God of War had for the time nice graphics, a good combat system, a not that bad story and really good boss fights. Also blood and the weapons.
Don't forget tits.

The first one was alright, so-so mechanics executed well without excelling, it was solid but having played it all the way through have no idea why some regard it as one of the greatest games ever. Or even 'great' for that matter. It was the gaming equivalent of beige - functional and entirely adequate but not something I would want all around me all the time.
In a one word review, I'd say "unremarkable".

On a side note, there are a lot of these "Why is [popular game X] so good?" threads springing up of late aren't there?

It isn't my cup of tea but it's a quick fun thrill that requires no thought.

For what it is trying to achieve in it being a no brained adrenaline rush of a brawler it did it quite well. But I thought the original Devil May Cry did it better without crappy quicktime events.

As much as I hate to say it and feel old about it, not only were there the people who didn't buy it and caused it to fail, there are also enough people who are new enough to gaming that they would have no idea what Shenmue is,
Shemnue sold well, just that its cost so much to make, apparently that every Dreamcast owner would have had to buy 2 copies for it to break even. I feel old thinking that there are people that new to games that they wouldn't know about Shemnue too...

God of War is fairly mindless fun for me. Good enough diversion for a few hours. Good but I don't know why it always seems to come so near the top of 'best ps2 games' lists.

It's an enjoyable romp. It reminds me alot of the other GoW (Gears), if ya like the genre chances are you'll love the game, but if you don't, there's a good chance you'll find it repetitive and dry.

The story was engaging, the fighting was interesting and well done, the characters were diverse and interesting and the whole thing was very nice to look at.

It was the last game with quick time events that didn't over use them to the point of making me scream.

Oh and the voice acting was pretty good too. Kratos was six shades of awesome.

A classic style Greek tragedy mixed with visceral combat, amazing visuals, epic boss fights and great voice acting. What's not to love?

So you're saying a tale that deals with the despair of loss, the burning torture of a sorrow one is never allowed to forget, that becomes a burning rage against all the world, which culminates finally in a quest for revenge that can lead only to the destruction of all of creation is only on par with what looks like a damn Mad-lib, and effectively a carbon copy of 20 anime series?
You can put as many words into it as you want, GoW's story is still, "This guy is half-insane, half-pissed, and wants to kill everything in his way." Nothing you mentioned seemed to deviate from that core value. So I would appreciate it if you didn't try to act like GoW's "depth" is somehow superior. Let's not forget that the devs got their ideas for free from the "Big Ol' Book of Greek Mythos," and all they took from that book was the stuff that would kill you dead. I think I see a pattern.

What I liked about it is that the boss fights weren't all just monsters with more health and the QTE turned the game into a flowing story, rather then "the epic hero hit x 38 times until what ever was standing in front of him died".
Bingo ward, you hit the nail on the head as far as the QTE was concerned. (Many of the individual mobs had a number of finishing moves depending on which button you pressed too.)

And "meh" to to people going on about the borrowed storyline. The myths were invented in the first place, derived from earlier stories. What, you think Homer didn't embellish? put in his own spin? Besides, have a read of a few of the Ancient Greek playwrights and tell me THEY didn't mix and match as well.

Maybe there's nothing particularly original about the game... except that it's so well put together as a whole, so well crafted. You have to be blind to miss that. I mean, "don't get why it's so popular", c'on really? That just comes across as bloody-mindedness. There's games that I don't go for but I understand why others do. I just think it's just shit-stirring to act so dumb.

I mean, I felt cold towards all the Halo games. Thought the idea was derivative (ie Ringworld). Even thought that others were a bit sucked in by the hype- but it was competent.

God of War was a great ride- play it on a harder mode.

The reason I love GoW.
Personally, it's sheer epic-ness. Every boss battle, every character, every puzzle, the story. Everything.
Especially the opening to GoW 2. Amaaaazing stuff.

Personally, I liked Devil May Cry more than God Of War. Maybe it was the lack of Quick Time Events, or maybe it was just that I couldn't sympathize with God of War's style. Most likely it was because I played Devil May Cry first and resented God Of War totally ripping on it.
