Just wondering why i keep reading about people hating mojang for beating valve and saying that they 'shouldnt' have beaten Nintendo and Valve. My question is why shouldnt they? The people who voted for Mojang probably believed that in the past year Mojang's acheivement was more impressive than what Valve did in the past year. Now, while Steam is awesome, I dont recall anything in the last year that Valve did that had as much of an impact as Minecraft did. Its not even finished yet and it still made a ton of cash. (my bet is that it never will be finished. but thats a whole different story)I mean hooray for Portal 2 coming out and hooray for half life 2 episode 2 and hopefully a third that will hopefully be released before i die, but is it really fair to count the entire breadth of a studio's career in a yearly contest?

Yeah, I agree but I can also tell you right now that you'll get a tonne of responses like "YEAH?! Well what did lazy bastard Notch do?! SPEND 6 MONTHS PUTTING DOGS INTO A GAME THAT'LL NEVER BE FINISHED?! HA!".

But maybe I'm just cynical...

Its because comparatively Mojang has done very little when you look at what Nintendo, Valve and Bioware have done.

Half Life, Baldurs Gate, Zelda/Mario/Metroid/Pikmin?

Compared to game that isn't even really done yet?
I've played Minecraft and I really enjoy building stuff up, I'm fairly new to it but I take pride in my Soviet Missile Base, Dam, Trench System and Warehouse.

... What?
Soviet Missile Bases are cool. Especially when you put a big golden star in the floor.

Its because Mojang hasn't even finished a single game. Minecraft is an unfinished buggy product, compared to the fact that valve revolutionized the FPS genre as a whole.

I thought that title belonged to Bungie since they introduced the trigger button on the controller as the firing of the gun button in Halo: CE or is that jsut for the console FPSes?

Half life was the first game to have an in depth story as it did. Half life 2 introduced advanced physics. Team Fortress 2 revolutionized team based shooters. Not to mention all the mods that were made on their engines.

Battlefield 1942 is crying because of you.
Crying tears.

Touchy subject on these forums.

I however would say that both Bungie and Valve revolutionized the FPS. It's not like genres are limited to just one revolutionization.

Did i say it was the only one to do it? No. I said it revolutionized it. I love the battlefield games and i love what they did to the genre. Their vehicle combat is second to none. But team fortress 2 did a lot to help small scale objective based team FPS's.

Its because Mojang vanquished their heroes and now they are left with a pitiful look on their face...

BooHOOAHAHAHAHA, THE GOD OF SANDBOXES HAS DEFEATED YOUR CHAMPIONS.

Thats actually really funny. And like mega64 said

I don't really count Mojang as a developer. It's what, 4 people? I mean great that he made something cool and all, but it just seems like Mojang works under perfect developer conditions. They have no deadlines, they just dick around and whenever they feel like it they'll release something.

Also technically, Minecraft is unimpressive, so they haven't done anything cool in that respect either. Mojang is just kinda..eh.

I don't hate mojang, I just don't think they should have been invited to the party...

A lot of people here are only going by what developers have done this year. In fact, that's mostly what the OP talks about. And Minecraft is unfinished and buggy because it's still in Beta. If it was already released as a full game then complaining about it would make sense, but it hasn't been. It's completely clear that it's a Beta. Betas are not finished products.

the game's not even officially released and the mods are already better than Mojang can possibly produce. I just feel like it's a great company behind a great game but it's squandering all the potential: Valve doesn't have a beta Half Life 3 with people producing better levels than they can.

Not really 4 people anymore.

Markus Persson, Game Developer
Jens Bergensten, Game Developer
Daniel Kaplan, Business Developer
Markus Toivonen, Art Director
Jakob Porser, Game Developer
Carl Manneh, Managing Director
Tobias Mollstam, Code Ninja
Daniel Frisk, Chief Architect

Plus they have an office now as well... if this is not a developer, then I don't know anything it seems.

First, define "developer".

Second, Notch made a game that can randomly render a world eight times the size of earth (if memory serves) before hitching up, and can do so on command. That is an accomplishment in and of itself.

Yup, Valve makes all their stuff all on their own.

Except Counter-Strike + Source, Team Fortress 2, Day of Defeat + Source, Portal and Alien Swarm (just to name a few), all of which were originally third-party mods that Valve bought and brought the crews along.

Okay then, what has mojang done this year? they added note blocks and wolves. thats it. And i payed for a game, i expect the game to work as advertised. Instead i get notch trying to get as much money out of his fans as possible. The whole reason he went to beta was to charge more, nothing else, no major updates or anything. Hell mojang has done barely anything to minecraft since adding the nether, mostly just adding mods to the game.
