A few things... first of which being I've skipped most [all] of this thread, so I'm not replying to anyone other than the OP really.
People say Sony "stole" the Achievements idea off X-Box. I say it's throwing a fat kid into a lake to see if he swims. Why risk time and money testing an idea if your rivals can take the risk for you? It happens in the real world too; Composite Doors used to be pretty hard to find, but now one of the big Door manufacturers is backing them every door fabricator and his granny make them.
Personally, I think it's jealousy. The worst technical fault you can level at the Playstation and its successors is that, in the PSX and PS2, the 1st edition version of each console tended to have disk reader problems in later life. This meant that about halfway through the console's life expectancy, you had to have a major overhaul, or ditch it and buy a new one.
By the time my PSX died, I could pick up a replacement for £40. My PS2 is struggling (not "dying", not yet at least), but I have a PS3 now so in theory Sony is happy. I have moved on. Plus, I'm obviously going to buy a new PS2 when mine DOES die, because I can play PSX / PS2 games on it but not the PS3.
Would anyone care to make a list of faults the X-Box / 360 suffers from? Would it be quicker to list what works? Hmm... can we say "the casing" without someone proving us wrong?
I have never liked the X-Box. When it came out, I was firmly rooted in Sony / Nintendo, and dismissed the X-Box as overpriced crap that would soon tank and die. By the time the X-Box finally got a reputation worth spitting on, I still wasn't interested because the N64 was on the way out and I was debating whether I should move on to the Gamecube.
The 360 was duly ignored by me, partly because I still considered the X-Box not worth the time and effort (if I couldn't get it on PS2, I could get it on PC).
Now the PS3 is in my possession, I DEFINATELY don't consider the 360 worthwhile. I've just shelled a lot of cash on a new console, so I won't be buying another for a long while.
Is this irrational hatred of the X-Box unfounded? Probably, but frankly I don't care. I am by no means a "Sony Fanboy"; I chose Sony over Sega for very logical and sensible reasons. I chose to fuck off the X-Box because it's a Microsoft product, and I doubted it'd run for ten minutes straight. Turns out that prophecy came true for many gamers. I suppose it all comes down to breeding; Sega and Nintendo are Gaming Companies. Sony did a good job of founding itself. Microsoft is still that shitty company everyone hates. Why would I buy from them if I can find a realistic alternative? I use windows because 90% of the planet is built to handle Windows, but when it comes to Consoles I can pick what I want... and I'll pick what's built by a company you can rely on.
