Having played fallout 3 and new vegas, and enjoyed them and i was curious to know why there is such a dislike for them from (some) old school fallout fans, is just because its now a first person perspective, or just how they treat the brand. was curious to know why

Because this new generation of gamers now say Rage is just Fallout with cars and Borderlands Fallout with lots of guns, blah blah (note: Fallout not Fallout 3; new generation gamers think fallout is a shooter). Every time I see that kind of comments, I feel annoyed, because they don't know what Fallout and Fallout 2 are, and how much better they are than Fallout 3.
You'll find that most people hate Fallout 3 the most and are okay with New Vegas. Fallout 3 was a good post-apocalyptic action-adventure, but ultimately failed to capture Fallout's spirit, so when people hate on it, they hate on the fact that it had to be a sequel of a beloved franchise and not just an original IP.

I think the only people who dislike New Vegas are newcomers to the series, who only played Fallout 3 and take it as an example of a Fallout game. Obsidian made New Vegas and Obsidian's team mostly consists of people who worked on the first two Fallout games.
I personally like all four games, but I don't consider Fallout 3 canon. I enjoyed it though.

Something about the canon of the franchise being ruined. I've played the first game the changes aren't drastic really. A change of location, super mutants are no longer capable of thought, the story isn't quite as good and a wild Liam Neeson appears. Aside from that Fallout 3 is on balance one of the best games I've ever played. If you can't look past the first person perspective or the slight narrative alterations you're cheating yourself out of an amazing game.

Because Fallout 3 was different. Both in perspective and tone. Fallout 3 wasn't as silly as Fallout 1 and 2, Less references, it was all very serious. They also changed the setting drastically, moving to the east coast, and changing a good bit of what we knew from the old games. Super mutants were different, the brotherhood of steel was different.

No see, New Vegas is the one people like. People hate Fallout 3 because of it's really shitty plot.

The same reason people hate every Sonic game released after the second one: because it's not what they're used to, so it's automatically the worst thing ever.
It's kind of because Bethesda told us that we wouldn't just be getting Oblivion with guns, but they gave us that anyway. Now, I like it, but that's because I liked Oblivion and have never played a Fallout before Fallout 3 up until August when I bought Fallout 2 for the PC. Now that I've plated new and old I can say that I like them both in their own way.
i can't be alone in thinking that the 'canon' of a niche game more than 10 years old isn't 100% important when rebooting the franchise as something entirely new and different? i've played all four main games, all of them excellent.
i actually liked fallout 3, and i played fallout 1 and 2 before. i didn't play new vegas, but that's because i played fallout 2 and didn't like the faction business, which is exactly how new vegas is structured. fallout 1 and 3 felt very similar, which i really liked too. most of the issues with canon that i saw was justified due to being on the opposite coast. i also the location of both games (i grew up on the west coast, so recognized that in fallout 1, then was in DC when i played fallout 3).

Pretty much these. I had to drag myself through the game due to the ridiculously awful writing. Bad sidequests didn't help either. I mean sure, huge worlds can be fun, but only as long as they're interesting to explore and actually have interesting stuff to do. All I remember doing in Fallout 3 was move from one place to another, doing bland and uninteresting stuff one after another.darth.pixie said:

Of course this is all opinion and I don't care if people like Fallout 3, but I can't help but pity the people who believe some people hate fallout 3 because they're jealous, just can't accept the truth that F3 is better, are simply trying to troll or be fanboys or whatever retarded shit they can come up with.
