My Commander Shepard from the Mass Effect games is the best female videogame character ever!! Damn sexy and tough as nails. She won't take any shit but still finds time to get it on with her fellow female crew members. Nice.

Hells yeah! Just wish there was more story in the Glyder games to flesh her character out more.

Heather Mason, well developed, doesn't fit the scantily clad horror movie type, and her last in game line is awesome... If a bit sexist.

Heather definitely gets my vote. I was reading down this list and was really shocked not seeing her until your post. Definitely the best, isn't a sex symbol or overly macho combat goddess like most playable female leads are presented as.

Samus Aran of Metroid, Aya Brea of Parasite Eve, and Jade of Beyond Good and Evil are on my list too.

oddly I like that she's barely characterized, just cool design, and some hinted quirkiness in the item descriptions. She's easier to empathise with maybe. Also she doesn't fit either the Helpless feminine/Masculinized Macho women stereotypes.

Terra from FinalFantasy 6... obviously

I'm sorry, this is probably just me, but uncanny valley much?

Rinoa from Final Fantasy 8, because she had a personality behind her, and i sware, im the only person on earth who used her in my main party the whole time. (When i could i mean.)

Shyeah! I loved all the characters in FF 8, and I actually found myself liking them all, even seifer and his little gang.

OT: Quistis Trepe, Selphie Tilmitt or Rinoa Heartilly I suppose, although cortana, samus and saria are up there too

Yeah in that picture her eyes are a little weird, here's a more representative pic:

Also I agree with Gunblade that Rinoa has personality. In most Final Fantasy games the charaters feel like real people due to the way they behave and have natural converstions, I think the greatest examples of female characters are in the Final Fantasy, Persona and Chrono Trigger/Cross games

GLaDOS and The TF2 Announcer are among my favorites and they're both voiced by the same woman - Ellen McLain.

Sarah Kerrigan is my favorite game villain.

Am I the only one who found her laugh in the Portal commentary to be a little creepier than what she did for GLaDOS and the Announcer?

I kinda agree, she had a strange laugh.
