Well Why even put the game out if its just gonna be a blatant copy of the console version? Maybe all the game devs can just say FUCK PC those cunts, all those jerks stealing our hard work. You have to look at the problem, find a way so piracy is hard to pull off, this locked down version of a "game" isn't going to help.

And who is to say that more people won't start pirating on Xbox hell if you just gonna get the same game on your Pc why not play it on your hacked Xbox. its side stepping a pot whole and falling off a bridge (i think i've watched ZP to much).
Because PC demand won't be particular elastic. Basically they'll be looking at a small sales decrease from the vocal minority that won't buy it on the PC because of the reduced attention it got at development stage.

In terms of costs, fully pimping the PC version would cost a lot more than the sales increase they'd get for it. Pimp the PC product and cut profit, even if your hard sales numbers go up. I suspect that's what's happened.

Its simple, IW dont have to listen to us.

They have a game which is gunna sell a lot more then the original (i bloody hope it doesnt), so they can afford to give us nought and increase the price. Its simple business at the end of the day and although it is easy to say "O im not going to buy it" there will be 4 others that probably will.

Just sucks for all us people at University with really weird internet connections, there's no way that we will be able to play multilayer.

how are any of these changes supposed to change piracy? no lean? P2P? no mods? no clans? 9 v 9 max? no kicking? how exactly does that have anything to do w/ piracy?

you know 360 is also very prone to piracy too (the game has been leaked for like a week or 2 on it already).
That's got nothing to do with preventing piracy just costing for it. What its about it the cost returns of PC optimisation. Why spend the development time and money when half the consumer base will just try and steal it anyway.

http://www.tweakguides.com/Piracy_4.html

This article has figures showing the scale of piracy on the 360 is approximately 10% of the that of the PC in terms of total numbers. Given the actual sales figures:

http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/50951 said:
Of the overall figure, North American sales of the Xbox 360 version accounted for 3.04 million. The PC version, meanwhile, only sold 383,000 units at North American retailers, though that number does not include sales made through digital distribution platforms such as Steam.
So treating these as non-realistic but indicative comparative figures:

360 Sales: 3.04 million
360 Piracy: 59,000 (in a one month period)

PC Sales: 383,000
PC Piracy: 566,000 (in a one month period)

Is it really a shock that the IW have seen its returns forecast and looked at the cost of re-tweeking for the PC, and decided, fuck PC gamers?
I think the fact that he also has PS3 pirated versions at 52k DLs shows his methodology is wrong. Because PS3 games can't be pirated. (i doubt he also included the private trackers & newsnet which is where the majority of console games are pirated)

Sort of like he's counting the DVD DL (which makes up half the piracy numbers he's listed) as piracy, when in fact the DVD image that he listed isn't a cracked version and wont work w/o a key. The numbers he's seeing is just how many ppl DLed the torrent. If you've ever paid attention to piracy court cases you would realize that a large number of DLs of torrents are made by companies who actively try to interfere w/ their functioning.

They also completely ignore Digital Distribution. You can't buy 360 or PS3 games online. But DD has become equal w/ retail in sales. CoD4, for example, has been among STEAM & D2D's best selling list since the beginning. PC games are also not sold to video rental stores; a market which makes up a not-insignificant portion of console game sales.
The figures aren't to be taken as actual but indicative of scale. A huge number of people, comparably, try to pirate games in the PC market. Even doubling the figure sales figures from the PC the 360 version alone out sells it four times over, without the PS3 sales being taken into account!

And regarding how the developer feels:

http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/50748

Actual or not, the CoD4 guys were understandably upset that everyone and their mum tried to half-inch CoD4. So if the PC gaming community is demanding stuff on one hand then nicking it with the other, I'm not surprised IW didn't just post Soap's stiff British middle finger to all its PC fanboys.
Regardless, it still sold A LOT on PC.

w/ Digital Download i would guesstimate a million copies. At an average of $40 a pop that's 40 MILLION DOLLARS. Assuming it would have cost them even 1/160th ($250k) of that to make the game the way PC gamers like? Because they're going to lose probably 1/2 or 3/4 of their sales because of their design decisions. If anything the game will be pirated MORE.

p.s. I take OFFENSE at your referring to PC gamers as "PC Fanboys". Fanboys are irrational, PC gamers are traditionally an older less irrational group of gamers. PC Enthusiasts is a more accurate term.

Why can't they have both? By doing this to the multiplayer, they are just ENCOURAGING piracy. If the Muliplayer for PC is going to be changed to this extent, there are many who won't want to play the multiplayer at all. And if they don't want to play the multiplayer, what's stopping them from pirating (aside from morals of course).

I am buying MW2, on steam where it is much cheaper (at least it's cheaper in Australia). I only found out about the 18 player limit recently, and I am very tempted to cancel my pre-purchase, beacause playing on 18P servers is not interesting to me. I've played on 18 player servers before and I found the matches to be boring and under-populated. Plus, I want to play against people with good Ping. I don't want to run up to someone and find that they've magically teleported behind me, or see players disappearing only to reappear a few steps ahead.

I know IW have the console market right now, and nothing I do or say can change their decision to do this. All I can say is that if they do not allow us to filter other players based on ping before matchmaking, I will not be playing the multiplayer for very long and I will not buy another one of their products. That probably doesn't matter to them. But there you have it.

Moriarte: Ignoring IW.net, is the PC version a direct port of the console version?

Mackey-IW: No, PC has custom stuff like mouse control, text chat in game, and graphics settings.

ARE THEY FUCKING WITH US?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?
It's like they're just a bunch of trolls. Cause, ya know, PC games don't have mouse control if they are still ports or anything.

Funny how its being a fanboy when its your platform. Hell I'm 24 and love playing games on PCs, its more about your estimate regarding sales.

I'll bet you a hefty sum that PC sales will be barely effected by the controversy. A 10% drop in what they could be is probably an extreme. And do you know how I know? Because its exactly the sum that IW probably did to judge whether it was worth putting in a an extra $1m to generate a few thousand extra sales.

There have been a lot of people arguing the importance of these changes. (many of whom are console gamers and maybe are insulted PC gamers don't want the console experience)

ArsTechnica has written an EXCELLENT article explaining clearly why all this matters. If you'd like to know, it's def worth a read (or at least a skim).

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2009/11/pc-modern-warfare-2-its-much-worse-than-you-thought.ars

even if you aren't a PC gamer now, if you think you ever may be in the future this is important.

What do you all think?

Console gamers, can you empathize w/ PC gamers?

PC gamers, does this article worry you about the future of PC gaming?
Want to know what I think?

I'm a console gamer, and I think that anyone who is flaming PC gamers for complaining about whats happening is being pig fucking ignorant.

I'm so sick of this 'if you're not happy just don't buy it' attitude. It's not that simple and anyone with half a brain should know better.

People look forward to things, they get excited. Of course they're going to be upset when it's a let down.

Finally! A person that speaks sense! People who say "If you don't like it don't buy it" are massive idiots with a brain the size of a peanut.

Anyways, I'm pretty sure that more and more companies are going to be doing shit like this. Thank heavens there is Valve... This is just my opinion, but seriously people, playing an fps on a console? Really? I couldn't enjoy that even if it had the best story or graphics ever created! I don't know, the analog stick aiming is so... clunky!

They're attempting something new by making it identical to the console version? I think that may have been done before somewhere.

I personally thinks this is a very bad idea but as I wont be playing it (L4D2) I'm not really bothered. :D

How is it a bad estimate? For one, PC games are more often bought at places the NPD doesn't count. GameStop may sell/stock tons of console games (because they profit off ppl trading them back in, PC games cant be traded in); but they dont sell many PC games unless u pre-order them. Steam on the other hand had over 20 million users as of the beginning of this year. Compare that to Xbox Live for instance who had just hit that mark in may. And steam is a hub for buying major releases (unlike xbox); how can you not conclude that a LARGE amount of sales occur there (& D2D), sales which don't get accounted for.

I don't understand all the crying when no one has even tried the changes. If you play it for a while and it sucks, then is the time to ***** about it. Right now all you guys are doing is crying over nothing.

I prefer playing with a controller myslef, it's less precise but it just feels more comfortable on my hands and the 360 triggers give an extra layer of immersion, as it's like firing a gun.

I still maintain that PC users have every right to be pissed off over this. Just like I'm pissed off that I won't be able to chat to my friends without some stupid homphobic racist assholes llistening in on us.

ahaaaa hahahahaaaa... are u serious? Maybe you should read the first post again. Practically the whole PC COD experience people loved is being thrown out of the window. That is why people are so irritated.

This is a lazy port from a console with "stuff like mouse control, text chat in game, and graphics settings."

All IW want is to make money, not appease gamers fantasies about what this game could have been. I understand that, my problem is that they seem to be removing features and 'dumbing' the whole game down.

It can't be that they were trying to prevent piracy, because they are now using steam. I don't know. Have they provided a reason? Sorry if this is common knowledge but why did they change to match-making?

I see where they're coming from, "make it equal for everyone", but scaling down the PC version isn't the right thing to do.

All those things they've cut out are fun things.

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Please IW, don't be such pricks. Just because Codemasters have done this with OpFlash 2 (which i do like, but don't tell them that :p ) doesn't mean you can do this with MW2.

The PC community is nothing without mods, dedicated servers, tweaks, hosting control, console commands and large online battles. This would make the PC just a very expensive and large console.

Well, at least IW have made up my mind for me. I AM NOT BUYING THIS GAME.

Well you know what...if you don't like it then you don't have to buy it or play it (sorry if you don't want to hear that but I'm afraid those are your options).

You have plenty of other games avalible so why does it matter if one doesn't quite live up to your expectations? (I think that all of this fuss around MW2 confirms what myself and a few others have often said in that PC gamers are no longer the center of attention or master race of the gaming world anymore, your significance in the greater scheme of things has gone down)

I normally don't care about the differences between PC and console games (in my opinion, I like both platforms but don't like the players) but the points that have been made supposedly elevating the PC above the sonsole make me ask the following:

If the PC has such a vast superiority when it comes to shooting games then surely the downfalls in this one should be inconsiquential? You should (in theory) have a vast collection of other games that you can choose from and choose to ignore MW2 altogether.
