Why was God of War so great?

I'll tell you why, because the graphics, the smoothness of the game, even though blood and body parts and giant monsters are flying everywhere, the QTS was amazing, especially against Hydra at the start.

Plus, Kratos is one bad ass game character.

I think that God of War is a pretty good action game series. No one can deny that there is quality there (tight controls, fun combat and great production values) plus a very cool badass main character. Not liking it is a matter of taste, nothing really wrong with the games themselves.

God of War had for the time nice graphics, a good combat system, a not that bad story and really good boss fights. Also blood and the weapons.

If you don't like it that's ok. I also don't like some popular games and I don't know why people like it.

And you should blame Resident Evil 4 for the QTE's not God of War. God of War just did them right.
Ahem...Shenmume?

Dit it made QTE's popular? I know that Shenmue did them first but Resident Evil 4 made them popular (again if you want it that way).

I'm not going to bias, but I never understood what was so great about GoW. I hated it from start to end and thought that it was a piece of Greek shit. I like myth and fantasy and I felt that Gow just wanted to put emphasis on gore and nudity. I hated the oh so respective combat and the ever ready "Fuck you button" that had a bright red "Use in case of emergency" label above every enemies head. I mean really. The story, oh God. A mellow drama about a stupid Greek general who accidentally killed his family then gos on a killing filled ***** quest to kill the God who made him do it. Maybe he should have paid more attention to who he was slaughtering! I also blame this game for starting the trend of quick time events. I would love to know what other people think because I seem to be the only one who thinks this and I think that this game was far too popular. However that is only just me. I'm sorry if I have offended anyone.
So, just to give us perspective, what games do you like?
Even I find it somehow enjoyable.
It is an undeniably good series, however, and if you don't like it, don't assume that it is because the game is over rated. More likely, you and it just don't quite fit together. I mean, all your points of argument are based on a relative scale, so you have no actual foundation in your argument.
To say that it is an overrated game just because of your personal experience is to say that anything that doesn't appeal to you is bad and overrated.

I mean, have you ever stopped and considered that happiness isn't effortless? You have to make a choice to enjoy things, but it sounds like you decided to be a cynic through the whole game.
I was more disappointed. I loved the first five minutes and after that I was forcing myself to keep playing. I love hack and slash games but GoW just gave me a high followed by a let down.
Thus I think that people that fawn over the game are simply easily amused.

Good point. But most of my friends blame Shenmue for the QTE

Here's the million dollar question:
Why on Earth did you keep playing the game if you didn't like it, then come and complain about it?
I don't fawn over the game, but what's wrong with being easily amused? I mean, I for once have to agree with Yahzee in that its better to be easily amused and have fun than be miserable because I enjoy very few things.

I remember seeing a review in danish tv of GoW and thinking: "Hmm, that seemed like a crappy game, what with the lame combat and violence." Then I spend the next year or so not even thinking about the game and not caring to. It was out of my mind.
Then I visited a mate and we got to discussing games. He said I should borrow the game as it was awesome. I felt that it would be a waste of time, but what the hell, I had nothing else to do at the time.
The next day I popped the disc in... and realised 6 hours later that I should probably go to bed so I could sleep a little before going to school. It turned out to be one of the most awesome games I ever played.
The graphics were very impressive. The controls were tight and satisfying. Sweet weapons and ways of killing stuff. Great boss fights. And I really liked the story. It had a lot of the stuff that makes a Greek tragedy. (I don't care that they fucked up the mythology). Kratos is sad person, who in the best greek tradition tries to fight his fate (see GoW2 for this also) and while doing that kicks an insane amount of ass.

In short, my misgivings about this "crappy action title" were put to shame and I had to suck it up and admit that I was wrong. Very wrong.

i can't reall judge the game since i was brainwashed into getting it and beleiving it was pure awesomeness and since many people agreed i thought i this game kicked ASS

but then i realised that the concept was shitty

BUT the execution of the ideas and concept was so well done that it made a old genre into a new type of gaming !!!

so the bottom line is that i had fun playing it

The boss battles in GOW2 are the most fun you'll have in an action game, tons of variation, never felt unfair and oh so rewarding when you win.

and kratos is just awesome

Quote of the day, especially if taken out of context (is it rightfully should be).

After recently replaying the game with my girlfriend (who has seen Gears of War by the way) she says that the violent finishes are the most impressive she's seen in a game, and the QuickTime event scenes are fantastically done, so I'm going to go with that. While it could get a little repetitive at times, all the special events and the boss fights usually did a good job of breaking it up, and it's one of the few games that can keep up the tension and drive to keep going so well. I'm glad I've played it through again myself. It's fun!

It seamlessly combined puzzle play with hack and slash, this gave you a real sense of achievement when you managed to complete the level.

What I liked about it is that the boss fights weren't all just monsters with more health and the QTE turned the game into a flowing story, rather then "the epic hero hit x 38 times until what ever was standing in front of him died".

I thought God of War actually had a really good story. Having read a lot of Greek mythology before playing the game, I thought it could've fit in easily with those old stories. Not so much the part about killing a god, but the ridiculous nature of the tasks and the curse that was put on Kratos and Athena being his guide.
I really liked the combat and I'm one of those people who doesn't mind quick time events. The few puzzles were well done. But the combat was so well done. That's why I like God of War.

It's like asking "why is Gears of War so great?" GORE and it's just all-in-all fun to play for some people. You don't like it? Nobody should condemn you for it, its not for everyone.
Gears of War made hiding fun actually. Gore had nothing to do with it really for me. God of War is a solid game that entertained me immensely but I don't think it was groundbreaking or anything. Just many hours of semi-challenging button mashing.

The series is still the high point of its genre in all respects. Mock the story if you must but its a damn site better than anything Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden could come up with. The combat is engaging and complex yet manageable, the games show that they have a sense of humour, they retain enough varied playstyles that you can manage to attack most enemies any way you want.....
Ninja Gaiden: Feudal Ninja killing demons in the modern world? Oh yeah, Robots and Titties and magic. What's not to love. Oh besides alot of really poor design decisions. Who thought rockets coming from off screen during intense melee combat would make the game more fun?

Devil May Cry: Son of the Devil fighting puppets with scissors is equally as good as Spartan baddass slaughters Greek mythology and kills a god. But the combat in DMC is stiff compared to GoW and the hydra is one of the single greatest video game fights ever.

I think we are forgetting that the Dynamite Cop games did them before Shenmue. Not that they even came close to popularity ;)

As for Shenmue vs Resi in popularising QTE, I'd say Resi popularised it with the public, but it was Shenmue that probably popularised it with developers and showed a new way to interact with cutscenes, which was then morphed into including it in action sequences like we have today. That's just my thoughts though.

As for the topic at hand, I can't really comment as I have never played a GoW game unfortunately (I will one day), but it strikes me as looking like a cross between DMC and Greek mythology which strikes up my interest and leads me to presume that the challenge of the game and desire to master the battle system would play a large part in its popularity.
