higher than consoles; it's just made up for later by having cheaper games.

Thanks for the insight, guys.
If what you say is true, and undoubtedly it is, I will look into building my own PC soon.
Any tips?
I admit I am complete noob when it comes to hardware, etc.

Honestly I'd put it off a year building a pc. Nvidia brings out their new line of gfx cards (the gtx 8xx)in 2014 and we'll see how amds mantle thing works out. Plus it'll be good to wait and see how much if any videocard ram increases since the consoles got a jump and if 8 cores are the future or you can get by rocking the quad cores.

Plus waiting a year pc HW gets even cheaper.

PC gaming always get a little weird around new console releases i'd just ride it out till next year

I already have a PC and will have at least one next gen console. I don't really need one.
