Why, or why not will you be purchasing the steam box?

I think the idea behind steam box is along with Big Picture to present to the dirty console playing peasants to with the best and most awesome thing evar. The ease of buy this console you can play this consoles games and the nice simple interface with the customer friendly, if diretide-less, Steam service. I think building a gaming PC is scary from some people because they are...lets just say dumb, and think its very expensive to get into the gaming PC world because of companies like Alienware charging ridiculous amounts of dosh for their computers.

I don't have a TV, my computer works fine and can be upgraded, so no steam box for me.

I probably wont since I go just fine with a Windows PC, the Steambox looks more suited for people that are more used to consoles (no troubleshooting, etc...).

A friend of mine that I play with on Xbox is interested since it opens up for the older PC titles and reduced game prices for him but for now we still have to see how things actually go.

He isnt used to the troubleshooting and keyboard+mouse so he never really got the motivation to get a gaming PC but if the Steambox streamlines the process enough he might get it. I am also curious if the Steam Controller will work on Windows (probably right?), it could be a great replacement for the standard Xbox 360 controller that while a very good controller still has to rely on the compatibilitie of the game.

It has nothing to do with being dumb, some people just like to buy a game, put it in the tray and start playing with without needing to mess around with things, you certainly know that with a lot of games (even with Steam) you cant just install, launch and press new game, you have to go to the options, see if everything is running properly (framerates, resolution, etc...), most likely there will be some random ass issue that you will have to google for a fix (its easy and there is usually one).

I might (make that probably will) get one because although I have a gaming PC, it's not the greatest and I would like to be able to play games on a TV, which I can already do but you have to set it up and plug in HDM1 cables and annoying stuff like that.

And I also have no interest in any consoles right now, so there's not much competition on that front.

As with all new products it's better to wait a year to let the rich people suffer the problems and then maybe purchase it when the worst of the problems are fixed. But to be honest i can't see many PC only games coming out that are actually worth the purchase...all the PC/console multiplatform games i've played at other peoples houses have run worse on a PC but looked nicer than the consoles and i'm all about the gameplay over aesthetics.

i wont i have a £1500 gaming rig, and i dont have a couch or a tv so consoles dont have a lot of appeal for me
but i will be hoping it does well and will adopt the OS at the first real possibility

I won't because I could get a new mobo and CPU for my current PC and have it turn out cheaper and better than buying a Steambox.

yeah I have a bitchin gaming pc set up on my tv with an hdmi cable and a 360 controller hooked to it which sight unseen I like more than the steam controller. maybe holding one would change my mind but the steam controller just looks awkward as hell to me in photo form. so I already have a steam box essentially.

because i like to play video games while slouching on thew couch and i want to take a nose dive in to the next generation. but the ps4 is still a bit iffy in my eyes and the xbox one is... well, it's the xbox one. Not to mention that steam has been nice to me for so many years that i fully trust them.

As others have already said the Steambox is essentially a small form-factor, prebuilt PC for the living but still a normal PC.

You can find many build tutorials on youtube including many that focus on a certain price point. Just search on youtube: how to build a pc for *insert price pointer here*.

Well, my desktop has better specs than the steambox, and the only time I ever use a console is for driving games...
And since GT6 is coming in December, that's all I'll use it for...
So, yeah... don't want one, don't need one...

I need a SteamBox as much as any other console... not really, I have a PC and this thing does it all.
However putting together a PC and then setting it up is no joke, yes once you have a huge repository of knowledge this is easy but for people who don't know how and more so don't want to learn PC gaming is one hella scary place.

So for people who don't want to climb past that PC entry point there is SteamBox, and for people who want even less work then that there are consoles.

Yes I'm probably going too buy a steam box just because I really dislike the new consoles . And it will be nice too play some of my steam games on my tv without moving my tower.

I won't be getting one as my computer still has a few teeth and runs what it needs to run (although I've not tested it with many new games). It is a nice idea, but I'd wait a year after release (If I was getting one) to let most of the major bugs be ironed out, not to mention, it'd be cheaper to build your own PC and you could probably get better parts as well for around the same price, I built mine, and while I had my brother walk me through most of it, I managed.

The steam box isn't a console.

Please, everyone who is confused repeat this a million times before posting in the future.

The Steam Machine will be specialized gaming PCs. If you want you could even install Windows on it or you can download SteamOS on a normal PC. We don't even know which specs we can expect or the price point of them. You can build one yourself, you can use the controller (which they announced will be compatible with all Steam games).

Valve isn't making a new console, they are simply joining the market of prebuilt computers and releasing it along with a new OS.

I already have a PC for gaming and everything else (well, two actually, one is just for rendering/processing/gaming).

Admittedly these two have rather dated Athlon II X4 quadies but they are still good for the most part. I don't use LCD's for my main PC, but my render PC is hooked up to an LG TV that has a multitude of connections. Plus I don't want to use another heavy CRT on the rather dodgy-looking piece of furniture my LCD is on.

I'm very tempted, Because I'm so done with Windows 8. At home, i have a perfectly powerful and stable tower that's a little difficult to take to University with me, And it'll only be a matter of time before they start phasing out 7 and forcing an upgrade to 8. Now there is a way out that let's me keep my steam library, Yes Please!

I'm definitely considering getting a Steam Box because frankly the next gen consoles have all hugely disappointed me and I don't think any of them is worth my money in their current state (and that's coming from someone who's predominantly been a console gamer since I got into games). Steam sales are infinitely better than the sales you see on PSN or the Microsoft store and the selection of games that's available will be huge from launch (unlike the 20 or so games Sony and Microsoft seem to think is an acceptable reason to buy new hardware). Plus, depending on their system, I might finally be able to play all my 'investment' purchases - games that I can't run on my current hardware but were too cheap to resist.

If I don't get one it'll most likely be because of the price point or possibly because offline play is not possible/ as buggy as Steam on PC. If the price of the console is too high then I'll just save up a little longer and finally bite the bullet and build my own desktop. If I can't play offline then half the convenience of getting a console instead of a new PC disappears so again I may as well just move away from console gaming permanently. There are probably a plethora of other reasons/ issues that could come up but those are the two dealbreakers I can forsee potentially putting me off a Steam Box. Of course there's also the chance that if the PS4 slim comes out before then it might have fixed/ improved the issues that put me off it and then I'll just get that instead (especially if backwards compatibility is brought in) but that seems about as likely as Sega coming back with a new megadrive at this point.
