Why the hate of Halo 3

From what I've heard, it is mainly from the people who hate it because someone else hates it. Sometimes they've never played a Halo game and they say it sucks and they hate it. The campaign did NOT bring anything new to the fold, and I love Halo, except Halo 2, the campaign can go die, but to me a lot of people don't realize that Halo/Halo 2 brought multiplayer to a whole new level. Granted it was LAN for Halo CE but the joy of playing matches against friends was something not entirely but new to the console. Halo 2 refined the multiplayer and to me that game allowed COD games, and what have you, to branch out because it gave people that standard and a goal.

I like Halo and always have, but to say it's milking the franchise is bull.

It's true though, people just hate what others love, and most times, they won't give it a second opinion. I don't care if you play MGS, COD, or TF2, they are ALL good games. Even if they aren't for the platform I love most.

EDIT: Halo 3 added forge, theater and community maps integration! If those aren't new to a console shooter without modding, well I'll be surprised. Some of the community is dumb, I agree with that statement. Spend time on the forums and you actually will find real people who aren't jackasses. Though some are still idiots.

Halo was bad, it was just average for me, no better or worse than your standard run-of-the-mill shooter. Sure, it might have been revolutionary when it was first released but it stayed exactly the same while other shooters surpassed it in quality and yet Halo still has the same rabid fanbase despite the many better shooters on the market.

That's the reason that most people hate Halo.

Oh, and maybe it's also to do with it's community consists 90% of 12 year old boys with a language problem.

EDIT: Yes, I have played the game and own it, as it can be fun on occasion when messing about with friends.

it gets a pretty bad reputation for it's obnoxious fanbase.
Funny because especially on Escapist the Halo haters are WAAAAAAAY more obnoxious then Halo supporters. They are all three good games, period. Not everyone likes everything though so obviously not everyone likes Halo. It definitely has become to cool thing on the internetz to hate Halo. You even get more internetz points if you say you love Half-Life 2. (even if you really only played it like once 5 years ago, but nobody knows that!) In my personal opinion you compare the first Halo to Half-Life 2 and it did everything better then HL did. But god forbid someone on the Escapist considers HL2 to not be the Jesus Christ of games.
Wow...just wow.

Opinion be damned, that is just having a shit sense of taste.

Halo did 1 thing, and one thing only, and that is good controls for a console FPS.
But guess what, Goldeneye did that. Soldier of Fortune(Dreamcast version) did that too.

What did Halo do? Nothing.
It's multiplayer is pretty much UT without the alternate fire on weapons.
The campaign was full of copypasted levels. The story was non-existent.

If you're going to make such a radical claim, you'd better back it up.
I don't have to back anything up. I LIKED how Halo 1 did everything, story, multiplayer, weapons, more then HL:2 did. Millions upon millions agree with me too. Double or triple the amount of people who agree with you in fact. IT IS MY OPINION. I don't give a rats ass who agrees with me and I'm not trying to persuade anyone else to agree with me. You see thats what makes opinions great. They cannot be proven or disproven. You can either agree or disagree with an opinion.
Preference is just preference (e.g. I like Pepsi over Coke). However, Opinion is based on fact, and he's asking you how you thought it did everything better, by essentially saying "It's just is, I don't have to provide any kind of evidence", is just being obnoxious.

Alright, after seeing this thread, I had to make an account to reply to things like this.

I don't particularly hate Halo itself. I am and always have been a fan of the genre. It is a fun and a pretty game.
My hatred comes more from the fanbase. Halo is NOT a great game. It's fun, it's pretty, and Microsoft was the first company to get online multiplayer en masse right. Aside from that, it's fairly unoriginal, because almost everything that's been done in that game was done better at some point in time (See the original Perfect Dark... And something's wrong when you get 1-up'd by a game from 1-2 generations back)
Despite this, much of the more ignorant fanbase (You ALL know the ones I mean, because you hate them too) severely overhypes the game. It's an alright game, something worth playing because it's fun. But it's made out to be the best game in the universe WAY too often. Hell, it won a "game of the year" award the year AFTER it was released. What? On top of that, there's the usual pain-in-the-ass kids and trolls (Admittedly, my brother is one of those people, but he sticks to GTA4).
I also feel I should mention that I've decided to name this massive overhyping of a decent game a "Halo Syndrome", and have used that phrase far too much in recent years. Mostly for COD4.

So yeah, short version: Severe overhyping and an incredibly irritating fanbase.

You know, I found it hilarious just browsing through this, page after page of hatred towards something for whatever reason. I've gotten a good laugh, learned very little and generally procrastinated from my real objective of being on the computer (that 750 word letter isn't going to write itself). Normally I wouldn't weigh in on such a subject as Halo 3, not because I don't like it, or I hate the fact that everyone gives it such flak, but because I really couldn't give two shits. Halo is a fun way to relieve some stress, kick your friends' ass, and generally just shoot armored aliens and humans while they shoot you. It's nothing new, it's not inventive, it doesn't try to be. It's exactly what you expect. A mindless shooter, and in that aspect it succeeds stunningly.

To be honest, I don't hate Halo 3, or any of the Halos, but that doesn't mean I like them. They were fun, for about 3 or 4 hours, then they got tiresome. It's three games of the same thing, with minor tweaks. Invisibility added, more vehicles, different weapons, that's about it really. That's why it's hated so much. It's grossly overpopular and it hasn't done anything different other then trade one scenery for another and changed very little of itself. It's not like the transition Half-life had with the whole physics aspect to gaming. I could pick things up and throw them for hours before I would even consider moving the storyline. And don't even get me started when Garry's Mod came out. I've lost so many nights to that it's not even funny. That's exactly why everybody hates on Halo 3. It's a decent game that's been 10 years in the running, with only guns being changed. I can't say much for other Halo knockoffs because they haven't even made a ripple on my radar of interests, because of bungie's lack of effort in at least trying to revolutionize halo in even the slightest.

So for the fanboys who proudly stand next to every sequel to this series, do not poke the bee hive. You like the game, find something within it that connects to you and generally enjoy shooting aliens. Don't go around spouting off Halo is the best thing since sex, because you are wrong on so many levels. Large sales numbers and a wide fanbase, make not an amazing game. I'm pretty sure the entire Madden NFL series has always had a huge fanbase, but you don't see it in any runnings for the best game ever.

And to the haters, let them have their game. If they really want to spend hours upon hours shooting each other in the face, who's gonna stop them? Most arguments about halo is the fanbase. Hell I'm glad so many racist 10 year olds play halo, that way I don't have to put up with it when I play other online games. Also, if you're actually concerned developers are gonna stop trying to make an effort to revolutionize their genre, you can cut that out already. that bandwagon has sailed, we are far past developers not caring and have gone into video game purgatory, a whole lot of nothing, just waiting for some new bright and shiny idea to revolutionize the business altogether.

Could we just end this whole flame war now? Aren't we tired of pointing out the same tired flaws in the same tired arguments? Can Halo fans stop with the endless questioning of why people don't like their games and can haters stop answering to what they know is a trolling effort to get people talking about halo? Is this really how we try to get developers to make better games? ***** and moan about a 2 year old game? Jeez, talk about heads being shoved so far up an ass, both groups need to pull out, grow up, and move on.

I don't hate Halo 3, or any of the other Halo titles, because hate would imply I cared enough about them to get angry. Everything I've seen from that series has provoked a resounding "Meh". No, what bothers me is the ridiculous success this relatively mediocre series achieved - success that has less to do with the merits of the product and more to do with the circumstances of its introduction and medium of presentation - and the impact this has on development of future titles. The idea that Halo is somehow the pinnacle of the FPS genre is troubling, since success and acclaim lead to imitation, and the fact that the term "Halo-clone" has any semblance of meaning illustrates that we already have more than enough would be Halos.

The original Halo is successful because it was THE big fish in a small pond when it was released. If Halo had been a PC FPS originally, nobody would be having this argument, as it doesn't compare favorably on that platform at all - there were/are simply far too many excellent FPS titles on the PC for the well executed mediocrity of the Halo series to make much of an impact amongst the jaded PC FPS fans. Reviewers and gamers would have panned it as yet another over-hyped game that spent way too much time in development only to end up underwhelming. Fortunately for Bungee, Microsoft's purchase of their company and the subsequent shift to an X-Box exclusive release changed their 'so-so' PC/Mac shooter into a 'fantastic' console FPS (which says a lot about the state of the competition at the time).

So yeah, I don't hate Halo 3 or any of the other Halo titles because they aren't bad games - for a game to provoke actual hatred it has to do a lot more than just "not be particularly interesting or exceptional", for that your game pretty much has to be aggressively offensive to the point where the act of playing it is just one continuous insult to the player, and those titles are thankfully quite rare.

The Halo fanbase on the other hand is indeed a collection of aggressively offensive jackasses that engender reactions of intense loathing and antipathy, so I definitely hate them!

firstly, use the search bar.

I loved all the halo games, especially 2 although I now prefer 3 because I'm used to it. I thought it was a very smooth fast pase game that was alot of FUN! It also had a really good story line and some pretty cool new ideas in it eg. the bubble sheild. I think the main reason people hate it is because of the new obsession which is call of duty.

I don't like call of duty, nor do I understand the people who do. It's basically the same idea released over and over again, how many ww2 games do we need? especially with the same title! Also its slow, its dull and it feels like your walking through sludge. I really don't understand that game.

Argh. This is why I think people should have a post-count of at least 400 before being allowed to start threads..
Why stop there, let's make Gonzo the new posting allowance.
Nah. Some of the not-so-prolific posters are great people.
Although it would be neat..Gonzo journalism, making your own story and all that..
