Because he was a horribly written character, and like you pointed out just annoying. His presence actually pissed me off, I found each time he came into the screen I would roll my eyes as line after line forced their way out of the cinema audio into my fragile ears. It was a rape of all the senses; luckily smellovision has yet to be created.

However I must admit part of the hate you see for Jar Jar stems from just a dislike of the new films. He now represents alot of what was wrong in the new trilogy, or at least that is what alot of people likely associate with the new films. Midi-chlorians for example, I much preferred the hippy magic answer than that shit.
See, now I had this exact same problem with Hayden Christiansen XD
True, I thought about that as I wrote but then I realised I'd just come off as a crazy rabid hater on redbull. Luckily now you've mentioned it I have no problem saying that he also was terrible and equally accountable for the badness of the new movies.

I didn't like Jar Jar on the basis that I couldn't shake the feeling he was a Jamaican stereotype. Besides considering he was the first completely CGI animated character in cinema (to my knowledge) it is a little dissapointing that he was a prattling moron.

Hey, you know what makes any battle scene MUCH more tense and enjoyable?

An absolute prat fucking around in the middle of it, accidentally sabotaging his own side and paying absolutely no penalty for it. None. Hundreds of Gungans get shot to death by robots, Jar-Jar fucks around and gets away with it.

Sure did lend that scene a lot of needed gravitas. Did not at all feel like I was watching a shitty saturday morning cartoon. Honest.
Seriously. When I watched it when I was younger, it wasn't bad to my uneducated eyes, but I watched it recently...and boy was it unbearable. Like you said, lets stage some epic battle and focus on some bumbling fool who shouldn't even be alive at that point in the movie. God, worst part in that movie, I swear.

There was a net boot leg called the "Phantom Edit"
Jar Jar was removed from all non plot critical scenes, as well his voice was subtitled into a alien form and it was a deep sounding tone almost like Jabbas.... Lucas freaked and tried to shut it down very hard.

And it improved the movie by a hundred fold.
Yeah, I've seen it. They also altered all the Trade Federation subtitles so that instead of some nebulous and never-explained blockade or treaty or any of that bullshit, the Trade Federation is involved in slave trading. Just flat-out slave trading.

And just like that, they actually seemed to have a reason for doing what they were doing.

Plus they cut the Pod Racing scene down by a full half hour.

yeah, it was a much better movie.

(sorry if this is a doublepost)

When I was a little kid, many years ago, I thought He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was the greatest story ever told, and that Howard the Duck was a pretty good movie.

The moral of this story is children are stupid.

Don't worry, he was one of the biggest reasons that I hated movies 2 and 3. His acting is awful...just plain awful. Should've just made Samuel L. Jackson play a dual-role in that movie. Anakin and the other Jedi councilor dude.

He had no use to the plot and many people hated how annoying he was.

I don't hate him (Since its pretty petty to hate a CG animation) but he wasn't the best of Lucas' decsions

Eh...the thing is though with those old shows...is that you understand why you loved them. Jar-Jar Binks...was just never loved...nor should he be.

You know who would have made a good Anakin? That kid who played Spiderman, whatsisfuck, Tobey MacGuire? Tobey something. That guy, he'd have fit the part.

The truth is, though, nothing Hayden could have done could ever have saved that character. It simply was not his fault that the script was so very, impossibly bad.

I mean shit, look at Natalie Portman, she's a genuinely good actress and in all her scenes she's either a robot or an incredibly stupid robot (but man what a snazzy dresser, am i right? am i right? yeaaaahhhhh she sure did change her fucking clothes a lot, didn't she.)

Those actors will have to live with being viewed as having destroyed those parts, but seriously, what could they have possibly done with such a terrible script and such stunningly inept direction?

What could Sammy Jackson have done, even? Mace Windu was boring as all-git-out, he serves no purpose other than to be Sammy Jackson in a fucking Star Wars movie, sticking out like a goddamned sore thumb and being just as robomechanical as everybody else in the movie.

What would have saved Anakin Skywalker was now a new actor, only a new script.

One that was, you know, maybe written at all.

He did a great job with the character he had

The problem was the character he had was AWFUL

It was an offensive, and ridiculously annoying stereotype, Jar Jar was a comic relief character of the worst and laziest variety.

Eh, I never noticed, really, but then again, I do tend to like stuff that other people don't, so maybe I'm not one to judge...

Also, reading through the excellent webcomic Darths and Droids kinda helps.

Hayden showed way too much angsty crap, but I'm afraid that maybe Toby wouldn't show ENOUGH.

Perhaps something in between (but leaning more toward Toby)

The overarching problem with new Star Wars is that they, for some reason, decided that they needed to be kids movies. Jar-Jar is basically around for comedic affect--Three Stooges style physical humor that feels out of place when compared to the originals. He adds very little to the plot himself.
Wrong. The main problem was that Lucas was trying to appeal to kids, while giving them a way too contrived plot for a child to understand. Jar Jar clashes with the Political tone of the films, and the lighthearted elements don't blend at all with the dark storytelling.
Really? Because I grew up at the age of 6-7 maybe 8-ish and I understood the general plot and loved the first trilogy, so when it came to doing the first three films, I just didn't like them because they /failed/ to draw you in. And relied to much on special effects.

Please don't lump all of us who were kids back then into one category, because its quite frankly insulting. :p

I'd make a counter challenge to name one negative thing about him... but there wouldn't be room in this forum for that list.

No... not really actually...

GI Joe has a colorful cast and while Cobra Commander was... incredibly stupid, he had a lot of great lines and Transformers wins on basis of giant robots, but every other show from myu childhood drops firmly into the "oh jesus did i really enjoy this" camp.

I can't sit through an episode of Thundercats without wanting to get a time machine so i could go beat myself up at six for being so very enamored of such horrifying rivers of raw sewage.

Jar-Jar Binks represents a primary problem with Episode I: whereas the original trilogy were rousing adventures for people of all ages, Episode I was a cynical cash-in aimed at the age group that would buy the most toys. Additionally, Jar-Jar is an irritating character; his voice grates on you, and his only role appears to be to provide hideously unfunny physical comedy.

Episode I was a bad movie, but the main reason people hate it so much is because it's so disappointing. The originals were rollicking, escapist adventures with dashing heroes that we liked and could identify with, and ominous villains that threatened us by speaking to our basic insecurities. Episode I was a children's movie about bureaucrats and emotionless soldiers fighting against villains that had no discernible motivations or goals; there are characters in the original trilogy whose lines can be counted on one hand that were more interesting and colorful than the billed cast of The Phantom Menace. The movie attempted to distract us from its emptiness by constantly throwing buckets of computer-generated special effects at us, but all it did was numb us the the capabilities of these effects, eventually making them mundane. If the effects had been used sparingly, like in the original trilogy, we would have been fascinated when the movie got to its setpieces.

Personally, I don't think that Jar-Jar and Episode I are the worst that the prequels have to offer ? I think that General Grievous was a worse character, and I think that Attack of the Clones was a worse movie. Either way, though, they're all terrible.

You've read the script?

There are maybe four lines written for Anakin that are not insufferable angst-laden wank.

I mean, all the obnoxious, horrible shit he does - screaming IT'S NOT FAIR at the drop of a hat, blaming Obi-Wan for EVERYTHING, murdering women and children - all of that is right there in the script, written by George 'Is The Man' Lucas.

Any actor would have been exactly as insufferable in that role, the problem was the script.

I really didn't care. I was 8 when I saw Episode One, but I could see now why people hate him.
