My problem with Minecraft is that it overshadows far better Indie games.
I have unreasonably high standards.
I normally care (much) more for gameplay than i do for graphics, and i really like the concept of dwarf fortress, but i'm not too keen on memorizing a massive set of symbols before i can play a game. I'm sure that once you get used to it it's like reading the code of the matrix, but learning the code that well just looks like such a daunting task.

You may burn my at the stake for this, but i would sooner play minecraft than dwarf fortress because (dare i say it?) minecraft has better graphics (personally i never thought i'd hear (or see) myself say that).

Its because Mojang hasn't even finished a single game. Minecraft is an unfinished buggy product, compared to the fact that valve revolutionized the FPS genre as a whole.
I thought that title belonged to Bungie since they introduced the trigger button on the controller as the firing of the gun button in Halo: CE or is that jsut for the console FPSes?
Half life: 90s.
Halo: 2000s.

Halo ripped off many things from Half Life, and passed as "innovative" to the consoles.
And I will ask the same question to you I asked someone else who was also very vague WHAT were those INNOVATIONS?
Story telling.

Gameplay was always good on PC, but Halo took that PC gameplay and put it on consoles. Halo innovated nothing, merely ported it.
So I can say that everyone ripped off Pong and get it across as fact? Sweet now I will start saying that everyone has been ripping off Pong for years and that no one is a game maker and merely a thief.

Gameplay may always have been good on PC but UNTIL the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube Valve was only a PC game maker. They ported Half-Life to the PS2 but no other system. They are still PC game makers only and merely port there stuff to the consoles.

When you can tell me any game SPECIFFICALLY made by ValVe for the consoles before Halo I will bite that its a rip-off of Half-Life. Until then your argument has no buoyancy in the ocean of video game design.

I don't hate them, but they should not have been placed in MM. Until they have actually finished Minecraft or say its done and we will be adding updates, they have no games released.

That is my argument (minus the whole valve revolutionizing the FPS genre. Cause personally I don't play em so). I think a developer should finish a game before being able to compete. But then my opinion is my own personal opinion. And I try not to put too much hate on here. All my hate gets put up on my facebook/twitter.

Even when Valve ported it to consoles, it was still before Halo. Hell, the original Half Life game for PC was out years before that.
So what were the innovations that Halo ported from the PC? Good game play? I am sorry but that is not something that can be merely ported because as a lot of PC Gamers can say now a game with good game play on the consoles does not have good game play on the PC. If it is controls Halo is the first console game to not have shoot be one of the face buttons. Which is what the people who say Halo innovated. Also they say that Bungie innovated CONSOLE SHOOTERS nothing else.

Also ONE DAY does not really constitute as BEFORE. Yeah it is before but 1 day does not make a difference. If it was say at least 6 months where Bungie might be able to use the technology that Valve used in the port.

I can't stand the way this March Madness thing generates pointless flak. What is the point of taking two developers and arbitrarily declaring one better! Minecraft was a great acheivement of indie development and Valve is a paragon of professional development companies. Both are good and this pointless contest is nothing but flamebait.

Yes, because it's not like that's easily changed or anything.

The massive keylist and all the intricacies of just getting the fortress running is far more daunting.

Oh, so true. Minecraft is good and all, but it pales next to the glory of Dwarf Fortress!

But it is just slightly more accessible. Not everybody has the patience to learn to play DF.

Well i have recently bought minecraft, but i think it's really silly they get to attend march mayhem. It's not really a main contender as a game. I think it should be required to have modern grafics and a overarching story to the game for it to be a real contender, atleast be released as a game.

I mean game devs that make games like minecraft with no story is allowed to contend. Then what limit is there for other low specc, low development cost games are allowed to contend. Like let's say bejewled, farmville? etc. etc. Tic-Tac-Toe, Castle-Siege, Garry's mod creator Garry? LOL, Armor-Games(long time flash game creator)

In my eyes this MM is not about real games, like this they should just open the whole door to casual games, flash games and all indies then imo.

And yes lol idd minecraft isn't even released and their only game made. Other devs have Many games and IP's under their belt and are for anyone without fanboi Jaded glasses on a way superior team.

Like the game tho, just a bit empty.

I'm pretty sure Syphon Filter, on the PS1, had the "fire" button assigned to a shoulder button, and the N64 had a trigger for shooting in Goldeneye and Perfect Dark well before Halo and Microsoft came along.

The reason I feel that way is because Mojang has a library of ONE game. ONE. Sure, it's a solid-gold wonder, but how do we know every game's gonna be like that? For all we know, Notch could be a one-hit wonder.
Nintendo on the other hand, has a fairly solid reputation for quality first-party titles.
And Valve? Well...Valve has never put out a bad game. EVER. EVERYTHING THEY TOUCH SO FAR HAS TURNED TO GOLD.
Quite.

What I loved about the whole thing was the following train of "thought" - and I use that term VERY loosely.

Mojang have made half a game, but that half a game is fantastic, so it must mean that Mojang are teh greatest evar.

Bioware have made four games in the past few years, three of which were better than Minecraft could aspire to be in five lifetimes, but DA2 wasn't a good, so they must suck arse.

In hundreds of pages, people repeated the above pseudo-arguments ad bloody nauseam, and didn't even realise that they were mutually exclusive.
Says you.

I personally never cared much for Bioware's games.

To me, Minecraft is better than anything Bioware ever made. Because their games don't appeal to me.

Infiniminer would like a word with anybody who says Minecraft is an original concept.
In that case nothing ever created is original.

Pretty sure Half-Life borrowed some key gameplay elements from Doom and Quake.

Surely portraits was painted before the Mona Lisa?

Rock is derived from blues, metal came from hard rock.

Very, very few things are truly original, if any at all.

EDIT:
Sorry for the double post

You're reaching. Infiniminer is nearly identical to Minecraft, nobody is going to mistake Rock and Roll for blues, or Half Life for Doom.
