Why do people keep saying "I don't like Anime because of the fanbase"? I don't understand it. I also don't get why some people say "I grew up", just because it's animated it doesn't mean it's for kids. I'm not trying to change your mind, I just don't think they're valid reasons.

Believe it or not, I actually get that over here in Japan. Heroes has a fair following (and it's fun for me, as I'm an entire season ahead of my coworkers)

I hate anime because it follows manga; my problem is that every character is instantly petrified when one talks or moves slightly. The panning shots, flash backs, pointless monologues and overdone character traits like: this girl is shy and innocent while this guy is heroic and eats physically impossible amounts of food are all laziness, an attempt to draw out the show, or an allowance for the show to catch up with the manga. All of which are unsatisfying and make the experience feel like anime isn't its own artform but the pet dog of manga.

My other problem with it is the lack of artistic originality. Western animation may look physically inferior to anime but each show looks different, they all have their own art style. But with anime there is no difference between this highschool magic girl and the next; particularly since these characters follow the previously mentioned personality archetypes so even if they talk there is still no difference. If you remove the clothes, hair and eyes from all anime characters, every show will look like it's buying mannequins from the same factory; if you remove the breasts you won't be able to tell the difference between the male and female mannequins. This along with sexual fetishes is why anime has the tendency of yelling: our purple haired, red eyed, girl in a sailor suit is different because she has a cat tail and cat ears! So according to anime animators sticking a clip on tail and a cat ear hair band on a character makes it new, despite that every animator is doing it!

Oh almost forgot your precious ghost in the shell is guilty of cheaping out on characters blinking where each character blinks once every 5 minutes. While some don't ever blink because they conveniantly have robot eyes giving an excuse to cheap out on blinking all together.

Think I'm going too far? Then compare the average anime character's blinking frequency to the proper once every 2-10 seconds, or to the characters in the Simpsons blinking.

Went through several pages of google images on the words "anime girl" but sorry they are all mannequins with different outfits, hair and eyes.

By the way what is your defence of the lack of backgrond animation or blinking? Since you so vehemently oppose my post.

Right some people need to learn to read, i for one never said i don't like anime BECAUSE of the fans but to be honest you anime nuts don't make it easy on yourself. This thread is a prime example of your getting upset about a bunch of cartoons. You throw it in everyone's faces if you get a chance and quite frankly i'm sick and tired of it. It's something that needs to be said. SecretTacoNinja yeah just because something is an animation doesn't mean it has to be for kids but the majority of these shows i hear anime fans go on about ARE for kids they ARE kids shows their demographic are 5-12 years olds!

yeah Onmi true it doesn't but if i started watching teletubbies all day went mental over the teletubbies had posters and dressed up as tinky winky at cosplay conventions i had everything teletubby related and started to argue that the teletubbies had some serious social metaphors and the direction was on par with some of the greatest writing and movies of our time and should be respected by all, you'd think i was a freak right? You'd think i was mad and take leave of my senses? Well welcome to how the rest of us feel. You like anime great fnatastic but seriously DON'T force it on the rest of us we're not interested!

To be fair, Simoun does have a really good reputation. (I personally didn't think it hung together very well, and never seemed to decide whether it wanted to focus the story on the war or on Aaeru and Neviril, so just settled for jumbo sized portions of angst.) Still, good for fucking with people's heads. For example, one of these two is actually a man. [http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/Uberbucket/vlcsnap-47893.png]
Yeah, I was halfway through the show before I realized that.

I love anime! I've seen Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann twice because it is my favorite series! I hate anime fanboys!

This is a double edge sword to me because i am leaving for a AnimeCon on Halloween night but the serious die-hard fanboys annoy the crap out of me. I've never come across a person who looked at anime and me watching it and said "Ha ha, anime sucks i hate you" most people just say "Oh anime, not my cup of tea but you seem to enjoy it". The fanboys who look at me watching animes in English and go "Oh emm gee, You are ****** for watching in english and not japanese". This is a war between Subs and Dubs, personally i like both because some humor (example. Golden boy)is just funnier in english and not that funny reading it.

As far as animes to hate, if you are going to hate a anime watcher hate the fanboys who diehard love DBZ/Bleach/Naruto. I personally don't like these anime because they are all the same. Always episodes of flashbacks and time wasting and endless story line.

Quick, they can still be saved, tell them it ended at season 1! For the love of god, save them from season 2!

And as pointed out with the Carroll quote, the fact that you believe that this is criticism in any way shows that it is you who has a childish desire to be percieved as "grown up".

no it shows my desire to be entertained by something with a little bit more sophistication then a cartoon written for 8 year olds, it's not a wanting to be percieved as "grown up", Hell i play more video games then you can throw a stick at, you can hardly call me grown up! But i don't go around defending a kids show like it's the second comming of the messiah. Zallest has got the right idea liking the stuff but not being an all out idiot shouting at people with a different point of view then you, did i insulted anime fans in general? Well suppose yes, yes i did and for people like zallest i am sorry dude, the rest of you could learn a lesson from him....rise above it! (Yeah dude DBZ/Bleach/Naruto they are the worst offenders imo)

Because I dislike the art-style; the cliches, everything about it. I've been forced to watch a fair bit of the bloody stuff by people I know. More than I dislike anime itself I dislike the way a significant number of so called "anime-fans" seem to defend their genre as a whole despite the fact that large parts of it a dross deserving of no more respect in an artistic sense than "Angry Beavers" or "The Jeremy Kyle Show". To be honest anime itself and the culture that surrounds it just annoys me.

And as has been pointed out on any number of occasions, there is a great deal of anime which is significantly more sophistiacted than cartoons written for 8 year olds.

But no, it's easier for you to dismiss an entire medium than actually expend thought. So, are you that sophisticated after all?

im just curious if some of you have any... explanation of why you hate anime.
Whoa, a discussion topic that NewClassic missed completely, how in the hell?

Here's the thing about anime, is that it's often lumped up into same-y categories, even though it's usually as diverse as any other genre of television. Saying "I hate anime" is like saying "I hate American television." Unless you hate all American actors, shows, styles, and types, then you don't hate American Television, you hate some American shows. Same applies for British television, or Iranian. Or anything.

Anime is very hit or miss with me. Physically speaking, anime runs at a lower framerate, and has a lot of tricks to maximize screen-time with minimal effort, including the aforementioned slow camera pans, still frames, landscape milking, and flash-backs. That being said, it's also subject to a lot of personal taste, like preference to art style or genre.

Personally, I love shows like GitS: Stand Alone Complex and Lucky Star, and subsequently dislike shows like Bleach and Naruto. I find most of their plot-lines, powers, and who-sits are repeated ad nauseum. Shows like Stand Alone Complex have pleasing story-lines and art styles, and I find things like Lucky Star/Azumanga Daioh/Excel Saga to be particularly entertaining (Not too unlike the humor found in South Park or Family Guy, just set to different cultures).

Overall, a lot of anime is bad, and there are some good ones, just like any style of television. I find most American comedy to be abysmal, and most British comedy to be long-winded but entertaining.

Depends on taste I guess... Although I don't hate anime. If anything I think it's a pretty cool guy[sup]*[/sup], most days.

[sup]*I know, bad reference.[/sup]

One reason might be that the animation is often weird, the infamous "flap" can sometimes make english dubs sound goofy, no on ewants to watch cartoons with sub-titles, and seeing funbags, upskirts, and other cultural quirks that the Japanese don't mind putting in their cartoons makes some people cringe when watching anime. However, there is the occasionaly well written, well animated, well voiced work that only cuts things down to people who don't like cartoons in general

Why are you taking this so personally? Like my dislike of one particular medium is so utterly personally offensive to you? Are you really that insecure? Do we all have to sit around and admit we love all anime in all it's forms for you to feel good about yourself? If so sorry buddy that just isn't going to happen! Yes there is some anime which proberly isn't aimed at 8 year old but the MAJORITY is and i for one (as stated early but it quite odvious you don't read other people's posts fully or understand them) have said i am sick of fans throwing anime in everyones faces and expecting us to as crazy about it as they are and getting (as you are right now) offended and upset when we don't. Sorry but the vast majority of it just doesn't interest me but it isn't made any better by people like you getting all offended and angry over something which really is completely pointless anyway, i mean well it's served as a nice distraction from my work and the mindless amound of test scripts i'm supposed to be writing it really hasn't achieved anything except made you angry over someone else opinion, an opinion you cannot change and it was a fruitless effort to try in the first place.

There are more problems with the dubbing process than matching to lip flap, lip flap can be reanimated quite easily (easier than most things, in fact, as one of the money saving tricks in anime is to structure scenes so that the only significant motion is the lip flap, which can lead to chin paralysis or the horrors of Cheek Teeth).

Because Japanese and English are massively different languages, matching up the length of dialogue to the length of the scene, and making sure that the dialogue is matched to dramatic effect (f'rexample, a sudden scene change to accentuate a dramatic revelation in dialogue) between the two languages is a grade A nightmare. That's why there's a tendency in dubbed anime to have even more unnatural language in scripts than TV (and people on TV, even when it's not written by Joss Whedon do not talk like real people), with really uncomfortable sentence constructions because the dialogue had to be padded to fit the scene, or constrained for the same reason.

no on ewants to watch cartoons with sub-titles,
You might not. I've worked out that about a full third of my DVD collection is in languages other than English, including but not limited to Japanese, Chinese, French, Korean, and Russian. Subtitles are of absolutely no concern to me.
