Honestly, I've never gotten into forums quite as much as I would've liked. Currently, I'm an English major and I figure a message board is a great outlet for me to talk about games and whatnot and still get to write for enjoyment. My question is this: why do you enjoy posting on the Escapist forums?
My reasoning might be silly, but the emphasis on grammar touched the grammar Nazi in me so that was probably one of the biggest pulls. That and from most of the posts I've seen on other forums, this strikes me as the most intelligent crowd.
"why do you enjoy posting on the Escapist forums?"
Im not sure I post out of joy on this board. I "like" this place for what it could be and not for what it is. I have posted here out of little more than whimsy.
I see a lot of intelligent people here but very few wise ones. I see a real passion for gaming and a willingness to create change.
Then I see an inability to disguish the lines of game and story. Skill and mechanic. Player and premise.
Worst of all I see an unwillingness to draw the lines that would disguish them.
And why would there be? In our current state of gaming we have the focus of developing story through gameplay. Bigger and better things on the horizon. Its a wonderful concept well ahead of its time. It doesnt work.
The greater the introduction of story into gameplay, the more confined the outcome of said gameplay is towards the conclusions of the story. Designers of course are no more foolish than the rest of us so they proceed with mulitple story branches for the gameplay to extend itself towards, complete with alternate endings. This only further confines the gameplay to story, difference being that now the story is diveded and giving the illusion of depth. Gameplay essentially becomes auxiliary to story structure no matter how divided. Both Portal and World of Warcraft suffer the same restraint.
I dont believe video gaming will grow untill story becomes a byproduct of play. I believe mechanic should be created to facilitate ability and imagination.
I think players should be distinguishable from each other and particularly from their circumstances.
I hate what video games have begat and everyone that refuses to see what they now are
