There have been a lot of people arguing the importance of these changes. (many of whom are console gamers and maybe are insulted PC gamers don't want the console experience)

ArsTechnica has written an EXCELLENT article explaining clearly why all this matters. If you'd like to know, it's def worth a read (or at least a skim).

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2009/11/pc-modern-warfare-2-its-much-worse-than-you-thought.ars

even if you aren't a PC gamer now, if you think you ever may be in the future this is important.

What do you all think?

Console gamers, can you empathize w/ PC gamers?

PC gamers, does this article worry you about the future of PC gaming?

The best thing to do is just wait and see. If it's shite then people will never do it again, if it's good then maybe it's a new step in PC gaming. Sometimes you have to be patient and wait. Although they could have chosen a lesser awesome game to sacrifice for this experiment.

I can understand why people are angry. But, I also think that one game won't make all game designers do what IW did either.

It's not like it's never been done before. Operation Flashpoint has it too and it's horrible.

The game can't change the way the internet works.

p.s. Read the article, you'll see what i mean ;P

I hope so. But RAGE is also considering doing it too apparently.

Now DICE & EA are still firmly against it, which is nice. I'll be pre-ordering BFBC2 for that reason (as well as the awesome destructible environment).

I'm a PC gamer and have been for about 3 years now. The fact that i've played many PC games and they were mainly hosted by other plays have there troubles. But you get used to it after a while, with alot of games i've played the game used to close down when the host left which was annoying. But as HUBILUB said, its better to wait.

The fact the market is smaller and more prone to piracy means the returns for companies are lower. Accept the change and pray for mice/keyboards to be added to consoles.

For the biggest budget games, consoles are just going to be the standard now. I'm sorry, you can piss and moan about it as much as you want but its not going to change the fact.

how are any of these changes supposed to change piracy? no lean? P2P? no mods? no clans? 9 v 9 max? no kicking? how exactly does that have anything to do w/ piracy?

you know 360 is also very prone to piracy too (the game has been leaked for like a week or 2 on it already).

Naysayers have been saying that PC gaming has been on the verge of dying out for years now. It's simply not true.

Anyone else think that the PC version is a DIRECT copy of the console version with absolutely no difference. I mean Dedi servers is okay to an extent but no leaning, now thats just lazy

That's got nothing to do with preventing piracy just costing for it. What its about it the cost returns of PC optimisation. Why spend the development time and money when half the consumer base will just try and steal it anyway.

http://www.tweakguides.com/Piracy_4.html

This article has figures showing the scale of piracy on the 360 is approximately 10% of the that of the PC in terms of total numbers. Given the actual sales figures:

http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/50951 said:
Of the overall figure, North American sales of the Xbox 360 version accounted for 3.04 million. The PC version, meanwhile, only sold 383,000 units at North American retailers, though that number does not include sales made through digital distribution platforms such as Steam.
So treating these as non-realistic but indicative comparative figures:

360 Sales: 3.04 million
360 Piracy: 59,000 (in a one month period)

PC Sales: 383,000
PC Piracy: 566,000 (in a one month period)

Is it really a shock that the IW have seen its returns forecast and looked at the cost of re-tweeking for the PC, and decided, fuck PC gamers?

Although, one might argue here-in lies a very good example of a symptom of that death.

I don't think anyone truly believe it will die but it won't surprise me if the PC market stops getting treated like some glorious elite that need to be pandered to, and will start being treated like everyone else in terms of big-budget games.

I think the fact that he also has PS3 pirated versions at 52k DLs shows his methodology is wrong. Because PS3 games can't be pirated. (i doubt he also included the private trackers & newsnet which is where the majority of console games are pirated)

Sort of like he's counting the DVD DL (which makes up half the piracy numbers he's listed) as piracy, when in fact the DVD image that he listed isn't a cracked version and wont work w/o a key. The numbers he's seeing is just how many ppl DLed the torrent. If you've ever paid attention to piracy court cases you would realize that a large number of DLs of torrents are made by companies who actively try to interfere w/ their functioning.

They also completely ignore Digital Distribution. You can't buy 360 or PS3 games online. But DD has become equal w/ retail in sales. CoD4, for example, has been among STEAM & D2D's best selling list since the beginning. PC games are also not sold to video rental stores; a market which makes up a not-insignificant portion of console game sales.

Moriarte: Ignoring IW.net, is the PC version a direct port of the console version?

Mackey-IW: No, PC has custom stuff like mouse control, text chat in game, and graphics settings.

ARE THEY FUCKING WITH US?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?

Well Why even put the game out if its just gonna be a blatant copy of the console version? Maybe all the game devs can just say FUCK PC those cunts, all those jerks stealing our hard work. You have to look at the problem, find a way so piracy is hard to pull off, this locked down version of a "game" isn't going to help.

And who is to say that more people won't start pirating on Xbox hell if you just gonna get the same game on your Pc why not play it on your hacked Xbox. its side stepping a pot whole and falling off a bridge (i think i've watched ZP to much).

in short yes, in long YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS its there way of saying you have customization but not saying that its only a little.

Well just think a cool game mode were you can make the screen black with the custom graphic controls and then play. seems perfect to me, what more could you want?

It still sounds like people are acting like IW just killed and raped their moms. seriously though people need to realize IW is just attempting something new.Gaming will never evolve if people whine over everything thats different.

The figures aren't to be taken as actual but indicative of scale. A huge number of people, comparably, try to pirate games in the PC market. Even doubling the figure sales figures from the PC the 360 version alone out sells it four times over, without the PS3 sales being taken into account!

And regarding how the developer feels:

http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/50748

Actual or not, the CoD4 guys were understandably upset that everyone and their mum tried to half-inch CoD4. So if the PC gaming community is demanding stuff on one hand then nicking it with the other, I'm not surprised IW didn't just post Soap's stiff British middle finger to all its PC fanboys.
